It started in Oakland, as something being "proper" (A nice car, really
good weed, a good song, etc.) and proliferated through local rap which
gave it wider mainstream (as in "hip-hop mainstream") acceptance, was
reapropriated by mostly east coast rappers as "props" and giving "mad
props", etc., further proliferating into true mainstream (beyond
hip-hop) usage as seen in this post.
