Well done Sale [message #1037255] Sa, 27 Mai 2006 19:45

I really enjoyed the game - totally outplayed Leicester - seemed like they
got past all the conditions, the only time it showed was when people slipped
on the turf etc.

I remember someone posting that Sale's season might have been over after
they got dumped out of the Euro cup and remember thinking he may be right,
so it was good to see the league leaders and most inspired rugby I have seen
in the Premiership prevail.

Well done.

Curiously, I found myself in the odd and slightly uncomfortable
position of supporting a side that contained Charlie Hodgson. After
twenty minutes or so, and about thirty-six cross field kicks I relaxed
and decided to enjoy the occasion. In particular, I enjoyed just how
dreadful Leicester have become. Martin Corry looks less and less the
powerhouse juggernaut he used to be and more and more a sad git who can
see his future behind him. Varndell proved conclusively that newspaper
editors should never be allowed to pick test squads and Moody, who I
like immensely as a player, is starting to look oddly eccentric and
unreliable.

On the other side of the coin, Hodgson was good. No really. He played
very well indeed. Goode on the other hand was bad. Very bad. The reason
for this apparent disparity between the top two FHs in the universe
(copyright the British Press), was the Sale pack, which was simply
magnificent.

The game itself was everything good about the Guinness Premiership,
which isn't very much, but it was a damn sight better than the S14
final, even allowing for the awful weather of the latter. And I
confess, I enjoyed the contest. The best side won, too, which is a
bonus.

The match was certainly better than the S14 final (alledgedly the top
competition) and the supporters at home saw more rugby in any five
minute spell than they did in the whole of the S14 final.

Hodgson confirmed again that he performs well behind a match winning
pack, his kicking (apart from the charge down!) out of hand was precise
and troubled Leicester defence all afternoon.

Varndell was well marshalled in attack and they certainly tested his
defence, and it was often found wanting. Leicester should have taken
him off after half time and played that other youngster, Lloyd, much
steadier in defence and no mug going forward.

Good and ellis were poor, and the pack did not dominate the scrums as
expected. Lineout was pretty even with plenty being lost due to the
conditions. Sales pack won the loose battle.

Overall Leicester were their own worst enemy, they didn't choose the
right team or tactics for the slippery conditions and they made more
unforced errors than Sale. Sale to took a 16 point lead and Leicester
chased the game allowing sale to stretch their lead further.

Leicester supporters can't relly moan too much, they have never liked
the playoff system, they still beleive it was introduced in response to
Leicesters four year dominance of the ZP. In 2001 when it was
introduced they tried to make the final winners the winners of the
league but backed down. Though in the end Leicester won the league and
playoffs so it made no difference.

Leicester were of course robbed last year but despite that a win
yesterday would have sat uncomfortably with me. Well done sale.

I call on all english ruby fans to boycott the playoffs, only then might
they be abandoned! We have two grand finals already, why do we need a
third?

Watched some highlights - have your boys got slower or was TVNZ
running the reel at 3/4 speed?

Don't the refs pick up off sides and forward passes anymore - if it
wasn't so slow it could have been Super14 ::

I see a trend here. Mind you the other trend I see is that yet
another couple NH teams will gets their collective arses handed to them
on a plate by both Aussi and NZ.

Oh dear crotchpotatoe - I was refering to weather bound TV coverage of

No, for S14 it would have to have been only partially visible and have
only a single try scored ;-}

Had to stop trying to watch the game - what a farce - what happens in
England when it's foggy - I can vaguely remember a game similar?

Have to agree with you about Varndell, SSB came out here for a few jars, and
we both noticed that Varndell, 1) was crap 2) ran away from the contact zone
3) would palm the ball off to someone else if anyone so much as ran near
him. Corry was invisible as captain, no team motivation huddles, etc. Goode
had a mare. I thought prior to the match Leic's would dog it out for a win,
but Howard must be fizzing with the lack of motivation from his players.
The one positive thing to come out of it, at last the league champions won
the RFU end of season fund raiser, that has screwed over Bath, Glaws and
Leicester.

Last time I was at a leicester game as bad as that was pre-league, a low
profile un-telivised freindly so they just played on.
I've never heard or seen of a similar fog bound game in the prem,
perhaps luck or where the grounds are positioned.

I'm afraid that Corry (hate to say it), Kay, Ellis and Rowntree
shouldn't be playing internationally any more. Varndell as has been
mentioned was not in the same league as Cueto, and Smith was invisible.
Hodgson and Barkely have 10 sewn up. Lund looks like a promising 7 -
good engine on him.

Moody has come in for some criticism, but I thought he was immense.
Trying to stop the Sale pack single handedly because your mates don't
look too bothered about it - it's not an easy ask, but christ he tried.

I think Moody is going to be one of the first names on Robinson's
teamsheet until he packs it in.
I think Ellis and Kay still have plenty of games left for England,
Rowntree, as is usual for a prop, goes out quietly.....
Corry may come back for next season, but I think he's going to have to
be better than ever to hold off Sanderson, Moody, Lund, et al.
Be interesting to see if the 'final' GP results have any effect on
transfers now.

He's young and only in his first full season of Premiership rugby. I'm
sure the Leicester coaches are working on his defence, and am sure Mike
Ford will put some time in with him in Oz. Maybe best off starting his
international career as a supersub - didn't do Balshaw and Robinson any
harm starting out that way.

He's been inconsistent for England throughout - flashes of promise but
never looked like being a consistent performer. My money's on Richards
to establish himself in Oz.

I feel sorry for him as well because he's always given his all,
sometimes (2005) holding things together virtually on his own. Can't
see a way back for him though. It's one thing keeping on veterans who
have been world class and can still bring the confidence, nous and
experience to inspire the rest of the team in their fading years.
Corry's problem is that throughout his prime he was second-choice
behind Hill, Dayglo, Back and others so doesn't even bring that aura of
past glories that others might.

Luckily he's unlikely to come across any front rows of much quality
Down Under - expect them to be considerably better than in the autumn
but shouldn't have anything that White can't comfortably deal with.

Bit harsh. He puts in plenty of hard work at the coal face, is a
useful lineout operator and gets about a bit in the loose.

I still think he's the man for the RWC.

I'm looking forward to the front row battle in Australia. It's not
beyond the realms of possibility that the English front row could be
under the cosh from the very team the papers ridiculed such a short time
ago.

The only thing Kay has going for him is experience. In every other
aspect of play there's a number of players well ahead of him - it's one
area English rugby has been churning out good players in for some time now.

I do too: I wasn't clear enough - I think his woes are due to fatigue,
not age or talent.

Quite possibly, but not if they choose to go with Baxter.

Agreed. I thjnk he's outclassed by a fair number too.
