Hi, RSGers. I'm now living in the south of Austin, in the area known as
Dripping Springs. It's lovely and I hear there are some golf courses in
these parts, so life couldn't be better...

Hey Alan, what's up?
Looks like I'll have to head over that way. I've always liked the
Austin area. How about a mini RSG Austin for the fall? Isn't Birdie
Bill around those parts too?

Hi Alan!
I'm in Oak Hill, just down the road from you. We'll have to get
together
sometime. What is your email? Maybe I can get it from Strauss,
if you'd rather not post it. The one I post with is defunct,
due to spam issues.
I wouldn't mind an RSG_Austin in the fall with you and David, after it
cools down a bit. Maybe we can get Clary to come up, too? There
are at least 3 other RSGers close by, as well.

Star Ranch between Hutto and Pflugerville would be a good place for a
CenTex RSG event; fun track, not real expensive and good service.
I'm in Copperas Cove, about 80 miles north of Oak Hill and Dripping
Springs, and would be good for a Fall event. We're taking out motor
home to the west coast for six or seven weeks mid-August to about
mid-October to spend some time with our son in the Seattle area then
wander down the coast to San Diego. Outside of that period I'm good to
go about any time.

Hey Kenn, if when you're traveling south in CA you happen to be on 101
rather than I5 why not stop in here and play a round at my golf course?
I'm just south of San Luis Obispo at Cypress Ridge GC. If you're
interested let me know at dave at ddpcad dot com. Beautiful weather here
in Oct!

Will do. My (rough) plan is to come down the Oregon coast on 101 as far
as Coos Bay (I have an old Air Force buddy who lives in Neskowin), cut
inland to I5 to Los Banos, cut over to Monterey to visit the aquarium
there then go down 101 to somewhere it is convenient to pick up I5
again, probably Oxnard/Ventura area.

My general travel plan is to visit friends in Albuquerque then follow
the easter slope of the Rockies up through Colorado, Wyoming and Montana
to I90 then follow I90 to Seattle. Leaving San Diego it will be I8
across southern Arizona to I10 to about Sonora where I'll pick up US190
on into home. If anyone is along that route and would like to get in a
game I'll do my best to work it into my very loose schedule.

when you travel from Seattle to San Diego once in CA you have to take
either Interstate 5 (the fast route) or Highway 101 (the scenic route)
unless you're either taking a ferry or going out in the NV desert in a
roundy bout way :) And you can do a combo, like take I5 to Sacramento
and cut over through San Jose area then down 101. It's a really nice
drive down 101 through the whole state of CA if you have the time to do
that.
Anyway, if you get down this way on your way to San Diego I'd enjoy
playing a round of golf with you. There's lots of nice RV areas right on
the beach near here too!

oops, sorry! Didn't see this reply before I posted to the other one. If
that's you're plan, I'm 1 1/2 miles from the 101 freeway in Arroyo
Grande. If you'll email me I'll reply with my phone number so you can
get me when you're coming down if you have time to play (lots of great
shopping around here if wifey needs something to do :)

Not only that, there are a few RSG'ers in the SF Bay Area, also. If you
decide to go through this area, let me know. :-)

Alan,
Gas is now $3/gallon and traffic and pollution in Austin are both
critical. Why on earth did you choose Dripping Springs?!
(Imagine how everyone's quality of life would improve if we all
lived close to work. Not sure how to accomplish that, but maybe
everybody being aware how good that would be might make a decent
start.)

I agree with Chris that Austin traffic is abominable, I'll go 50 miles
out of my way to avoid taking I35 through it with the motor home.
Alan, if you haven't found it yet just west of Dripping Springs on 290
is a place called New Canan Farms, north side of the highway. They
make great jellies, jams and salsas. We were there week before last and
bought two cases of stuff to take on our trip west as gifts for friends.

Well, Peter, it isn't completly out of the question yet. We could just
wander down 101 as far as Vallejo and the East Bay. One problem is that
land is so expensive there that there aren't a helluva lot of RV parks
in the East Bay. Tilden Park stays booked up months in advance and they
close an lock the gates at 10:00, not real convenient. When we were
there for Gail's Oakland High 50th reunion we had to stay over on the
Peninsula and come across the bridge to the festivities.
Still, it isn't out of the question and should I show up it will be with
a bottle of New Canan Farm's XXXHabanero in hand. Have water available.

I almost played Star Ranch once, but I got rained out. Looked like a
nice place, though. Maybe we can start thinking about a late October
date for an RSG_Austin, if that suits other schedules.
I think I'll try to get together with Alan before that, though.

There's a KOA just south of Santa Cruz, out by Manresa Beach. I stayed
there once, it's a nice place, if you are into the KOA thing. That
would be
right on your way to Monterey. You could play with Peter & Dan at
Tilden
in the morning, and then make it to the KOA in plenty of time later.
Better
yet, get them to meet you in Holister and play San Juan Oaks.
There's also a state park in Santa Cruz just off Park Ave that has camp
sites.
Not sure if it has hookups, though. And there is camping at Big Basin
State Park, in Boulder Creek, if you want the Redwoods experience,
and several RV parks in Felton.

We might be visiting one of my wife's high school classmates in
Livermore and I think there are some parks out that direction. Not too
far to Oakland to drive for a round. And I said Tilden Park but I think
it is Chabot which has some RV spaces.

Sounds good--especially if it's south of Austin. I had to travel

It was the nicest place we looked at. I know how you feel about the suburbs
around Round Rock, like Cedar Park and Leander. Well, I did not like them
any better than you. The traffic sucked and I was not enamoured of the
neighborhoods either. Believe me, we really looked.
Besides, in DFW, I drove 18 miles in one direction, my wife drove 28 miles
in the opposite direction. Wherever we lived in the Metroplex we would have
about the same total mileage. Now we have reversed with her going 17 miles
and me going 35. But the gas used is about the same since she gets 20mpg
and I get 30mpg. IOW, we use about 4 oz more per day in gas (10 cents
worth). As to traffic, when I can go 35 miles in 45 minutes, I am ok with
that. Also, I hope to be much closer to home by the end of this year...

I'm aware, but I was not ready to buy into a sucky situation. When we were
looking, we found a couple of neat homes in nice neighborhoods that backed
up to a main drag. At 10:30 in the morning the traffic noise was unreal (in
one case we could hear it through double pane windows) and I could not
imagine rush hour. We looked at probably 50+ homes and something closer to
work was very desirable, but we had to compromise somewhere and this was the
best package. It is lovely here.

We looked in Dripping Springs, and nearly bought a house out there.
You
can find very nice houses with great lots, views, and privacy at a
reasonable
price. But in the end, it was just too much of a drive to get into
town from
there for us. Plus, most of the houses we looked at seemed like they
had
water tanks. I didn't really like that idea.
Whereabouts are you in DS? Close to Barton Creek?

OK, I can see that. Dripping Springs is far nicer than those burbs.
But damn, that trip up 360 and Mopac has gotta suck.

Late October or early November sounds good to me.

Not so far. 35 miles in 45 minutes including a couple of lights on 290.
BTW, I never get on 360. But MoPac slows down where 360 splits off. About
1.5 miles of slow going and then its 70mph until just outside of Round Rock
where MoPac is under construction. Then it slows down for another 1.5
miles. But even with that, I make it to work in 45 minutes. I am not sure
of the time going back home since I have not left at a "regular" time yet.
I have classes Tues & Thurs night and leave for home about 7:30. The other
days have been either leaving early to get some errands run or leaving late
to catch up with work. I am guessing about an hour on the way home. Makes
me feel like I am back in LA!

OK!
Dave, David, and Kenn:
Could you all send email to birdie_bill at hotmail.com? I think one or
more of you might have an outdated email address for me. Although
I know we've sent email before, for some reason I don't see any
record of it in my address book.
I think it is a little early to get serious about planning this, but we
can
start talking it over.
