I'm a 12.4 index right now, have been as low as a 10 when I'm
practicing often...My swing speeds are mid 90's through mid 100's.
Should I be using a certain brand golf ball to give me a little extra
distance? I've never had lessons and have only been playing seriously
for about 4-5 years...
I'm currently using the Titelist DTSolo or the Noodle and I feel like
these balls are decent around the greens and approach shots but might
be causing me to lose some distance...
Thanks!

I'm sitting on 12.2 right now and am pretty content with the HX Tours,
though they do tend to cut pretty easily. Pricey little buggers, but
if you're sub-teens you probably don't lose a lot of balls.
The thing I wonder about is why the manufacturers tout the balls as
longer, longer, longer with no reference to who they're longer for.
For example, the back of a Callaway HX Tour box says that the HX Tour
56 goes farther and another version of the HX goes less distance than
the HX Tour, but there's no mention of swing speed. Is the HX Tour
good for a 100 mph swing while the HX Tour 56 is better for a 110mph
swing and the HX Red is good for a 90 mph swing? And is it all about
driver speed? I sure don't have a 100mph wedge swing speed.
Seems to me something more definitive than "longer!" and "more spin!"
would be useful in their advertising.
IMHO, YMMV, standard disclaimers apply, this is a dramatization--do not
attempt, professional driver on close course, actual results may vary,
prosthetics are not usually dangerous; do not wield hooks around small
children.

I'm currently a 7, trending downward, and at this point it's just a
personal "feel" thing. If one gives me 5 yards or more on the drive, I
really don't care. My bugger is to get the amount of spin on the ball
with short irons and chips that I'm expecting. I think Solos are
hard.. I play ProV1 or Maxfli Revolutions, both of which have very
similar characteristics.

Gee, there's nothing like introducing yourself as a number.
You'll always be #2, to me.

Ditto the Maxfli Revolution Tour. Distance is decent, but the feel and
spin are outstanding. The ProV1 is also nice, but I don't like the feel
of the ProV1x, although it is longer.

if distance is your primary concern, then try a box of top-flite x-outs
from academy, 6 bucks. get the yellow ones if you have a choice.

I am back to the Rev Tour as well...I don't think the ball you play
really matters that much until you get close to the single digits, and
then you have to decide whether you want the ball to (1) magnify your
strengths or (2) mask some of your weaknesses.

I scored my best round ever(73 on a par 72, 71 rating 124 slope) with a Top
Flite 3000 buttery soft or something like that. All I know is that it was
$14 for a box of 15.

You possibly have your reasons for such a statement.
I am a firm believer that there is a difference in how different balls
perform for a golfer.
The catch is that to be able to get the *performing ball* each time - is
the problem.
This isn't to say that a "performer" want perform repeatedly - until
"retired."
Some balls have it, some don't.

Now here is a guy that has found - the ball he likes, and in my opinion,
he should use this ball, when he can.

That ball (the ones left in my bag are the Infinity Buttery Feel) was
one of my recent favorites, but it seems to have disappeared from the
local markets already. So have a couple of newer TF models, like the
Long & Soft - Distance. Instead I see old sub-brands like the XL and
the 3000 series under the Callaway logo. It makes me almost suspect
Callaway is just changing the skins and logos on some TF models and
they're really just the same ball--I wish I knew the new names for some
of those more recent TFs. :-)
