Any ideas on drug taking, performance enhancing illegal acts, sweeping
drug taking under the carpet, fighting on pavements, trashing taxis,
sending racist e-mails, taking dives on the field etc?

Ferdi, you're talking about a country which spent over a billion
federal dollars on sport in the 2000-2001 year alone. That billion
dollars excludes local government funding, international funding and
sponsorship / corporate dollars.
Little indiscretions like consuming performance enhancing and
recreational drugs, rape, sledging, assault and generally being
overpaid louts intent on causing mischief scarcely feature on the moral
radar of any Australian sports fan.
It's universally passed off as an essential part of being a "little
Aussie battler" and "taking hold of the underdog status".
