At our club there's a player that is one of the nicest guys you'll
ever meet. If you told him that you needed a couple of hundred and
didn't know if, or when, you could repay him, he'd be in his pocket in
a heartbeat.
But. He'll cheat you on the golf course over and over and over. It
doesn't matter whether it's a $20 or $1 nassau. He was in our group
for an Olds Scramble once, and on the 11th hole we all missed a 6 ft.
putt for birdie. Two holes later I noticed that he had entered the
birdie. I mentioned it, he said that he thought we had made bird, but
corrected it. Three holes after that I noticed that the birdie was
back on 11 and told him so. He forgot, he said, erased it and
corrected it. When we finished we went over the card and the fucking
birdie was back! We railed at him and watched as he corrected it.
Then he turned in the card. Later, on our way out, we saw on the
scoreboard that we had birdied the 11th. This is for an Olds
Scramble and we weren't even in the running, with or without that
birdie.
First of all, he's a pretty good player, 7 handicap. He doesn't need
to cheat. I've seen him bump his ball, pencil-whip, and when he has a
bet with someone out of his group, that someone had best look at his
scorecard and not let him just call out scores.
Everyone knows this, and it got so bad that several years ago on a
Friday afternoon, after the regular men's day tournament when there
was a big crowd in the 19th hole, he was presented with a letter,
signed by over 30 players that outlined his transgressions.
Incidentally, this was after several of his friends had pulled him
aside to discuss it with him, to no avail. The letter said that from
that day on he was NOT to keep score in any group, and that further
cheating would result in his not being able to get a game with any of
them. He was contrite, apologized, and said that he'd clean up his
act. That was about 5 years ago...and he's back to his old ways.
We've come to the conclusion that it's a sickness with him. We know
what has to be done, but it's really a drag since he is such a good
guy off the course.

We had an asst. pro at our course who was a great player, but always
had to sign for 1 stroke lower than he shot. Once I saw him shoot 64
and sign for a 63. I mean, 64 is a pretty damned impressive score by
itself! He just couldn't help it.
And once he got that bad rep he was done. It got so bad that at one
local Pro-Am he shot 65 and was the Low Pro and the newspaper said,
"his scorecard showed a 65."
Not that he shot 65, but that "his scorecard showed a 65."
It's kinda like my barber, who when someone approached him for a golf
wager and inquired about his handicap would reply, "I carry a 26
Handicap Card."
We never did find out who that card belonged to.
When I was the hdcp chairman at my club back in the day GHIN would send
the handicap stickers to us to put on the handicap cards of the
members. There would usually be a few blank ones at the end that
hadn't been printed on. Every sandbagger's dream .... a "fill in the
blank" handicap card. Needless to say, I didn't lose too many out of
town matches back in those days. I called it my "Away" handicap. I
was Scratch at Home and 18 Away. And with my swing, who'd notice?

It's a private club? Any way to prevent him from playing in
competitive events? Or even more drastic, kick him out.

Yep, private club. It's hard to explain, but we all like him so
damned much that I guess we'll just have to go on as before and just
watch him, and call him, on everything we see.

Watch him like a hawk, and never ever *ever* let him take part
in any bets again. Which I know is a huge PITA, but having a guy
like that in your game just totally screws up the enjoyment of
the competition, IMO. It's hard enough to play your own game
without having to supervise his.

Damned unfortunate, Bobby. Kinda like the cheating hubby who charms
his spouse with dinner and flowers after every transgression. We had a
high roller in town who every couple of years or so would be adding
another wing onto the residence.
Funny how it coincided with various uncovered daliances.

Thankfully I don't play in his group, but ours does play his group
each week in a team bet. Also thankfully, there are a couple of guys
in that group that do watch him.
Incidentally we refer to them as "Team Evil". They all know what we
mean by that.

Getting rid of a guy that is easy. All it takes is a continuous peer
pressure on his golf buddies something like how can you let that guy steal
your money. After a while nobody wants to be seen playing with him and he
leaves to find a new set of suckers.

If he is that bad, nobody with any integrity will pair with him in a multi
player event. In one ball, put three anal retentive assholes that brook no
cheating in his foursome.

Well, you can't possibly like him for his integrity, so is he giving
everyone good bjs?
How do you know he's a good guy off the course? He's probably ripping
you off blind. I see a correlation between cheaters on the course and
cheaters in life.

Yeah, now maybe.
Besides, if you get the bet right to start with, you don't have to
cheat!
Nice of you to say it anyway. Mikey and I used to have a list of folks
that we could always trust. You know, those guys who you could have a
good bet with and you wouldn't have to be in their group to keep
everything on the up and up. They'd come in, call off their scores and
we'd pay up or collect. Unfortunately, it was a pretty short list.
I've seen some guys who I wouldn't trust on a bet if I was in their
cart with them.
On that note, I will say this. I've played a few RSG events with a lot
of different folks, many of them who I don't exactly see eye-to-eye
with (guess I'm too short). But I've never played with any RSGer who I
wouldn't trust to play a fair match. The spirit of the game seems to
infect all those who stay around here. It seems to be the one thing
that all you loons have in common. Trolls excluded, of course.

One funny thing about reading the newsgroups via Google Groups is the
little links they provide that are related to the topic. In this

This situation is an anomaly. There has never been anything shady, or
even suggestive, about his conduct anywhere but on the golf course.
As I said, he just has a sickness about wanting to win there.

one of my friends and another guy I know are just starting out in golf.
last year we played a bit of pay-n-play before they entered the club.
both had *trouble counting* oddly enough always in one direction ;)
being persitant has fixed the issue with my fired, the other guy I dont
know yet as he just got into the club, but Ill give it a shot ;)
btw now my focus on my friend has moved onto 'rudimentary' rules.. like
how you traet your lie...
today I had to tell him he got two penalty strokes as he broke off a
twig in his effort to get a stance "but its a dead tree" ... "yes but
its not a moveable object..." ;)
bot always easy..
but keep in mind its not always because people want to cheat..
I myself were early in my career playing a turnament, when someone
pointed out I was in a hazardm when I grounded my club... the second he
said it I knew it was a penalty, and I felt pretty emabrrased, since it
felt like I had been trying to cheat.. :/ I was just too focused on
getting that dang ball on the green ;)

This one is simple, the guy's he's playing with have to call him on it.
And if he doesn't add the penalty strokes to his score, you DQ him for
signing an incorrect score card.

I think when your friend was learning the game the rules weren't taken
seriously enough. So now it's just how he plays. Unfortunate for him and
everyone he plays with.
When I was first getting started with golf the guy who was teaching me to
play was adamant about cheating. Why? When he was a junior he was caught
cheating in a bit tournament and disqualified. It was so traumatic that he
quit tournament golf and even quit golf altogether for a couple of years.
You learn the rules because they can work to your advantage, but you
never, ever cheat. After that start I don't even think about rolling the
ball, so I can't claim any sort of moral superiority. It's just how you
get started.

When I learned to play golf I ignored most rules (didnt' even know most
of the rules anyway, still don't know them all). I think that is
probably how most people learn golf. You don't need a lot of rules when
you start. Just learn to hit the ball, do-overs are good practice when
you are learning. Yet, everybody doesn't go on to be habitual cheats.
There's just something inside some people that's different. For them
the challenge is not about the game or even winning... it's about
cheating and getting away with it.

I should add that I didn't play in tourneys or for bets at that either
though. It was all just for fun.

Oh, I would. Think of all those years he used his cheatin' range

You are going to ruin your reputation if you keep writing nice stuff
like this :-)
But it really is amazing to me the quality of golf I have seen at RSG
events.
Not skill in hitting shots or scoring, but in appreciation and respect
and love
for this great gemme. It is why I keep going to them and keep holding
RSG-Ohio each
year. It seems crazy to go long distances to play golf on ordinary
courses
with people you never met... but it is always worth it. Anybody who
has not been to an event should try one out! It is easy.
RSG-Cinncciinnnaattii is next week and
RSG-Ohio is Sept 15-17. Sign up for one!

Make sure to sign him up with 3 well-prepared players to do this to
the max next time.

I played in a low-ball with a guy who shot an 82. I was the captain in
charge of the scores so after I turned in the card he asked, "What did
you have me down for .... 74 ?"
I said, "Nope, 82. You gotta count em all, not just the ones you
liked."
I think that motto should be printed on every scorecard:
"COUNT EM ALL, NOT JUST THE ONES YOU LIKE."
Or the Latin: "E Pluralbust Addem"

Geez, I'd rather lose with a low handicap than win sandbagging, what
fun is that? The thing is that sometimes the atmosphere of an RSG
event brings out the best in me, I'm relaxed, don't care, and play
better than my handicap . . . sometimes, than other times, I suck,
like getting an 18 on #8 (?) at the Players Club, but then that's just
golf.
And Annika may have that cheatin' range finder, but he doesn't use it
around the greens. That fucker gets up and down from everywhere. If I
had his or Tex's short game, I WOULD be a 10, or less.

Well, what's stopping you from getting that short game?
