#1: Driving

Posted on 2006-06-12 22:24:25 by pinkgolfer

Hi

I have been playing golf for 9 months now and can hit arounf 210 yards
with my driver, How long does it normally take to get a longer
distance. And what distance can any other lady golfers out there hit. I
would like something to aim for, don't think I will manage Michelle
Wees distance.

Thanks Jules

A few / lot of blokes would be happy to drive it 210 yards - especially if
it's down the middle every time...

If you can drive over 200 yards then rest content. It is the next shot that
is far more important. I would concentrate on practising with my fairway
woods, my long irons and my short game.

Stay calm and don't be too impatient. Many other golfers don't even think
of hitting a driver after that short time of practice. I am lucky to get
some results from it after one year through the green
and I have to admit that you'd outdrive me quite frequently.

Plus, as Steward said, it's the following shots that matter.

Imagine:
What do you need in order to improve your handicap?
It's going from the greens with two or three Stableford points.
I'm sure that 210 yards off the tee will help you a lot with this!

I'm not a friend of statistics in sports but imagine this one:
Given a bogey player (HCP 18) and a course with 10x Par 4, 4x Par 5 plus
4x Par 3.

On a statistic round, reaching all the greens including the Par 3s
in GIR + 1, she/he will make these 90 strokes:

- 15 drives with the driver
- 3 drives with woods or irons
- 18 long fairway shots with woods or irons
(10 on Par 4, 4x2 on Par 5)
- 18 approaches with irons from 120 yards or less
- 36 putts

(I'd be lucky to come home with 36 putts, though!)

Thus, she/he will use his clubs in the following order of frequency:
- 36x putter
- 32x irons
- 15x driver
- 7x woods

Would you agree that with a bigger HCP the irons and the putter are used
more often?

If you don't use fairway woods there will be more weight on the irons,
but the driver is used only half as frequently as putter and irons,
respectively. The numbers make clear that putting is as important as
hitting the irons while the driver has to step back. Gaining another
10 yards from the tee might not help you that much.

I don't know your handicap, therefore the following is more of a private
note to myself (HCP 24):

My next focus should be the fairway shots, the approaches and putting,
resulting in
- straight fairway shots (150 yards might be sufficient as a start),
- increased precision in hitting the green from 30 to 120 yards
and placing the ball near the cup from 1 to 30 yards,
- gaining confidence in putting, avoiding three-puts whenever possible.

My philosophy as a sub-bogey player includes that I do not play against Par
but against bogey. My advice to all beginners is "Forget the word Par!"

Ciao,

Paul
