It started in Oakland, as something being &quot;proper&quot; (A nice car, really
good weed, a good song, etc.) and proliferated through local rap which
gave it wider mainstream (as in &quot;hip-hop mainstream&quot;) acceptance, was
reapropriated by mostly east coast rappers as &quot;props&quot; and giving &quot;mad
props&quot;, etc., further proliferating into true mainstream (beyond
hip-hop) usage as seen in this post.
