Just having a look at the Haka from 30 years ago in the other thread, got me
wondering, nowadays do they do thursday afternoon line dancing day so they
are all synchronised. Can imagine when they introduced that, "Right boys
scrum and linout practice has been cancelled today, you were a bloody
disgrace in the last test, today you have dancing lessons"

The haka is a remote piece of maori culture that has been kidnapped and
bastardised beyond all recognition by the ABs as a piece of branding
and as a psyche up tool.

I have no real problem with it, it adds to the spectacle, but I have a
big problem that the opposition are forced by the IRB to have to face
it. As far as I am concerned the ABs and the Islanders should do it for
the cameras and the opposition should be allowed to carry on with their
own preps rather than having to stand thru this uneven psyche up tool.

For any team that I played or coached we would have loved 2 minutes
dedicated to psyching out the opposition (unanswered) right before
kick-off. it would give all teams an advantage.

Besides Its so rooted in Maori culture that the Abs invented a new one
2 years ago with a throat slitting action in it- I suppose other teams
will be accused of not respecting this 'ancient traditional' dance too-
or some other sh*te to that effect.

Let the ABs do their haka but shag off with other teams being forced to
watch it- that is plain biased and unfair - just typically cheater
really.

You seem to be making a rather tedious habit of getting on your soapbox
without having your facts correct or your brain engaged.

How about you point out the IRB ruling that *forces* teams to watch the
haka or stop your whining?

Teamns can do whatever they want during that time, although the last
team to turn their back on it and throw a ball around was the Wallabies
in 96.

They got a pasting.

And, fair play to them, have fronted up ever since. It's pragmatism
really - no point making the ABs REALLY angry. They found out the hard
way.

I for one hope they stand impassively but I'm not Jake and since he
appears to be losing his marbles I have no idea what he'll do. It's not
the fact of making the ABs "REALLY angry" as to just seeming a little
churlish, not to mention how stupid they will look if they go on to get
a pasting as you say.

I didn't mean to be offensive it's just that your comment brought the
image of a loudmouth drunk I saw in a parking lot wanting a fight and
shouting "you're making me REALLY angry and you DON'T want to see me
then".

In any case, why would not fronting up to the Haka make the ABs angry?
It's not for the opposition or the crowds after all, nor is it a pysche
up tool. The ABs only do it for themselves because it's a meaningful
part of their culture. Who cares what the opposition do?

Wrong again Sean-well done- I'd imagine you make a habit of this,
judging by your considerted & informed views, but anyways here's a
little free education and background on the subject for u and other one
eyes.

The Irish stood toe to toe with the All Blacks in Dublin when they were
captained by Willie Anderson (so it must have been circa 1989)- I think
it may have been Wayne Shelfords ABs. Basically the Irish rather than
be intimitated by passively standing by, faced the ABs, linked arms and
then advanced forward as the haka went on so that Willie Anderson the
Irish captain in the middle of the Irish line was basically nose to
nose with Shelford at the end of the psyche up dance. It was gripping
stuff and the crowd absolutely loved it.

Needless to say the NZlanders went on with the usual shite about
disrespecting the Maori heritage, and other blather seen here
occasionally after the game. Anyway following from this and a few other
front ups to the pre match psyche up tools, the IRB made it mandatory
for all teams to line up on their 10 m line to face the prancing blacks
(and other teams dances such as W Samoa, Fiji, etc) on their 10 m.

So yes, although i agree its hard to believe, this psychological
advantage is now enshrined in IRB regulations as to how the game is
run.

I'd say they'd have done the same for Japan if it was them wouldn't
you!?!

Its not pragmatism DoDo its regulations as laid down by the IRB. Jeez
Greig I thought with you working at the NZRFU and all that you'd at
least know where yere psyche up advantage right before kick off is
enshrined in regulations!?! Especially considering the NZRFU must have
lobbied hard to get it in there in the first place.

Do you think any captain would have his team passively stand thru that
psyche out stuff if they didn't have to!?!

Yes it is, considering that the Australians turned their backs and
continued their warmup in 1996. I know that's a big number, so I'll
help you out - it comes AFTER the Willie Anderson incident and the
supposed introduction of this regulation.

I'd say that either provide a link to the regulation that requires teams
to face the All Blacks or stop your whining.

Hey, it's Daz, to be sure, to be sure! And how are ye today, to be
sure to be sure, ye wee leprechaun? Up to mischief still, are we, to
be sure, to be sure?

I don't get this "psyche out" stuff, to be sure, to be sure. If it's
all just a bunch of silly dancing, why would anybody be psyched out,
to be sure, to be sure? So what is it - silly dancing OR a psyche out,
to be sure, to be sure? Can't have it both ways, to be sure, to be

Ah yes, magic stuff indeed. I was at that game and I can tell you it
raised the temperature a fair bit when the Irish team advanced like
that. They weren't a great side but they were prepared to fight and the
crowd appreciated that- alot.

Enough dilly dallying around supposed Maori sensitivities- Stand Up and
Fight- Time to Bring it Back!
