Yeah but wait. The NCAA rules will accuse his teammates and USC of a
violation of the rules for going to Baton Rouge for RF's funeral/memorial
service. The NCAA will claim it is an unfair advantage not offered to other
students. The NCAA needs to wake up to reality and stop f***ing with young
people who have emotional reactions to real life events.

Does prospective agents and marketers letting reggie's family live
rent-free in a 750k house count as young people having emotional
reactions to real life events?

btw, the intersection that Francis was killed at was in a notoriously
shitty (read, "ghetto") part of town. bad idea to be cruising through
there at 3am on friday night.

That's my cue, isn't it?

NCAA Division I Manual, Bylaw 16.6.1.3:
"The institution may pay transportation, housing and meal
expenses...for the student-athlete’s teammates to be present in
situations in which a student-athlete suffers a lifethreatening
injury or illness, or, in the event of a student-athlete’s death, to
provide these expenses in conjunction with funeral arrangements."

so the NCAA has a heart after all.

It's not as cut and dried as the poster has implied. USC is on the semester
system. Final exams for the Spring term ended last week. The
student-athletes are on a break from school just like any other student.
Ryan Francis went home to Baton Rouge for a visit after his last final.
Some of his teammates are scattered all across the country. Some are in Los
Angeles remaining there for Summer school. The NCAA compliance concerns
revolve around questions about whether the teammates must return to L.A. at
their own expense to travel with the team, or can they travel from their
homes or summer vacation locations to Baton Rouge. And after the funeral do
they have to go back to where their trip originated from or can they go
somewhere else at school expense.

If student non-athletes disperse for break and one of them dies
somewhere else, the school doesn't pay for all the friends to go to the
funeral. That is assinine that athletes would get their travel paid.

I'm a Trojan. I think it is inconsistent USC has been given permission from
the NCAA to pay for the funeral, too. The NCAA rules punish
student-athletes and their families (Reggie Bush) for receiving special
treatment while they are alive and then turn around and condone special
treatment for student-athletes and their families (Ryan Francis) if they
die.

The rules above don't seem to make such distinctions, just
that you be teammates. I guess if you've graduated that
would be an exception, but so long as you are a student in
good standing and on a team, it counts. It doesn't say
anything about traveling from where to where or what point
in the school year it is. It just says "provide these expenses
in conjunction with funeral arrangements."

The people receiving special treatment are the living athletes.
I have no more problem with the illness/death travel than I do
with traveling to the games. Some of these kids are on a
scholarship and could no more pay to get to a funeral for a
teammate than they could pay for room and board.

Yes, it is somewhat inconsistent with the other rules, but it
is well defined and serves a logical purpose. I have no problem.

btw, the intersection that Francis was killed at was in a notoriously
shitty (read, "ghetto") part of town. bad idea to be cruising through
there at 3am on friday night.
