Free beer and a bag of shite.... [message #1071528] Sun, 11 June 2006 23:36

Despite losing both my wagers this weekend, I still bagged some free
beer for helping the neighbours up to the top floor with some wardrobes.
As for England, well we won a lineout, and saw Turqiri land on his arse
just for watching Varndell's feet, we'll be fine, eventually......

You can't look too much into it. Like the AB's they didn't have their full
side available. Most teams played with the disjointedness of not having
played together for a while.

Oh I think you can. You can read that the backs still don't understand
the concept of line running, side-stepping, angles, etc. ... or at
least the coaching staff don't.

A second row observed that

1. They stand too close together.
2. They are not coming onto the ball from deep enough or at enough
pace.
3. There's no lines, it's all too easy to defend against.
4. As they go through phases and the set piece formation of the backs
disappears, nobody is taking control of who goes where.
5. There did not appear to be a defensive leader.

But then what do i know about back play....................apparently
more than some

To be fair they never really stood a chance... too much static ball from
the forwards, the fact the Aussie loosies were able to lurk in the
backline rather than being forced to commit to the ruck or maul,
Richards' step before passing and Barkley's indecision didn't really
give anyone from 12 out a chance.

I thought Sanderson, although he played well, showed his limitations as
an 8 - England desperately lacked someone giving them some go forward
through the heavy traffic. Sanderson when he attempted it had little
support and became isolated on a few occasions.

Moody and Lund were quiet. Smith easily winning the points in the loose
forward battle.

Moody certainly seemed awol on the restarts....
I can only imagine Barkley is being groomed for back-up 10 after
Hodgson, assuming we never see Wilko again. He'll need some time at 10
for Bath if he's to play there for England, not sure how likely that is
now tbh....
Sanderson and Lund ought to be hammering out a routine together for next
weekend.
Apart from that, we need 4 more props....

couple of comments about the game....
- scoreline didn't reflect the effort by England; good workrate, crap
finishing
- rush defence only really works for half a game, after that all it
does is create gaping holes
- Wallabies front row still shaky as hell; need to learn not to play
silly buggers at the outset as the refs will quickly get wise to this.
- Vardnell is still in Sevens mode, too unsettled to be playing the
full 80.
