Ospreys and former New Zealand full-back Adrian Cashmore has had to
retire at the age of 32.
He signed a two-year deal in October, but barely featured due to back
trouble and has now been diagnosed with an inoperable cluster of
bulging discs.
Cashmore was unlucky to be competing for a place in his national side
at a time when one of the greatest (IMO) fullbacks of all time was
playing top level rugby.
Personally, I'll be sad to see the guy go, he's been a good servant to
the region and I'd like to wish him luck in whatever the future holds.
I'll leave the penultimate word to him:
"I must think of my future and the risks involved, it is with a heavy
heart that I have decided to return to New Zealand," said Cashmore.
I couldn't have put it better, Adrian.

This is a real shame. Cashmore returned to NZ a few years ago and
played very well, I felt, for the Bay of Plenty NPC side (part of the
team that wrested the Ranfurly Shield from Auckland). Played for the
Chiefs too in 2005 but he was a bit hampered by injury there as well.
You're right in that he was terribly unlucky to be competing against
Christian Cullen (pre-injury). Certainly based on how he played in
2004 he probably had the better of Cullen in terms of positional play,
kicking and tactical savvy - but Cullen was a bit of a freak.
It's a bit of a sad indictment of New Zealand rugby's inability to
compete with the cash being offered by Japan/Europe, though. Had
Cashmore stuck around playing S12 in the late 90s/early 00's he
might've had a good shot at the incumbent FB spot after Cullen was
injured (and fell out of favour with Mitchell/Deans).

What he really meant of course was, thank Christ I'll be able to spend a lot more time down in God's
part of the world: Mount Maunganui.
