After conquering consulting the priest in the valley of the dead, I see
no point in continuing. The end-times are mind-numbing, and nowhere near
as interesting or exciting as the middle, or even the beginning.
The fun part is surviving long enough to become indestructible. Is this
what drives people to pursue conducts? Couldn't the end-times be
improved? Wading through hundreds of opponents is not challenging, it is
dull. When tele/jumping is a valid "strategy," you know there's a serious
problem.
Demogorgon, Famine, Death and Pestilence are the only interesting things
about the end-times. There should be less of the mundane and more of that
sort of challenge.

You don't consider the Astral plane a challenge??

Which part do you consider "the middle"? This topic has been discussed
before on this newsgroup, but the usual complaint is that the mid-game
(after clearing the VoTD, before facing Rodney) is the boring part that
needs improvement. As for me, I was bored with Gehennom as soon as I
entered it the first time, partly because it was built up to be so
scary. The "end-game" ascent with the Amulet got kind of fun again,
and was a challenge.

You're right, ascending with the Amulet is pretty fun. I'd forgotten
about that. The mysterious force isn't fun, though. I could do without
that.
I wish there were more monsters like Demogorgon. Now that's a good time.
I am delighted when Demogorgon kills my characters.

I've never lost a character there.

You aren't required to make your character indestructible. Gehennom is
much more exciting when you have an AC of -15 (and don't use a
half-damage artifact).

Which is precisely why I wrote a patch -- should be viewable through
google groups -- that cut out all the levels in Gehenna except the boss
levels. You fight your way through the bad guys (Gorgon is a
guaranteed encounter), you kill the wizard, you continue the ascension.
The slow parts of Gehennom are (mostly) skipped.

This is just another way that NetHack tries to beat you. In this case,
it has worked!
End-game boredom can be beaten with a number of items and tactics, just
like early-game instadeaths can be bypassed with a number of items and
tactics.
Those items and tactics are: cursed and uncursed scrolls of teleport,
teleport control, spellbooks of magic mapping, clairvoyance, conflict,
digging, demon-following and genocide.
