#1: Questions abound in ACC, SEC

Posted on 2006-07-23 07:57:24 by Orange

At the risk of interrupting all the political and religious debates on
this here chatboxthingy, I thought perhaps a look at a few
football-related questions was in order. Below is a column with
questions about the upcoming ACC and SEC seasons. Feel free to provide
your own answers.
--Jeff

College football insider column
By Tony Barnhart
Cox News Service

The ACC and SEC kick off their preseason meetings this week. Here's
one guy's guess at what the most frequently asked questions will be.
Answers are for free.

Atlantic Coast Conference

Question: Is Clemson going to break fans' hearts - again?
Answer: If that means Clemson coming up short in the ACC title race,
the answer looks like "yes." Still, with 17 starters returning -
including all five offensive !linemen - this could be the Tigers'
best chance to win the conference title since Florida State joined the
ACC in 1992.

Q: Can Bobby Bowden stand losing five games again?
A. No way. But he won't have to. Bowden says only two things will
force him out of coaching - poor health and losing. His health is
good, and there's too much talent in Tallahassee to lose a bunch.

Q: Who'll start at quarterback for Virginia Tech?
A: Frank Beamer hopes to make a decision by the end of the first week
of practice. Sophomore Sean Glennon looks like the leading candidate to
replace Marcus Vick behind center.

Q: Will the Georgia Tech offense be different with Patrick Nix calling
the plays?
A: You might see a few more passes called on first down, but the main
offensive objective doesn't change - get the ball to Calvin
Johnson. When the defense gets obsessed with stopping Johnson, bust
them up the gut with Tashard Choice.

Q: Is Willie Williams really going to transfer from Miami?
A: Williams, rated the nation's top high school linebacker two years
ago, couldn't believe he was still No. 2 on the depth chart, so he
quit going to offseason workouts. He wants to leave but has not found
it easy. West Virginia and Tennessee already have said thanks, but no
thanks.

Q: Is Miami really going to be that bad on offense?
A. You figure it out. No starters returning on the offensive line. The
top running back (Tyrone Moss) coming off a knee injury. Six new
coaches, most of them on that side of the ball. Good thing the 'Canes
may have the best defense in the country.

Q: After consecutive 5-6 seasons, can Ralph Friedgen turn it around at
Maryland?
A. The Fridge has not been a happy camper lately and has shaken up his
coaching staff. He'll also go back to calling the plays in hope of
better results. Quarterback Sam Hollenbach (15 interceptions last
season) must play better.

Q: Is Ted Roof in trouble at Duke?
A. Having to kick starting quarterback Zack Asack off the team for
plagiarism sure won't help, especially when you're 3-19 the past
two seasons. But Roof, we predict, will still be back next season.

Q: After four straight .500 or worse seasons, does North Carolina
finally break through and win more than six?
A. The answer looks like yes, if one of the quarterbacks - Joe Dailey
or Cam Sexton - can show just a little consistency. It will also help
if running back Ronnie McGill stays healthy.

Q: Is Wake Forest really a dark horse to go bowling?
A. The Demon Deacons return more starters (19) than any team in the
ACC. The schedule gives Micah Andrews & Co. a realistic chance to start
4-1.

Southeastern Conference

Q: Where in the world is Brent Schaeffer?
A: The Ole Miss faithful got some bad news this week when they learned
the Tennessee transfer is in California's College of the Sequoias
still trying to become eligible. Even if he does, he may miss the
beginning of fall practice in Oxford. Ole Miss really has no Plan B at
quarterback.

Q: Will the Auburn academic probe affect this season?
A: Probably not. But it needs to get resolved in a timely fashion or it
will become an issue on the recruiting trail.

Q: Is Phillip Fulmer really on the hot seat?
A: Nope. But it would help his quality of life if the Vols beat
nationally ranked California in the opener. UT won't go 5-6 again,
but if it does, the answer to this question a year from now will be
yes.

Q: Who starts at quarterback for LSU?
A: You'd hope Les Miles won't be vague about this, but we're
afraid he will. JaMarcus Russell, last year's starter, is coming off
surgery to his throwing wrist and a separated left shoulder. Matt Flynn
is coming off a career game in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. Redshirt
freshman Ryan Perrilloux, the nation's top high school quarterback
recruit in 2005, is coming off a year on the bench. Miles needs to make
a decision.

Q: Who'll get the start at quarterback for Georgia?
A. Mark Richt says he's got it narrowed to four. We, and the Bulldog
Nation, believe that number is actually two. Georgia can win a bunch of
games with Joe Tereshinski III at quarterback, but the Bulldogs will
likely need something from freshman Matthew Stafford if they want to
repeat as SEC champs.

Q: Will Tyrone Prothro be back for Alabama?
A. No one's ruled out a return by the talented wide receiver, who
suffered a horrific leg injury against Florida last season. If Alabama
hopes to match last year's offensive effort, it will need Prothro in
the lineup.

Q: Is Arkansas going to quit running the ball and throw it every down?
A: Not a chance. Under new coordinator Gus Malzahn, the Hogs will
spread the defense and make it cover the entire field. But with running
backs like Darren McFadden and Felix Jones, Arkansas isn't about to
become Texas Tech.

Q: After beating Tennessee and Florida and almost knocking off Georgia
last year, can South Carolina contend for the SEC East title?
A: Steve Spurrier just wants to win more than he loses, and for this
team, 7-5 sounds just about right. The Gamecocks appear to be a year
away - maybe two - from contender status.

Q: How much will Urban Meyer use freshman quarterback Tim Tebow at
Florida?
A: There's a lot to like about Tebow, but this is Chris Leak's
team. The senior is poised to have a big year in his second season
running Meyer's intricate offense. Tebow will have his moments as he
gets ready for 2007.

Q: Vanderbilt went 5-6 with Jay Cutler at quarterback. So what happens
without him?
A. The Commodores would be thrilled with another 5-6 season, but when
the first two games are with Michigan and Alabama, five wins seem
unlikely.

Tim Tebow's team couldn't even beat Hoover (AL) High School last year
and he didn't look all that good in the loss. Maybe he'll do better in
college.

Yeah, "OrangeDood" <gocincinnati@yahoo.com>, well... that's just
like... your opinion man.

>Atlantic Coast Conference
>
>Question: Is Clemson going to break fans' hearts - again?

Signs point to.... yes. Primarily because their coach is Tommy Bowden.

>Q: Can Bobby Bowden stand losing five games again?

Maybe if he thinks the losing is because of HIM, he'd retire. But that
thought would never cross Booby's mind. He's about as untouchable as
they come. And he's not retiring anytime soon.

>Q: Who'll start at quarterback for Virginia Tech?

I don't know the answer to this question but, unless I am very
mistaken, I believe VT takes a step back this year. Not a large step
back, but a "rebuilding" post-Vick step back nonetheless. I think VT
wins 9 games this year.

>Q: Will the Georgia Tech offense be different with Patrick Nix calling
>the plays?

Yes. With Patrick Nix calling the plays, they will definitely throw
the ball more than they run the ball. I would say this even if they
didn't have Calvin Johnson.

>Q: Is Willie Williams really going to transfer from Miami?

Yes. And he'll find a home either at a lower-level I-A school or he'll
transfer to I-AA.

>Q: Is Miami really going to be that bad on offense?

Recruiting in the state of Florida, all Miami usually has to do is
"reload" and not "rebuild". I think this year is the first time in
many a moon where "rebuilding" applies to Miami. Will they be "bad"?
If being no better than they were last year is "bad" then, yes, they
will be "bad" on offense.

>Q: After consecutive 5-6 seasons, can Ralph Friedgen turn it around at
>Maryland?

I don't consider Friedgen in the good-to-great head coach category.
But he *is* a great offensive coordinator. If he's retaken the reins
of the offense there, they'll score some points. If they can stop
anybody on defense, they'll have a late-December bowl to go to.

>Q: Is Ted Roof in trouble at Duke?

As long as Duke fans expect anyone outside of Steve Spurrier to win at
Duke, *everyone* is in trouble at Duke.

>Q: After four straight .500 or worse seasons, does North Carolina
>finally break through and win more than six?

North Carolina will be the surprise team of the ACC. If the dominoes
fall right for them, they will be competing with VT and GT for the ACC
Coastal title.

>Q: Is Wake Forest really a dark horse to go bowling?

No.

>Southeastern Conference
>
>Q: Where in the world is Brent Schaeffer?

The question is, where will he be on opening day of the Ole Miss
season? And the answer is, under center for the Ole Miss Rebels, one
way or another. As far as I've heard, they have no QBs on that team
right now that have even taken a snap in PRACTICE, much less a game.

>Q: Will the Auburn academic probe affect this season?

Heh... no. It's already justifiably fading away. Nobody gives a flying
fuck that the Howell-Raines-hired bammer journalism grads that work at
the New York Times have decided to fight bammer's battles off the
field since they can no longer win it *on* the field.

>Q: Is Phillip Fulmer really on the hot seat?

Absolutely... the seat of his pants would be SCORCHING if he turns in
another season this year like he did last year.

He won't.

>Q: Who starts at quarterback for LSU?

Jemarcus Russell. And I must say it always pleases me to no end when a
rival team chooses to start the less-capable quarterback.

>Q: Who'll get the start at quarterback for Georgia?

Tereshinski... but he is walking on the razors edge because, with
Stafford behind him, he has NO room for error.

>Q: Will Tyrone Prothro be back for Alabama?

I hope so, but I don't think he plays this season. And, though I hope
he's able to come back and play at full ability, I have my doubts
whether he'll ever be able to play football again. I wish him luck.

>Q: Is Arkansas going to quit running the ball and throw it every down?

Arkansas is the SEC West's great mystery. They could well have the
best RB in the SEC in McFadden (Irons is the only one that may be
better), but the new OC is a total mystery. I'm not sure if I'm
totally accurate, but I don't think the track record of high school
coaches stepping into head coaching or coordinating roles in Division
I-A is very good. Will the Mustain Train be the real deal? Will his
OC/former-high-school coach be able to match up with the best
defensive minds in the SEC? Like I said... a mystery. But signs point
to... no.

>Q: After beating Tennessee and Florida and almost knocking off Georgia
>last year, can South Carolina contend for the SEC East title?

Yes... Spurrier will have them contending and in the race. They will
beat one or two of the big SEC East triumvirate. But they won't win it
this year.

>Q: How much will Urban Meyer use freshman quarterback Tim Tebow at
>Florida?

Leak is in much the position of Tereshinski at Georgia, but more
deserving of a few breaks. But the Gator gang in the stands of Ben
Hill Griffin give him those breaks? NO. Leak better come out firing
and come out firing good and fast... and not look over his shoulder.
Because as soon as he screws up, Tebow's in the game.

>Q: Vanderbilt went 5-6 with Jay Cutler at quarterback. So what happens
>without him?

Vandy will resume their normal position this year... bent over the arm
of the SEC couch, sans lube.

>
>

Clempson wins the conference.

> Q: Can Bobby Bowden stand losing five games again?
> A. No way. But he won't have to. Bowden says only two things will
> force him out of coaching - poor health and losing. His health is
> good, and there's too much talent in Tallahassee to lose a bunch.

After continued pitiful offensive performance, Bowden "fires" Bowden.

The offensive objective last year wasn't too much get the ball to
Calvin Johnson. Methinks Pat Nix will change that mightily.

> Q: Is Willie Williams really going to transfer from Miami?
> A: Williams, rated the nation's top high school linebacker two years
> ago, couldn't believe he was still No. 2 on the depth chart, so he
> quit going to offseason workouts. He wants to leave but has not found
> it easy. West Virginia and Tennessee already have said thanks, but no
> thanks.

That imbecile burned a lot of bridges during recruiting. Now that
coaches know he isn't exactly phenomenal, they don't want to put up
with his crap.

They haven't been too impressive on offense in some time. Simply
because of their horses and defense, they'll have a winning season.

> Q: After consecutive 5-6 seasons, can Ralph Friedgen turn it around at
> Maryland?
> A. The Fridge has not been a happy camper lately and has shaken up his
> coaching staff. He'll also go back to calling the plays in hope of
> better results. Quarterback Sam Hollenbach (15 interceptions last
> season) must play better.

He has a been a mystery. Miracle worker to average coach in a couple
years.

> Q: Is Ted Roof in trouble at Duke?
> A. Having to kick starting quarterback Zack Asack off the team for
> plagiarism sure won't help, especially when you're 3-19 the past
> two seasons. But Roof, we predict, will still be back next season.

As if more than 300 people on the planet care.

I think Bunting isn't a brilliant coach, but he's smart enough to learn
the job. He's improving things slowly. As long as Wake, NCSU, and
Duke suck, he'll be okay.

> Q: Is Wake Forest really a dark horse to go bowling?
> A. The Demon Deacons return more starters (19) than any team in the
> ACC. The schedule gives Micah Andrews & Co. a realistic chance to start
> 4-1.

They'll do fair.

What about NCSU?

> Southeastern Conference
>
> Q: Where in the world is Brent Schaeffer?
> A: The Ole Miss faithful got some bad news this week when they learned
> the Tennessee transfer is in California's College of the Sequoias
> still trying to become eligible. Even if he does, he may miss the
> beginning of fall practice in Oxford. Ole Miss really has no Plan B at
> quarterback.

too funny.

> Q: Will the Auburn academic probe affect this season?
> A: Probably not. But it needs to get resolved in a timely fashion or it
> will become an issue on the recruiting trail.

Yeah....it's really killed their recruiting so far.

> Q: Is Phillip Fulmer really on the hot seat?
> A: Nope. But it would help his quality of life if the Vols beat
> nationally ranked California in the opener. UT won't go 5-6 again,
> but if it does, the answer to this question a year from now will be
> yes.

Cutcliffe.

Miles needs to make
> a decision.

Perrilloux is the greatest QB ever.

> Q: Will Tyrone Prothro be back for Alabama?
> A. No one's ruled out a return by the talented wide receiver, who
> suffered a horrific leg injury against Florida last season. If Alabama
> hopes to match last year's offensive effort, it will need Prothro in
> the lineup.

The guy is still on crutches. He won't be back this year. When he
comes back, he won't be the same receiver.

7-5 is good. Anything above that is impressive. Anything below is
excusable.

TIM TEBOW IS THE GREATEST QUARTERBACK NOT NAMED RYAN PERRILLOUX ON THE
PLANET!!

> Q: Vanderbilt went 5-6 with Jay Cutler at quarterback. So what happens
> without him?
> A. The Commodores would be thrilled with another 5-6 season, but when
> the first two games are with Michigan and Alabama, five wins seem
> unlikely.

That Alabama game is a traditional rivalry. It could go either way.

CROOM?

My understanding is that Leak is not really the QB for Meyer's offense
but Tebow is. I suspect Leak will start and Tebow will get some
playing time. The QB that fits will end the season.

I thought Tebow was a bit slow in the Hoover game and I was really
prepared to be impressed with him. But who am I to second-guess

>>
>>
>>
>> Answer: If that means Clemson coming up short in the ACC title race,
>> the answer looks like "yes." Still, with 17 starters returning -
>> including all five offensive !linemen - this could be the Tigers'
>> best chance to win the conference title since Florida State joined
>> the ACC in 1992.
>
>
>
>
>> Q: Will the Georgia Tech offense be different with Patrick Nix
>> calling the plays?
>> A: You might see a few more passes called on first down, but the main
>> offensive objective doesn't change - get the ball to Calvin
>> Johnson. When the defense gets obsessed with stopping Johnson, bust
>> them up the gut with Tashard Choice.
>
>
>
>
>> Q: Is Miami really going to be that bad on offense?
>> A. You figure it out. No starters returning on the offensive line.
>> The top running back (Tyrone Moss) coming off a knee injury. Six new
>> coaches, most of them on that side of the ball. Good thing the 'Canes
>> may have the best defense in the country.
>
> They haven't been too impressive on offense in some time. Simply
> because of their horses and defense, they'll have a winning season.
>
>> Q: After consecutive 5-6 seasons, can Ralph Friedgen turn it around
>> at Maryland?
>> A. The Fridge has not been a happy camper lately and has shaken up
>> his coaching staff. He'll also go back to calling the plays in hope
>> of better results. Quarterback Sam Hollenbach (15 interceptions last
>> season) must play better.
>
> He has a been a mystery. Miracle worker to average coach in a couple
> years.

No mystery there. His WVU transfer QB led them to every good season
they had under the Fridge, not to mention four big wins over WVU
courtesy of the playbook he kept.

Consider: the year before said transfer, Maryland was 5-6 and we beat
'em 30-17. The years during his regime, Maryland went a combined 31-8
and beat WVU by scores of 32-20, 48-17, 34-17 and 41-7 (in the Gator
Bowl). The years after said transfer left, Maryland fell to 5-6 and 5-6
and WVU beat them 19-16 and 31-19.

Coinkydink? I think not.

>
>
>
>
>

Their schedule is god awful easy...two losses, at BC and Miami. GT, and
Clemson are home games, I don't see them losing either of those.

> > That imbecile burned a lot of bridges during recruiting. Now that
> > coaches know he isn't exactly phenomenal, they don't want to put up
> > with his crap.
> >
> >
> >
> >
>
>
>

Didn't WVU get a new coach during that time?

>> >> Here's one guy's guess at what the most frequently asked questions
>> >> will be. Answers are for free.
>> >>
>> >> Atlantic Coast Conference
>> >>
>> >> Question: Is Clemson going to break fans' hearts - again?
>> >> Answer: If that means Clemson coming up short in the ACC title
>> >> race, the answer looks like "yes." Still, with 17 starters
>> >> returning - including all five offensive !linemen - this could be
>> >> the Tigers' best chance to win the conference title since Florida
>> >> State joined the ACC in 1992.
>> >
>> >
>> >
>> > After continued pitiful offensive performance, Bowden "fires"
>> > Bowden.
>> >
>> >> Q: Will the Georgia Tech offense be different with Patrick Nix
>> >> calling the plays?
>> >> A: You might see a few more passes called on first down, but the
>> >> main offensive objective doesn't change - get the ball to Calvin
>> >> Johnson. When the defense gets obsessed with stopping Johnson,
>> >> bust them up the gut with Tashard Choice.
>> >
>> > The offensive objective last year wasn't too much get the ball to
>> > Calvin Johnson. Methinks Pat Nix will change that mightily.
>> >
>> >> Q: Is Willie Williams really going to transfer from Miami?
>> >> A: Williams, rated the nation's top high school linebacker two
>> >> years ago, couldn't believe he was still No. 2 on the depth chart,
>> >> so he quit going to offseason workouts. He wants to leave but has
>> >> not found it easy. West Virginia and Tennessee already have said
>> >> thanks, but no thanks.

Yes, in 2001, and the 'eers went 3-8. In '02 and '03, the 'eers were
9-3 and 8-3 without those Maryland losses. Hard to blame that on the
coaching.
