Playing better by playing harder courses [message #1067755] Sa, 10 Juni 2006 02:32

I keep really detailed stats, and have devised my own "difficulty
index" for each course. Basically it's an overall difficulty rating.
My formula is

Rating * Slope /113.

What I've found is that by playing pretty tough tracks, longer
distances, higher ratings, higher slopes, everything in my game
improves.

My average "difficulty index" for this year is 81.32. To put that into
perspective, that's like playing a 70.9/130 rating on average. Much of
my lower ones are because of my golf league, and I'm routinely playing
72.3/135, 71.7/137 courses.

What I've found is that I don't get intimidated by any holes anymore.
I never have negative thoughts when hitting a shot, because I'm
averaging 80 on the 72.3/135 courses. It has improved my course
management, improve my thought process, and improved my confidence all
around.

averaging 80 on 72.3/135 courses is playing some serious golf! What's
your index if I might ask? The two courses that I play day in and day
out are 72.9/134 and 73.6/129. My index at the first is 11.1 and my
index at the second is 14.5. Sometimes slope ratings by themselves lie :)

Wrong wrong wrong. You need to learn to win on a miniature golf
course first.

Thx. 7.1, trending to 6.2. Got down to a 3.9 at one point last year,
but I'm a full stroke ahead of last year for the same time period.
The 72.3/135 course isn't even that long, just 6450. The next tee box
are the tips at 7100 and are 74.3/140. I haven't been back there yet,
but maybe I'll try it this week. There are 2 or 3 par 4's however,
that are pretty big doglegs. I'm not sure I can hit my drive far
enough even on the best attempt to have a clear shot at the green.

Different courses can definitely set up to help or hinder your game,
that's for sure. The 71.7/137 course I believe is underrated too.
There's hardly a shot you can miss, as there's deep heather and the
hardest 80 bunkers you'd probably ever play in the US.
