I had my 74th birthday last week and had a very nice day. Late in the
(Texas) afternoon my son called from his (Washington) cell phone on his
way home from work. "Dad, have you checked your email this afternoon?"
"No." "Can you do that while I hang on?" "Sure."
So off I trundle for the computer room, call up my e mail program and,
surprise, surprise, there is a e mail from him.
I was an elaborate certificate which he had created announcing that he
had reserved for the two of us season clubhouse passes for The Players
Championship next year (with on site parking) and was booking us for a
weeklong golf package at either the Sawgrass Marriott or the WGV
Renaissance. I was speechless!
He had talked with his wife and mine and invited them but they both
said, "No, it would be good for you guys to have a week to yourselves."
I'm as excited about the prospect of that as I am of the golf and
tournament. I think the last time I had a week with him pretty much to
ourselves was when we lived in Ashland, Oregon, and I took him up in the
mountains to finish up work on his merit badges for Life Scout. He was
in high school then, he's 48 now.
All I have to do is get myself and my clubs to Jacksonville. I bet that
I can manage that.

That part of the story was my favorite.

<snipped>
That's a fine B-day present, in all respects. :-)

I don't think luck has much to do with something like this.

A "gimme" can best be defined as an agreement between
two golfers neither of whom can putt very well.
