#1: What formation will Chelsea use this season?

Posted on 2006-07-22 02:14:54 by Tassie

Now that Mourinho's bough Shevchenko and Ballack, what are people's
thoughts on the formation of he'll use this season?

Personally, I'm not a fan of Drogba so would play Shevie up front
alone, which he can handle. then you've got Robben and Cole on the
right and left respectively.

I see a clash in the middle with Ballack and Lampard but I guess
Ballack will play slightly in front of Lampard and look for a header
that's been crossed in from either winger and Lampard will hang back a
touch looking for the crumbs on the edge of the box or just inside the
box.

This leaves Makelele as a holding midfielder in front of the 4 backmen
whoever they may be. Most likely, from left to right Cole, Gallas,
Terry, Ferreira. Then Cech in goal.

If things aren't going so well then or Shevcheko isn't scoring then
Crespo/Drogba can come on. Although, if Jose wants more forwards then
it's Robben to the bench for a Crespo/Shevie up front. I can't see room
for SWP (IMHO the silliest move of the last 5 years) , Essien, Geremi
and limited time again for Robben et al which is a shame to me but who
am I to complain.

Any other thoughts on the way Chelsea will run out?

Even though he scores gols, Sheva is a supporting striker, so he will need a
striker like Crespo upfront.

That would be a perfect combination, like it was at Milan when they played
together and scored many gols.

Considering that Mourinho is not very flexible with his tactics, and plays
defensively by packing the midfield, maybe he will play with Sheva only
upfront. This would be anti-football, modern catenaccio.

It's ridiculous to play these 2 players at the same time because they have
the same characteristics.

Look what happened to England with Lampard and Gerard.
One of these types of players is enough for a team.
The other midfielder needs to be sacrificed for a striker.

2 center midfielders is enough.
Makele and Lampard, or Makele and Ballack.

With a team like this, Mourinho should be shot if he plays like he did last
year, by packing the midfield and playing with one lone striker.

Mourinho's tactics last year were great for a small team.
Hopefully he will wake up, stop playing modern catenaccio, and play 2
strikers upfront.

Chelsea needs more creativity in the center of midfield for ball
distrubution.

IMO, Lampard and Ballack are great holding midfielders.
The only REAL creative midfielder, Cole, is playing on the left.

I can't see Robben not being first choice if healthy.

Shevchenko
Robben Ballack Lampard
Makelele Essien
