#1: Mesi's return garners mixed emotions

JOHN D'ONOFRIO: Mesi's triumphant return garners mixed emotions

Commentary

How the media chooses to portray an athlete's comeback from injury certainly
plays an important role in shaping "public sentiment" and the Baby Joe Mesi
saga is the perfect example of hypocrisy.

I don't understand how the return of one athlete from the jaws of death -
like New England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi - is portrayed as "heroic"
and another comeback - like Mesi's return to the boxing ring tonight - is
criticized.

You can't have it both ways - or can you?

When Bruschi returned to the National Football League last year after
suffering an offseason stroke, I saw nothing but tear-jerking Rocky-like
documentaries smothered in inspirational music and flowery commentary from
former players and teammates. One NFL game (I think it may have been a
Sunday Night Football contest) was so pro-Bruschi tainted that I had to turn
it off just to stop from gagging.

I still don't get it. The guy can't even spell his own name right.

Now, suddenly, here comes Baby Joe out of a suspension from professional
boxing that's never been quite proven right or wrong by anybody on either
side of the multi-million dollar coin, and he's some kind of fool for
risking his life?

Are you kidding me?

I've got a better idea if you really want to kill yourself. Suffer a stroke
like Bruschi, then play pro football again a few months later and try
tackling Jerome Bettis head on.

Does that mean that Bruschi should have hung it up after suffering a stroke?

Of course not, and in fact, I support his comeback as enthusiastically as I
support Mesi's.

The point is both men have the God-given right to decide for themselves what
they want to do with their lives. This is still America, after all.

If they want to risk their lives competing in a particular sport - ahem,
like NASCAR drivers every weekend - then that's their prerogative.

Seriously injured guys should never compete again?

Try telling that to guys like Jack Youngblood, who played in a Super Bowl
with a broken leg, or Nextel Cup drivers who strap themselves into the front
seat of a land rocket every Saturday or Sunday.

They're not heroes. They're just extraordinary human beings .

And Mesi's comeback spells nothing but better days ahead locally.

Throughout his amateur and professional career, he's served as a positive
role model for youths, as a positive spokesman for countless local
charitable causes and overall, as a positive sports ambassador of the people
of Western New York.

Baby Joe is back - and not a minute too soon.

Interesting point and I tend to agree with it. Things are a bit two sided
far too often and this is one of them when you look at it like that.

I agree that every adult has the right to choose what they do
with their lives. I don't agree that if Mesi really had bleeding of
the brain that he should return to the ring. Just my opinion.

He can be a better role model to the kids alive rather than
dead or in a vegatative state.

Yes Mel, the common sense approach is usually the best route to take ;-)

Yeah, you're right. It's a crazy concept and nobody really should take it
seriously ;-)

Yeah, I still haven't fulfilled my obligation from last year. I'll keep an
eye out and likely get tickets as well. I believe it's on May 12th so still
some time to make plans...

I've completely missed it. Guess I'll get on the phone tomorrow and put
something in action. Sheesh, in old age I'm getting slower than I was in my
youth...
