Most cues are wrapped with a Black Irish Linen Wrap or a variation
of such. I have a plain black wrap on my cue, which looks good, but
lots of times I see cues that I think a brown tone of wrap would look
better and complement the wood better than black.
It could be irish linen, or brown tone of leather, or lizard.
Have you noticed the same thing about some cues, not all, just some?

yeah. i notice that many play it safe by ordering black with white dots
which IMHO is the most boring and sometimes does not bring out the
wood. for me i prefer the classic white with green for 4 pointers. and
brown leather for ebony/cocobolo forearm cues.

Snapshot wants to know about wrap colors:
See if you can find a custom cuemaker in your area and go talk to him. Good
quality irish linen wrap is available in a myriad of attractive color
combinations in both single-dot and double-dot. For a dark cocobolo
forearm, I would recommend a brown w/ double-dot black wrap. For ebony, a
black w/ double-dot brown wrap.
See if the cuemaker can get his hands on a catalog -- he probably has one if
he orders a lot of irish linen to wrap his cues. A re-wrap by most
cuemakers costs in the $60-75 neighborhood and is worthwhile if you have a
cue valued over, say, $300.
But, if you have a cue where the finish-coat covers the wrap, as well as the
rest of the cue, then you're looking at $150+ for a re-wrap and re-coat.
And, depending upon the type of coating, some will refuse to even do the
job.

My personal belief is that irish linen wraps ruin many a fantastic pool
cue. I'd rather shoot with a crooked broom handle than a cue wrapped
with Irish Linen, but that's just me. I can't stand the way the wrap
feels under my fingers. I use black leather myself.

Aha... one of them thar 'biker' pool players. Satan's Second Choice.
But I know what you mean. I prefer the no-wrap cues myself... and the
stacked leather ones give a pretty good grip.

I don't know about "biker" LOL.
I'm a desk-jockey through and through and I shoot with a McDermott cue.
The one I bought had been re-wrapped by the previous owner with a
leather wrap. I've used it ever since. But I've never been able to
get used to, or like the Irish linen feel.
I'm not a collector by any stretch and there are probably 50 (there
would be more if more people posted, hehe) people that use this board
that own more "custom" cues that I do. I just go with what I like and
what works for me. :) I might never buy another cue. :)

I KNEW I should've said something about the rhyme, but one thing at a
time.
I've owned that cue for 3 or four years and unless I break the haft,
I'll die with the cue that I have.
(whew, that last one was much harder, I'll Ieave the poetry to the
writers, who've spent to much time in their larder.)

if the linen wrap has been pressed by a good cue mechanic,
you should not even notice the wrap
if you do, you are failing to focus on the game.. forget the wrap, be the
cue...

I didn't know anyone over here (in NA) knew what a larder was? My
mother was the first person to have a refrigerator on our block -
prior to that everything was stored in the larder.

I read an awful lot. :) I'll admit I had to double check the
definition before I posted though. Just to make sure I was inferring
what I thought I was inferring. I hate being corrected for my word
usage on an internet board when 90% of the folks posting can't make
complete sentences unless they're correcting someone elses. Or maybe
that's just RGP
