Hi Campers!
We have three absolute gems to choose from all at magnificent prices, if
we book this far ahead. Any feedback or opinions are welcome so we can
get things fixed, but I might just take an executive decision ;-)
The target is to book soon in June to get the tee times we want
(important if we want to play the Arden course). After we book we need
to get £35 deposits in, which I know is a massive commitment so far
ahead for us poor folk oop North, not forgetting those also going to
Aldwickbury for the annual Southern wound licking or the St Ives back
slapping!
Anyway, by then we should at least know whether the world has ended on
the 6th of June (6/6/6)!
I have tried to pick courses that have some reputation for being able to
cope with our (un)usual weather at the end of April and have moved the
date to try and help avoid clashing with Easter and usual club golf
activity.
Basing ourselves at an unattached hotel and playing private courses has
also been investigated but the deals are just not there, costs would be
significantly more (about £135 total) and bigger deposits up front :-(
To the details...
_______________
USG NORTH/SOUTH ANNUAL BASH
Dates:
Sunday 29th April 2007 to Monday 30th April 2007
Format:
Sunday (am): 4BBB Sunday (pm)
Monday (pm): 18 hole Stableford Matchplay with prizes for individuals
Numbers:
24 golfers (ideally)
_______________
Venue 1
FOREST OF ARDEN
Player Reports: http://tinyurl.com/zlh5p
Location: M1 side of Birmingham
Easy to get to for everyone, even those in Cornwall, Scotland and
Germany. Which reminds me, did anyone notice Tomi from Finland over the
weekend? I think he was wearing a mask but he certainly swung an axe
like a single figure golfer :-)
Round 1 on the Aylesford, round 2 on the Arden course
Cost pp based on sharing rooms Dinner/B/B:
£109 (including prizes)
Does what it says on the tin. The second course, though shorter still
comes well recommended and would complement the spirit of our group.
Problem with this place is that we need to commit early to reserve tee
on Monday am and I bet the drinks aren't cheap!
________________
Venue 2
WELCOMBE
Player Reports: http://tinyurl.com/eh6nq
Location: Stratford-Upon Avon off M40 near Warwick
Easier to get to from South, whippets will be knackered
Cost pp based on sharing rooms:
£99 (including prizes)
Looks rather plush to me, might consider bringing missus!
________________
Venue 3
STAVERTON PARK
Website: http://tinyurl.com/o2uc
Player Reports: http://tinyurl.com/lm4gn
Location: Near Daventry J16 / J18 from M1
Again, more in Southern climes but easily accessed by all
Cost pp based on sharing rooms:
£94 (including prizes)
This is a bit more of a conference style hotel, plain, clean and
functional. Good course reports though.

If we get inundated with expressions of desire for the FoA and shock at
it's VFM then the decision is easy. Otherwise we can take longer to
decide but will probably have to settle for one of the others which are
still outstanding venues, but hey, just imagine the reaction of your
friends at the beginning of May next year when you tell them where
you've just been...
Is it going to be:
"Wow, What's it like? I bet that was expensive! What did you shoot? Did
you finish with the same ball?"
or:
"Where?"

Dates are fine by me. FoA by preference but will go with the majority if
different.
Do you have quotes for a single room?

Dates are OK for us as far as we can tell from this far out. No really
strong preferences for the venue except to wonder if FOA isn't a bit tough
for some of us? Hick thinks it's great but how about we who are not in that
class? He is currently warming up for the Hickory Championships at Gullane
on Friday. His preparation includes camping - temperatures in Edinburgh were
close to freezing last night! I am off to play in a medal at Kirkby this
morning. Played yesterday - it was freezing cold and very windy. Same is
true today only with the added attraction of heavy showers. I hate winter
golf.....

As I haven't played the Arden I cannot speak with any authority as to
it's difficulty but these things are a 'product' and are presumably set
up to enable all standards of golfer to get round, enjoy and come back.
I also haven't been warned of any handicap limits and I'm sure there
have been many worse players who have knotched the Arden on their bag
than we encounter on this forum.
'From this far out' it may encourage us all to swot up on our course
management skills in trying to differentiate between the possible, the
probable and the realistic on our next shot.
However, though the social side is important on our venture the golf is
supposed to be for enjoyment not torture and now is a good time to voice
concerns of this nature.
If we were to choose FoA, we would be playing The Aylesbury course on
the Sunday which is shorter but just in as good condition apparently.
I'm sure we can make it work for one or even two groups to play that
again on the Monday instead. I'm sure we could fix it with the
management and work out scoring accordingly after all, matchplay is
matchplay.
Good luck to the Hick for his event,
-

Having failed to attend the last two events, I'm not best placed to
have a voice, but I would love to play FoA. Mrs N and the RAF will
need some convincing to allow me to commit well ahead. So at this
stage I'll watch the discussion from the sidelines and hopefully put my
name down for whatever and whenever if I can, in due course.

I also missed out on the last few events but it was great so see and
play with everyone again at Hawkstone this year though I could only make
it for the evening meal and Monday game.
The group is so different to any other group or society I play with in
that eveyone is keen and willing to talk seriously, share opinions and
take feedback about golf, it's rules, ettiquette and general running of
the game. Complemented of course with a smattering of nonsense and
occasional badger watching!
It will be great to see you again, Kev, I'm sure you'll be able to
accrue enough brownie points with both bosses between now and then.

FoA sounds like a good deal, and I'm still hopeful of attending one of these
matches at some stage. The hotel is likely to be somewhat soulless though,
and potentially full of corporate types...
If the eventual decision goes against that I'd love to go back to Staverton
Park, it was the venue for my first ever score of 90..... which required a
birdie three on the last hole. This on a 'morning after the night before'
day.
One other alternative to look at might be
http://www.farthingstone.co.uk/golf_breaks.htm, only one course but a good
one (the last time I was there) and a much more friendly and informal
atmposphere than is likely to be found at FoA or the other two.

Hi,
One concern is the extra cost of a single room (none at H'stone) otherwise I
will go along with the majority.
Note re deposit - I am on holiday for almost all of the first 3 weeks of
June. (Could mean missing deadlines and/or spent up.)

Farthingstone was in the running for a while but didn't quite make it to

I'm sure it won't be soulless around our table, wherever we end up going!

This is a link to the scorecards:
http://www.golfbreaks.com/golf/scorecard.asp?v=54
Arden off the yellows is similar to Hawkstone played off the whites,
about 6450 yards for the men. For the ladies the Arden is 5654 which is
actually less than Hawkstone at 5726.
http://www.golfbreaks.com/golf/scorecard.asp?v=118
There are a few water features on the Arden, but probably not a lot more
than at the Windmill.
I'd be perfectly happy with Forest of Arden, about the only problem I
can see is having to book early, which is likely to rule out some
people. I'd be equally happy to go somewhere else if it meant we could
improve the numbers.

Day two is traditionally the singles strokeplay event for the Williams'
Cup, and I'm not sure how you'd score that if it was played on two
different courses. The matchplay element comes from the comparing the
strokeplay scores (usually Stableford) at the end of the round. Mind you
you're in charge, just bear in mind you need a winner to take over the
following year!

Indeed I share your concerns about having to book early but I'm not sure
if booking late doesn't rule people out because diaries have already
been filled. Similarly, playing a 'name' course is equally likely to
attract more or deter people. You just can't win, as you know yourself.

Don't worry, the European Tour School mangages just fine and I'm sure
we'll be able to pick a winner. In fact I already know who the winner is ;-)
Anyway, are you ruling yourself out or in? At the moment, as Malcolm has
pointed out, there are about seven for North expressing an interest all
ganging up against poor Simon!

I have been quoted that for Forest of Arden, the single room supplement
is £35. The single room supplement for Staverton is £15.
If we are tempted to treat a non-golfing partner or friend along the
non-golfer rates are £82 and £59 respectively.
Hope this helps.

Hi to you too.
Well done on getting so much investigation in, so quickly. I'm sure it
will come as no surprise to hear that my 12 points goes to the Forest
of Arden. (I tuned in accidentally to that damned show, half-way
through the voting and had to hang around to see and hear exactly what
the winning band's performance was like...)
Back to golf.
You would look hard to find a venue that was more central, accessible,
and generally well-received. At the quoted price, it must be
considered a bargain. Your points on course set-up for all levels of
player are well made.
I would advise you to be about 300% sure of the policy on deposits,
refunds, no-shows, etc. I think I had to let a tee-time go at HP last
year some weeks before the event because it was likely to incur a
charge. Room deposits are generally non-refundable, but I think that's
widely understood. Be prepared for a few sleepless nights nearer the
time as attendees develop uncertainties about what had been certainties
:-) I think it is only sensible to be pragmatic about availability and
advance commitments - if we don't want to play at short notice at
Scrubs-by-Sewageworks pay-n-play then we do have to look ahead. (I'm
always slightly bemused by folks who "aren't sure what they're doing 11
months away". I'm playing golf with usg, that's what I'm doing !)
I'll definitely be there.

Demetri,
I agree with Mark.
While some competitors playing a different course would not matter as far
as the Morton Plate is concerned, it would not be satisfactory for the
Williams Cup.
We could have a situation where the results of a volunteer minority playing
the alternate course counted to the Morton Plate were disqualified from the
Williams Cup but then the problem is everyone wants to win the Williams Cup
for the ecstatic pleasure of organising next year's event ;-)

True. I mentioned this to a colleague and he expressed an interest (and
he's played there before).

Definitely in, wherever you finally choose. FoA is my preference. If you
pick FoA I'll tell my colleague and try to get a firmer commitment.

I am very happy to play on the same course as everyone else (wouldn't want
to do other than that, in fact) and I am quite happy to play on any golf
course chosen whateber its degree of difficulty! Just thought I would ask
the question.
As to 'not knowing what we are doing so far ahead' - with the hickory
business, we often do not know so far in advance which dates will have
bookings, hence we take a chance that the dates will be free for us both as
we value our USG weekend highly and support all the efforts all the
organisers over the years with appreciation.

Well said John.
I have booked the date and am prepared to pay the deposit.
If I find later I cannot attend for whatever reason - I will just think of
the money I saved on the Sweepstakes and wine!!
and if I can sell on my deposit so much the better.
I too would like to know the booking conditions.
I can book a room at the FoA by credit card and if it is like the De Vere
Belfry, I would incur no cost if I cancelled anything up to (I think) the
day before.
Golf Societies, when booking at a club, usually give an estimate of
numbers and a deposit based on those numbers which is confirmed nearer the
date.
A club does not usually ask for additional deposits if the numbers are more
and if less, it doesn't matter since the deposit is deduced from the total
bill. Shortly before the date numbers have to be finalised and the society
is then committed to that number. Even then an odd extra one or two can
generally be squeezed in.
Is it possible to book in as a Society for the golf, evening meal, etc, and
then let individuals book their own accommodation, either at FoA or near by?
People can then book that nearer the day without too much risk of
accommodation being a stumbling block to their attending.
Regards,
Malcolm

And perfectly fair, too. It does not look like a "difficult" track,
but one can never be sure until actually playing that.

Your support and your own efforts over the years are also much
appreciated, Janet. We all have our own priorities and juggle
personal, work and social lives in our own ways. Social considerations
are often at the bottom of the pile, but there are times when they can
be considered important enough to take top priority. For me, this is
easier to do the further in advance the proposed event. Other,
normally more important matters, can then fit in around them. I fully
understand that some of the group have work considerations and
conditions that can prevent advance commitment, and my remarks were not
so much aimed at those, as to others who do simply say "I can't commit
in advance". Being able to commit at two weeks notice is of course of
no practical use to an organiser !
Anyway, for those who haven't read it already, this little tale sums
things up nicely (and for some of us, the golf balls represent golf
balls !):-
A professor stood before his Philosophy 101 class and had some items in
front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very
large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf
balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full? They all agreed
that it was.
So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into
the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, or course, rolled into
the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again
if the jar was full. They all agreed it was.
The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of
course, the sand filled up everything else. He then asked once more if
the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous, yes.
The professor then produced two cans of beer from under the desk and
proceeded to pour the entire contents into the jar effectively filling
the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.
"Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, "I want you
to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are for
the important things...your family, your partners, your health, your
children, your friends, your favorite passions....things that if
everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still
be full."
"The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your
house, your car. The sand is everything else...the small stuff."
"If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is
no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for your life.
If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will
never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention
to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your
children."
Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out dancing. Play
another 18 holes. There will always be time to go to work, clean the
house, give a dinner party and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf
balls first...the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The
rest is just sand."
One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the beer
represented. The professor smiled and said, "I'm glad you asked. It
just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem,
there's always room for a couple of beers."

Hi Campers!
We are currently inundated with positive responses for the FoA option
for next year's Bash.
However, players who generally play on the North team seem to have a
paucity of opponents from the South!
It would be great if I could get a clearer idea on intended numbers soon
so I can re-join the rest of society.
On timings, this is how I see it progressing:
Now: finding out who is interested.
End of June: making a booking
Mid to End of August: raking in and sending off deposits
September to April: save up small amounts per week/month and relax over
and above the usual stressful times of birthdays, anniversaries,
Christmas rules quiz and New Year.
April: Collect balances. Panic. Play golf. Win again. Doh!
Come on ye chaps and chapesses, if there are any consideration about
location or dates etc now is the time we can adjust things to try and
encompass more folks in the fun.

Hi
FoA sounds good, but unfortunately £35 for single room supplement is a bit
steep for me, so unless I can twist someone's arm before the end of June,
you may have to count me out. I'll let you know asap.

Hi Campers!
Thanks for the responses so far, according to my reading and
interpretation we have the following making up the happy band.
1 David AMOS N
2 Chris BOOTH N
3 Demetri DOURAMBEIS N
4 John GIBB N
5 John HALLAS N
6 Chris HOMER N
7 Janet HOMER N
8 Ken HOYLE N
9 John LAIRD N
10 Kev NURSE N
11 Dave ROBINSON N
12 Judy DAVIES N
13 Simon IRELAND S
14 Mark MYERS S
15 Crispin ROCHE S
16 Russ TIZARD S
17 Malcolm WADSWORTH S
All have expressed interest in going to the USG 2007 North/South Annual
Bash, at Forest of Arden, Sunday 29th April to Monday 30th April.
(Please let me have corrected name spellings and intended allegiances if
applicable.)
There still seems to be a number of notable South team members who I
hope will be interested in joining in. I think the ideal stopping
point/target is 24 players plus a couple of reserves in case the
proverbial bus comes along but this goal is looking a bit tight at the
moment.
I'm away from my computer from early Wednesday and shall return from
part two of my May tour Monday next having taken in Shiskine (Arran,
http://www.shiskinegolf.com/) and Machrihanish (Kintyre,
http://www.machgolf.com/). I am taking plenty of balls, jumpers and
spare pairs of socks but no computer and no mobile. My desolation will
be accompanied by the flavours of peat, oak, liquorice and fresh sea air.
Hopefully on my return, I shall still have a business to come to and
another half dozen or so more intending campers for our Annual Bash.
Wish you were here!

I am also interested in joining in , but on a non-residential basis as I
live locally .(you might might to keep me in mind as a makeweight or

offer for green fees only do you?
