MORGANTOWN, WV. - West Virginia has been picked to win the 2006 BIG
EAST Conference football title and is a strong contender to win the
NCAA Division 1A National Championship in a preseason poll of media
representatives who cover the league teams on a regular basis.
Residents of Morgantown and nearby West Virginia communities are giddy
over the possibility of a national title and undefeated season.
In anticipation of the coming season, Danith Grisby, owner for the
Morgantown Furniture Outlet ("There's so much MORE in Morgantown") is
quadrupiling orders for varieties of sofas and "sofa-like" furniture to
aid in the celebration.
"We got sofas, loveseats, sleepers, sectionals.... 'specialy light
ones with lots o' stuffin' for easy ignition", promised Mr. Grisby.
Morgantown's SofAmericA Factory Outlet president (and cousin and sister
of Mr. Grisby) Taralmenia Davenport, noted that factories are working
overtime to get ready.
"They's been pullin from warehouses all over, even outa state". Noted
Ms. Davenport. "Heck! all them folks in Picksburgh will havta do
without der new cahches this yer!".
Jake Hichtmore, president of the WVU Alumni Association was so
overjoyed by the prospects of this year's Mountaneer football team that
he stopped Ms. Davenport to cheer her on in her efforts.
Said Mr. Hitchmore: "Ah seen er. Ah nowed I nowed er. So I rolled
dahn me wider and wove!"

ummm...riiiiight........WVU isn't a contendor to win anything but the
big east. And I still think they go into louisville and lose.

Then they remember they live in Morgantown and are depressed again.

Not if they're selling their house.
Funny thing about Morgantown...the cost of living to move there is
unbelievable. To get the same type of house that I bought in WNY,
which has better schools, community programs, public services and
quality of life, in Morgantown would cost me at least $100k more. We
tried to relocate back for family reasons, but the job opportunities
and housing costs just were not justifiable.

YMMV, but I like Morgantown. From time to time other people say it's
ok.

the higher ratings are related to the fact that it's only an hour away

Typical college town. Generally higher costs of living than similar
sized towns from similar locations.

does WVU play any decent (i.e., non-Big East) opponents this year?

Having lived there for almost 20 years (until 1995), I have always been
amazed at these "awards." I enjoyed my time there and I go back to
visit friends each year, but I cannot see a compelling reason to move
my family there, even if I took housing out of the equation.

Hah. Except for a few schools in big cities (LA, Austin, Miami, Seattle)
who isn't going to school somewhere that the school is the biggest thing

Not yet. We pick up Missippi State, but that's it for this year and next.
After that we add Auburn for a home-n-home, then Michigan State and FSU.
It's taking a while to fill those sudden holes left by the departure of a
couple of 2nd-tier ACC schools.

it would be sad if WVU gets auto-slotted one of the two BCS-title game
slots due to cupcake schedule.

Why would that be sad? That is what the schools and BCS want by
design.
But yes, from a fans' perspective, the schedule does suck. There were
some circumstances out of our control and the future holds better
matchups. Fortunately, we have some recent history that shows that we
can compete on a BCS-bowl level and a lot of returning kids with that
experience.

This line of argument is stupid to begin with. For years the Big 10 and
Big 8 were Big 2s and little 8s and 6s -- yet the winners of those
conferences proved that they could play with anyone, anywhere, and so there
was no argument that they belonged in their bowl games.
If WVU had gone into the Sugar Bowl and pulled a 2005 Pitt Fiesta Bowl
debacle, the argument might hold a bit of water; but since events proved
otherwise, those who continue to parrot it are either casting bate upon the
waters or know nothing about college football.

the BCS is designed to let one team cake-walk it's way to an 11-0 record
and #1/#2 rank by playing patsies while other top teams knock each other
off? no...

it's astonishing how much WVU and Big East fans have tried to hang on a
eek-it-out 38-35 win over a UGA team that probably took you as lightly
as a team possibly can, thus accounting for the 28-3 lead.
nice win, but says nothing about WVU's general competitiveness vs. top
teams, and surely doesn't merit a 11-0 WVU team that played total patsy
schedule gaining the benefit of the doubt over other top teams that go
say 11-1 or even 10-2 against much tougher schedules.

The non-college parts of those areas are a lot nicer than Morgantown.

WVU and Louisville are both in the preseason top 10. While I despise
preseason polls, and am on record for saying that no polls should come out
until after the third week, if one of them finishes 11-0 out of that
matchup, they deserve a shot just as much as the champ from any other BCS
conference.

A win is a win is a win. Georgia stopped "taking WVU lightly" about two
minutes into the second quarter, if you were paying attention.
Michigan lost about 7 out of 10 Rose Bowls under Bo, yet no one ever
clamored for UM to not be allowed to represent the Big 10 any more.
Texas had to "eke" out a win over USC to win the MNC; does that mean
anything? Of course not.
The funny thing about this discussion is that WVU fans aren't trumpeting
their team as the Next Big Thing as much as haters are denouncing them as
No Big Thing.
If anything, it's the sportswriting media that are singing the praises of
RichRod and his team; the team itself and the fans are holding their
breath, hoping things go well, and wating to "take them one game at a
time."
Some also seem to ignore that the BCS has their own ranking system that
decides who gets to play in The Big Game. Even if the 'Eers go 11-0,
that schedule may well make the difference in the BCS rankings and keep
them out of the big dance. If that happens, you won't hear me
complaining about it: I'll be too busy enjoying a perfect season and
looking forward to another Sugar Bowl, or Rose, or whichever other BCS
bowl they'd end up in.
Ask the Penn Staters how many undefeated seasons they had as Eastern
Independents that didn't get them into the #1 slot because of their
"weak" schedule. It's no new thang.
But I gather your grasp of football history doesn't really go back very
far, does it?

The BCS discourages playing tough opponents OOC.
The variable then becomes whether or not your conference schedule has
merit. In some cases, BCS conference winners suffer in years when
their conference opponents are down. In others, a conference champion
may benefit from the opposite exposure...when a conference has 3 to 4
teams who are overrated and the conference winner is perceived as
having played a "strong" schedule.
With conference championship games now on the radar, it is even rarer
to find teams who play a strong OOC team...which is why Mack Brown
stated that they would never schedule an opponent like OSU in the
future...the system does not reward that type of risk.
So, you end up with teams 'warming up' with 2-3 really bad matchups to
begin the year.
