Thorne Pulls Out Of Junior ABs
29/05/2006
XtraMSN
Crusaders veteran Reuben Thorne has withdrawn from the Junior All Blacks
squad, opting for a recovery and reconditioning programme after a full Rebel
Sport Super 14 season.
North Harbour loose forward Anthony Boric replaces Thorne in the Junior All
Blacks squad, with a new captain to be named in due course.
Thorne was the senior figure in the Juniors but his decision came after the
Super 14 Final and consultation with the All Blacks selectors.
"Reuben is an extremely experienced player who holds himself to very high
standards and we respect his decision," said All Blacks coach Graham Henry.
"We picked him for the Junior All Blacks because of his good form and
leadership abilities but he tells us he needs a recovery window right now,
so that's the best thing."
The 31-year-old Thorne played in every Super 14 match for the title-winning
Crusaders this season.
He has amassed more than 100 Super 14 appearances along with 69 provincial
caps and 41 tests for the All Blacks.

And he didn't know this BEFORE they named the team?
Very unprofessional.

Don't be ridiculous. The unprofessionalism came from the nitwits (and
we know who they are) who didn't ask him beforehand.
Good on Thorne for giving Henry the finger (if that is in fact what
he's done). Asking him to captain the 'Juniors" is as insulting as
asking Olivier to play the gravedigger in Hamlet. Henry is a disgrace,
eh Bobs?

Rubix is a fucking disgrace, that's what. Henry would have told him
weeks ago, probably months ago, he would be captain of the A side. And
now he pulls out after the team is announced because he's tired.
Whatever. I bet he's not too tired if suddenly he gets an AB callup.
Never give that man any type of black jersey ever again. The true story
is that Rubix thinks he's bigger than the jersey and sulked when he was
given the A team captaincy. So he packed a sad and threw around his
toys.
And Oliver would make a great fucking gravedigger in Hamlet. He looks
like a half-witted drongo, and talks like one too.

I suspect that the "he" that Rick referred to is GH / your "them", not
Rubix.

Are you saying Henry didn't sound him out about the role before
selecting him in it? I find that very hard to believe.

It certainly would be if Thorne was not consulted before selection. I
just cannot imagine the All Black coaching team would do that.

Have you lost your other eye now? Of COURSE they would have informed

Why is it insulting to ask him to captain a New Zealand representative
side? He had the Crusaders captaincy stripped from him yet was still
big enough to step up when asked when McCaw was rested. Henry has been
let down by the so called "team man" of Canterbury.

It seems obvious that Rubix puts Cunterbury first, NZ second. It was
also clear, according to Anton Oliver, that Deans did the same when he
was assistant AB coach.

Well Henry and Co wouldn't have, that's for sure, because I bet they
didn't even speak to him before the selection.
Personally, I think Thorne would've had every right to say 'Stick your
Junior All Blacks up your fucking arse you miserable two faced cunts.'
The man is an ex-AB captain, he has 41 tests up his sleeve, he's won more
Super competition and NPC trophies than any other cunt, and this is the
way he gets treated?
Love him or hate him, he's never been a whining cunt, he's never bitched
to the media, he's never had his wedding photo's published in the slag
mags, he just got on with it.
Bucks's dropping was pretty cold, but Thorne has been treated really
shabbily IMO, even if you didn't rate him as an AB.

Months ago? You're dreaming. He might've heard a few days ago, even a
week or two. And if he took a week or two to reply, then good on him. Why
shouldn't he have finally decided he needed the refresh after the final,
I doubt he would've had his mind on anything else until that game was
over.
It's not his fault that the selectors confirm the team within 24 hours of
the final taking place.
If he was a Blues player he would've had several weeks since his last
game (ahem) to confirm that he needed the refresh, but being a Crusader,
he simply didn't have that luxury.

What was shabby? If they don't think he's good enough to be in the ABs
is that shabby? Do you think they should have picked him anyway on
sentimental grounds or something? Offering him the opportunity to get
paid to tour, play some rugby and mentor some up and comers is shabby?

FFS Os, how would you have treated him differently if you were
selecting but didn't want him in the top team?. Send him flowers?
Frankly it defies common sense that they management would have
announced him as captain without telling him first. The current
management has a history of applying common sense, unlike their
predecessors.

I was under the impression that they decided on the AB captaincy very
early on in the piece but squad members and other squads wouldn't be
confirmed until later in comp so they could get the best view on how form
pans out etc... The Junior AB's are a fair way down the list and I can't
imagine that they'd have had it nailed months ago. I might be wrong
though.

By making their first act as selectors to drop him completely out of the
extended AB squad, they nailed their colours to the flag. Now they're
throwing him a bone like some sort of charity case. Thorne isn't the sort
of player to look brilliant one week and shit the next, he plays the way
he does and you either go for it or you don't. So what's changed with
these guys or are they just trying to please everybody? Not exactly two-
faced but I just wanted to add a little more offensiveness into my
statement. I'm no Matua though, it must be said.

If they rate him, he should be in. If they don't, he should be out. This
Captain of the Juniors position is just crap, he isn't a junior. They may
as well have shat on his mother's bed. It's like tossing the poor
embarrassed cunt a bone when he hasn't even been whining.

Left him out I suppose. If he's so far out of Henry's plans to go from AB
Captain to not good enough for a squad the size of Africa, then what good
can he be for the Junior AB's? He'll just embed all his Reuben-style
weaknesses into our future greats, surely?

Yeh you're probably right. I don't have a problem with Henry & Co, I
think they've done a great job overall. I do think Thorne has been
treated a little harshly though, I don't think he's the 5th best No 6 in
the country yet they seem way more willing to chuck a black jersey on
everyone else and their dog. It's a little like the Marty holah dropping
from the squad last year, it just seems a little harsh for that happen to
an experienced player who doesn't appear to be _that_ out of form.

You have to have been an Auckland Rent Boy to get the best treatment -
sort of understandable - Coach's are like the rest of us - they
arrogantly believe that they can get more out of a player than their
current next to useless coach - so they pick them - eg Williams,
Flavell, Nonu etc

Thorne vs Jnr ABs debate
30/05/2006 12:04:02
The Reuben Thorne-Junior All Blacks issue continues to gain momentum.
Thorne says he has pulled out of the captaincy because he is jaded. But
it is clear he is not too happy about a selection snub from the All
Blacks squad.
His wife Kate Thorne has called Radio Sport talkback, saying the
communication lines between her husband and the national selectors have
not been that open.
She says all the debate about Reuben's withdrawal is the last thing he
actually wanted to happen...
Kate Thorne says her husband does not want it to look like he is throwing
his toys but she says he has worked really hard and she is disappointed
for him.
She says Graham Henry left a fairly cryptic message on Reuben's phone
recently, but the first they knew of him captaining the Junior All Blacks
was Sunday morning.
