#1: Deer My New Neighbor

Posted on 2006-07-21 14:46:56 by jenslin

Yeah you...the one down the street.

We don't have to pay to park on the streets in our little town. This
time of year the city doesn't even care on which side of the street you
park.

Why do you therefore insist on parking on your front lawn???

It makes for that much less lawn to mow?

In Gatorville, you can get fined for that.

Which is exactly why many cities have enacted ordinances against doing so.

Drop a dime.

Or perhaps do the neighborly thing and have a friendly discussion with him
where you inform him of said ordinance.

I don't know if it's enforced here or not, but it definitely is not enforced
on game days. I think some people pay their rent by offering parking on
game days.

Property values donut stop at the property line. Bad neighbors can be
ruinous when trying to sell a house. Also, there is something called
civility. When you move into a neighborhood, you don't try to take the
neighborhood to your level, whether that be up or down (not that a lot of
people will complain if you have a meticulous yard, just don't bitch when
they don't follow your example). The thing to do would be to introduce
yourself, get friendly, have 'em over for a weenie roast, watch the game,
quaff some brews, and then come back in the middle of the night and slash
the tires.

Have all you people only lived in the suburbs or something? When I
lived in Seattle, this was not an option in some places. The people
living across the street from me had a 2 car driveway shared between
two houses. No garage for either house. And if you have 2 cars for 1
household, well, now you're parking somewhere else. I didn't live
downtown either, just in the city limits.

So you don't believe in zoning laws? The way
it works is that in the more desolate areas of this
here wild, wild west, you can still pretty much throw
up any ol' shack you want and color it purple and pink,
but the more you get into denser population where
everyone has to get along with everyone else, and
there are concerns about property values and such,
there are zoning laws that say you cannot just do
whatever you please on your in-town property.

> A rather stupid city ordinance... reminds me of my friend who lived in a

Dude, I don't know what you've got against property values, but
we're GLAD that you're stayin the hell away from our homeowners'

Oh please, you're only making yourself sound
stupid by saying this. Sure, there are many
homeowners associations that go way overboard,
but we're not talking about that, just ordinary
reasonable town zoning laws. If you owned
a $500,000 house in a pretty neighborhood, and
I moved next door and painted my house purple and
pink and put a car on blocks on the front lawn,
and a workbench and some old refridgerators,
either you'd be the first to squawk, or you're
a liar. Either that, or a diehard liberatarian to
the point where you'd cut off your nose to spite your
face.

No. But if all of the answers to those types of questions actually match

>>>> You have electricity? You have cable? You have a lawn instead of a
>>>> field? You have a barn or not? Do your neighbors make their money
>>>> off their land, or from jobs? Do you shop at a Wal-Mart?
>>>>
>>>> Etc.
>>> So basically you're either Amish or you're a suburbanfuck?
>> No. But if all of the answers to those types of questions actually
>> match those of people in cul-de-sac-land, you're a suburbanite.
>>
>> Ruralites don't commute to work; they don't "work from home" unless
>> the work is in the field; etc.
>>
>
> Your definitions are too limited. I live in an area defined by horse farms
> and cornfields, and have a well and septic field, yet commute to work. My
> surroundings couldn't be much more "rural" but we certainly live a
> "suburban" lifestyle.

You clearly get this more than does Peach. Maybe that new brain is
working a bit better than the old one.

For the rest:

If you don't make your living from your land, you're not really a
ruralite. If I buy a ranch and move to it, and continue working from
home for my company, have I become a rancher? Hell, no.

> You just couldn't call my area "the suburbs" by any reach.

Duh. I keep making the disinction between "suburban", "suburbanite", and
"the suburbs".

I'm pretty sure by definition a "suburbanite" lives in "the suburbs."

I consider myself in the "exurbs", as there actually is a Food Lion,
McDonald's, Dunkin' Donuts and a 7-11 within three miles of the house.

No. A "suburbanite" is somebody who lives in an area whose development
and use patterns best match the "suburban" pattern. But I'll slide on
that one; as long as we stop this bullshit that people who live on a big
plot of land out on the fringe but still commute to work every day (or
work from home, but not on their land) are "rural".

Hah. I'll agree on the "rural" thingie, but you're still FOS that one can
build in a "suburban pattern" out in the middle of no-freaking-where and
call it a "suburb" and the people in them "suburbanites."

There's gotta be an "urb" around somewhere for it to be a "sub" of. That's
what makes it a "suburb", not its street pattern.

It's not that I don't get it. It's that your definitions are clearly
Dahmusian.
