I've had a few excursions below 90 this past year and was always happy when
they happened. Breaking 80 wasn't even a goal yet as I didn't think it was
attainable. Low and behold today I shot a 79. Couldn't believe it.
42 - Out
37 - In
79 - Total
10 - Pars
7 - Boggies
1 - Double
11 - Fairways
6 - GIR
32 - Putts
It was one of the easiest rounds I've ever played. I didn't realize I had
shot that low until I added it up. In retrospect maybe it's a good thing I
didn't know what was going on until it was over.
Most memorable hole was #15 a 385 yard par 4. After a decent tee shot I hit
a 185 yard 5 wood to within 4 feet of the pin. I missed the birdie but man
you should have seen that 5 wood. It was a thing of beauty.
What I would like to know though is how one shoots a 99 on Tuesday and a 79
on Thursday? That's a 20 shot swing.
Not looking forward to playing tomorrow. You know what happens after a good
round.

congratulations Pat. It now gets easier as the pressures off :) Btw, I
never keep track of my score for a round ever. Nothing worse than going
to 18 knowing you need par to shoot 79. Always leads to a shanked shot
during the hole somewhere for me ;)

Not to piss on Pat's cornflakes, but when does par become a factor in
"breaking 80, 90, whatever." Here it looks like par was 70. If par was
68, would it still be "breaking 80?"

He broke 80. Maybe not at Pine Valley, but it is a milestone and I

Congratulations Pat. I feel your joy. I'm still measuring my progress in
great holes rather than rounds. My time will come, yours is now, enjoy
it fully, bask in the warmth of its glow.
Tell us more, how long playing, what course, course length, rating,
slope, etc. These milestones are usually hard to reach and
congratulations are definitely in order.

Nice round, Pat! Congratulations. I just broke 80 for the first time
myself. Feels great, doesn't it?
> It was one of the easiest rounds I've ever played. I didn't realize I had

I don't know about that. I always pay attention to my score. I don't
actually add it up; I just keep it in my head in relation to bogey. This
goes back to when my goal was to play bogey golf (90 at the course I
play).
Anyway, I had a double on 14, putting me at 7 over par for the day, so I
knew immediately that I had to par the last 4 holes to break 80 and I quit
worrying about it. Didn't figure I had a chance, as the 17th is a par 3
that I almost never par. Well, I parred the 15th, nearly birdied the 16th
and settled for par, then did the impossible: I parred the 17th. After
that, I only needed a par on the 494-yard par 5 18th. I always go for
that green in two and usually end up in the huge bunker in front of it,
but this time I played it a little smarter. I went for the right side of
the green, where there is a flower bed (free drop) and a cart path (free
drop) and beyond that the 9th fairway (good lie). I actually ended up
*just* right of the elevated green, so, no drop, but I had an easy chip
shot and two putt for par and my first ever 79.
I think it's more fun to feel some pressure, personally. Knowing you have
to make par, and then making it...that's fun.

Not enough Bloody Marys on Tuesday?

My next round is Saturday. I can't wait. I'll probably quadruple bogie
the first hole and resign myself to playing for skins, but I still can't
wait. It *feels* like I should birdie all the par 5s, par all the par 4s,
and bogie all the par 3s (my iron play sucks), ending with even par for
the day. It feels like that every week. Heh.
Good luck tomorrow, and remember: no matter how you're playing, it's
better than working.

I break 80 occasionally and don't keep track of my score to do it. I can
generally tell that I'm either playing well or not playing well but I
don't leave the first green and make a note to myself "you're even".
Some of the worst let downs I've had on the golf course were the result
of adding up my score a few holes before finishing and saying to myself
"if you can par in you can shoot even par" or some such. Just puts undo
pressure on oneself

Was playing with my Uncle a week and a half ago and he shot 58 on the front
and 42 on the back, 16 stroke swing in 9 holes. So what was the biggest
factor between shooting 79 and 99? Driving, putting, course management?
I shot 86 with my Uncle which is not that bad of a score for me. Was
standing on the 17 tee with nothing more than a bogey on the card thinking I
should easily bogey or better the last two and for once have a round with
nothing worse than bogey and sure enough, pulled my approach, it was a
hanging lie, left into the hazard and ended up with a triple.

Congrats Pat. Hope you had some buddies there with you to help celebrate
your accomplishment. The first time I broke 80 I was all by myself. I felt
great knowing I had reached a goal, but to be honest it was kind of a let
down at the same time cause i had no one to high five or discuss over a beer
later on.

Congrats on breaking 80. An excellent accomplishment IMO.
As to your question about 79 and 99... last fall on consecutive days in
Bermuda, I shot a 78 and then a 101. Different courses (Port Royal and
Mid-Ocean). Different difficulty. One course had greens faster than
Teflon. But it was still a swing of 23. Last week I shot a 91 at the
course I shot 101 at last year (Mid-Ocean).
Sometimes you get the bear... and sometimes the bear gets you.

Congratulations. Very good job. I went below 90 last autumn, and if I
continue to improve as I've been, I'm thinking I might get to 80 at
least once before this season is over. Your story is inspiring.
But that 20 stroke swing is big. Was it on the same course?
Still, 20 strokes is just one on every hole. An extra putt, a bit of a
duff 6 iron, etc. They add up in a hurry, don't they.
But not today. Enjoy it.

Congratulations, Pat! Most golfers play their whole lives and don't ever
shoot in the 70's.
I don't remember breaking 100 or 90, but I remember breaking 80 like it
was yesterday. I knew what my score was. I was just inside the 150 marker
on the last hole and I needed a par for 79. I was nervous as hell. Somehow
I calmed down and made a perfect swing. Too perfect, I airmailed the
green. I figured I was going to make bogey and shoot 80 (again) so I just
got up there and hit it. Perfect little chip, tap-in par, 79. It was
great.

Congratulations on the round and don't sweat tomorrow's. It will take care of
itself.

Congratulations Pat! Well done. If you ever find an answer to your
question let me know, the last time I shot 79 it was the day after a
101!

Congratulations Pat!
Just don't tell any of your regular golfing buddies -- that was my downfall ;-)

Boy, that's the truth. My game has suffered for many, many months
now, and about two weeks ago I shot 7 under my handicap (don't ask,
it's embarrassing), told some buddies, then shot 8 over my handicap
the next day.

Great round.......I'm with you, I shot 79 one day and the next day on the
same course I shot a 93. But congratulations on a great round.

Yes, no matter what the par is, shooting 79 is breaking 80.
:-) It deserved a smartass reply.
I've played many par 70 courses that were harder than par 72s. What
really counts in the long run is your handicap differential for that
round. I rarely judge myself on my final score anymore, rather than
the differential.

My first 79 was simular to yours except that I had a 39&40. I normally
shoot around 85. My best front 9 was a 38 and I combined it with a 52
back nine for a terrible 90!
