My Ball - The Callaway HX Hot [message #1067388] Do, 08 Juni 2006 20:30

This is the ball I have settled on and I get it for $24.99 a dozen.

Pro's:

Very, very long off the tee.

Stops on a dime using an 8-LW.

Putts Roll very true.

Pretty durable.

Cons:

Will roll a bit with longer irons.

No green side spin with chipping.

The two cons don't really bother me at all as I rarely have long irons into
greens and I don't play any "skip and check up" shots around the green.

I shot a 34 on the front 9(par 36) of my home course today with this ball
and that pretty much sealed the deal on keeping this as "my ball". I 've
been such a golf 'Ho the past couple of years changing out equipment and
what not(I'm on my 5th driver in 3 1/2 years of playing). I think I can
finally settle down and as good as I am playing with this current set up,
don't change anything.

What about Pinnacle Gold balls for less $$$ as recommended by Consumer
Report?

Never tried them, but I have tried the Pinnacle Exception for $17 and it
performed pretty well. I liked everything accept the way it putted.

Well, they are less money then some balls and recommended by Consumer
Reports.

But, I don't know if Consumer Reports hits the same caliber of clanks,
skidders, wheezers, whoopsies, worm-burners, divot-divers and hosel rockets
that you do.

Yes, although I put a new ball into play every 18 or 27 holes - no
problem, at that price.

As I said, this is the thing that made me switch. I thought the HX-Hot
hurt my up-and-down stats. I like to spin and control my chips, and the
Hot just doesn't spin enough.

For this season I switched to the Bridgestone Tour B330-S. It's not
quite as long as the Hot, but I'm only losing a few yards on my driver.
I love the spin, though. I've backed up a few full irons, and the
chip-and-check on greenside chips is great.

The B330 is a little bit expensive, and not as durable as the ProV1.
Normal retail is $39.95, but I was able to get a dozen for $33.96 at
tgw.com. I'll get 18 holes out of one ball, then send it to the shag
bag. My ball expenses are up this year, but if they're more fun to play
with, and help me score better, it's worth it.

I would think that if you like the HX Hot except for the last 'con',
then the HX Tour 56 would be a good choice. Price is the same as the
Bridgestone Tour B330-S.

While my game sucks most of the time, there are days when things just
click. I keep a sleeve of HX Tour 56's in the bag just for those few
days.

I didn't realize the price of the HX Tour 56 was the same as the B330.
I may have to give it a try - I am a believer in the power of the hex
dimples for good ball flight.

They used to be about $45, but last time I was at Golf USA they were
$39.99...

You should try a sleeve of HX Tours some time. I played with the HX Hot
for a really long time because I hit it farther than any other ball I'd
ever tried. On a lark, I bought a sleeve of HX Tours at the pro shop and
in the first round with them I hit the longest drive of my life. For some
reason, I hit them longer and straighter than the HX Hot, even though
they're supposed to be the same. They have a better feel than the Hots
(softer around the greens, too), which always felt to me like I was
hitting a rock.

I'm still playing out of the first dozen HX Tours I bought a few months
ago, but next time I'm getting the HX Tour 56. The regular Tours scuff
too easily, although I can't tell any difference in play. Still, it bugs
me a little, and the 56 is supposed to address that.

I'll give them a try. I could probably justify since I don't lose many
balls, and god willing my wife will never find out what I spend on a box of
golf balls.

I can't get over the notion that my putter is going to strike one right
on the edge and send it skirting off to one side. I'm sure it's all
psychological, but I just can't putt confidently with them.
