Mavs News: San Antonio game 4 [message #1015663] Wed, 17 May 2006 07:57
patricia
Dallas activated Keith Van Horn and placed Darrell Armstrong on IL with a
left knee contusion. Van Horn was available in game 4 for "emergency
situation only" said Avery Johnson before the game. Van Horn did not play
in game 4, but may see action in game 5.

Reports are that Tony Parker aggravated a groin injury during game 4.
Gregg Popovich said that he'll play in game 5 unless they have to amputate
it [with the humor coming from Dirk Nowitzki's comment that he'd play in
game 4 despite his sprained ankle unless they amputated his leg].

Game 4: San Antonio at Dallas (May 15)

San Antonio again changed their starting lineup and Michael Finley started
in place of Robert Horry (and Brent Barry again started in place of Manu
Ginobili). San Antonio had the energy to start and jumped out to an early
6-2 lead with 9 minutes to go. Dallas scored the next 4 points to tie the
game with 7:20 remaining. San Antonio then went on a 10-2 run, including
8 points by an on fire Tony Parker, to go up 16-8 with 4:40 left. A
3-pointer by Jerry Stackhouse ended the run, but Dallas could not get
closer than 5 points the rest of the quarter (and San Antonio could not
build a lead larger than 9 points). DeSagana Diop fouled Robert Horry
with less than a second left in the quarter - Diop's 3rd foul. Horry hit
both free throws to give San Antonio a 26-19 lead after 1 (and Dallas had
to be happy to be down just 7 points with as lackadaisical as they played).
Tony Parker had 16 points and Dirk Nowitzki had 10 points. San Antonio
out-scored Dallas 18-4 in the paint. Neither team scored over the first
110 minutes of the 2nd quarter. 2 free throws by Stackhouse opened the
quarter scoring and pulled Dallas within 5 points. But the Mavs continued
to be unable to get closer than 5 points and a 3-pointer by Barry gave San
Antonio a 34-25 lead with 8:30 left. Tim Duncan converted a 3-point play
to put San Antonio up 43-35 with 4:45 remaining. Dallas then scored the
next 8 points, capped by a 3-pointer by Jason Terry, to tie the game at
43-43 with 3:25 to go. Dallas wasn't able to pull ahead over the end of
the quarter, but an alley-oop out of a timeout from Devin Harris to
Stackhouse tied the game with 25 seconds left and Harris blocked a shot
attempt by Parker. The game was tied 53-53 at the half. Ginobili had 10
points and Stackhouse had 8 points in the quarter. Dallas shot 13-20 FG
as the Mavs out-scored the Spurs 34-27 in the 2nd quarter. Nowitzki hit a
jumper to open the 3rd quarter and give Dallas their first lead of the
game. San Antonio did retake the lead by scoring the next 4 points to go
up 59-55 with 9:50 left. A 3-pointer by Terry tied the game at 62-62 with
8:30 to go, but Parker hit a jumper and Duncan converted a 3-point play to
put the Spurs back up. Stackhouse hit a 3-pointer in the corner, Parker
hit a jumper, and Stackhouse hit another 3 in the corner to pull Dallas
within 68-69 with 6:35 remaining. The teams traded small leads over the
rest of the quarter. San Antonio led 80-77 with 1:10 to go and Dallas
scored the last 7 points of the quarter, capped by a layup by Terry with a
a second left. Dallas led 84-80 after 3. Stackhouse had 11 points and
Duncan had 10 points in the 3rd quarter. Dallas shot 12-19 FG and 4-7 FT
and San Antonio shot 9-15 FG and 9-11 FT in the quarter. After a miss by
the Spurs, Harris drove for the basket and the foul and converted the
extra. Barry got a layup and the teams traded misses. Marquis Daniels
drove for a layup and was fouled and hit the free throw to give Dallas a
90-82 lead with 10:45 to go. But San Antonio struck back quickly as
Ginobili nailed a 3-pointer, Duncan blocked a layup attempt, Ginobili hit
another 3, Dallas missed, and Parker got a reverse layup to tie the game
at 90-90 with 9:20 remaining. After a Dallas timeout, Harris got another
layup, but Duncan scored the next 4 points to complete a 12-2 San Antonio
run and give them a 94-92 lead with 7:50 left. Parker hit a short jumper,
Dallas missed, and Duncan made the quick outlet pass to Finley and he took
the ball in for the one-handed power slam to give San Antonio a 103-98
lead with 4 minutes to go. Nowitzki drove and Duncan was called for a
blocking foul and Barry objected to the call and grabbed the ball under
the Spurs' hoop and took it past half court while shaking his head and ref
Dick Bavetta went over to him and took the ball back and called a delay of
game on the Spurs instead of a technical on Barry, but the result was the
same as the Spurs were called for a delay of game earlier in the game [and
could have been called for more delays as there were a number of times
when they touched the ball after a Spurs' bucket] and the 2nd delay of
game results in a technical. Nowitzki hit all 3 free throws. San Antonio
missed, but Ginobili rebounded, drove and was fouled and he hit 2 free
throws to put San Antonio up 105-101 with 3:20 left. The teams traded
misses. Terry got the ball in the corner and Ginobili flew at him and
Terry dribbled a couple steps in knowing Ginobili was trying to catch him
from behind and Terry stopped and Ginobili ran into him for the foul (both
teams in the penalty) - and it was Ginobili's 6th. Terry hit both free
throws with 2:30 remaining. Parker missed with the clock running out and
Stackhouse hit the short fade-away with the shot clock running out to tie
the game at 105-105 with 1:40 to go. Duncan got the hook shot to go on
the Spurs' next possession. Stackhouse overshot with a minute left.
Duncan spun in and was fouled. He hit 1-2 free throws to give San Antonio
a 108-105 lead with 48 seconds left. Terry drove and was fouled and he
hit both free throws to make it a 1 point deficit with 40 seconds remaining
and San Antonio called timeout. Barry threw a bad inbounds pass that went
off Finley's fingertips and out of bounds. Nowitzki missed the free
throw fade-away and the rebound was batted around and Harris got the
loose ball and passed out to the open Terry and he swished the 18-footer
to give Dallas a 109-108 lead with 23 seconds to go. After a San Antonio
timeout, Duncan drove and passed out to an open Finley who nailed a
3-pointer to give the Spurs the lead back with 15.4 seconds remaining.
After a Dallas timeout, Nowitzki had the ball up top and was trying to
back in and Bowen reached in and had some body contact and was called for
a foul. Nowitzki hit both free throws to tie the game with 8.5 seconds
left. After San Antonio's last timeout, they got the ball into Duncan and
he faced-up Erick Dampier and Dallas did not run a double-team at him
(which would have left a shooter open) so Duncan drove across the lane and
Duncan missed the 10-foot hook shot at the buzzer (and Dampier did a good
job of not letting Duncan get closer to the hoop). Overtime at 111-111.
Dallas missed on 3 attempts and Dampier tapped in the last miss to open
the overtime. Parker missed a reverse layup attempt and Nowitzki got the
ball to Harris and he took it from 3/4 court all the way in for the easy
layup [and was so quick that the TV camera didn't catch it] to give Dallas
a 115-111 lead with 3:50 to go. Dampier collected his 6th foul and Diop
came back in. Diop blocked Duncan's hook attempt, Harris lost the ball
bringing it up, Finley missed a 3-point attempt, and Bowen knocked the
ball away from behind as Harris was bringing the ball up court. Duncan
got a bucket up close to pull San Antonio within 113-115 with 2:55 left.
Terry missed a long jumper. Terry knocked the ball out of Barry's hands
and Terry took it on the break, missed the dunk attempt, but Stackhouse
was there to clean up and get the over the head layup with 2:10 remaining.
Duncan found a wide open Bowen almost in the corner (his favorite spot)
and he nailed the 3-pointer to pull San Antonio within 116-117 with 2
minutes to go. Terry drove to the baseline and turned in and then pulled
up and nailed the 14-foot fade away. Duncan missed inside with 1:30 left.
Nowitzki found a slashing Harris and he got the layup to give Dallas a
121-116 lead with 1:10 remaining. Finley drove and was fouled by Diop -
his 6th (and Dallas went without a true center the rest of the way).
Finley hit both free throws with a minute to go. Duncan got switched on
to Terry in the corner and Terry looked to drive and then pulled back and
then nailed the long rainbow over Duncan with the shot clock running out
to give Dallas a 5 point lead with 38 seconds left. San Antonio called
timeout. Parker was fouled driving, but he missed both free throws with
32.4 seconds remaining. Dallas was able to waste 6 seconds off the clock
before the Spurs committed the intentional foul - but it was their foul to
give. Dallas inbounded the ball to Nowitzki and Bowen crazily didn't foul
him [yeah, Bowen had 5 fouls, but they needed to foul to stop the clock]
and then Dallas played keep-away and then the Spurs still didn't commit
the intentional foul and Stackhouse missed with the shoot clock running
out and there was just 8 seconds left and Finley brought the ball up and
missed the forced 3-point attempt and the rebound was batted twice and
time ran out. Dallas won 123-118 in overtime. Dallas leads the series
3-1.

WOW!!! What an absolutely incredible game! One of the best games in Mavs
playoff history - and it would still have been an excellent game even if
Dallas had lost. But Dallas won, so that made it 10 times better. Heck,
I didn't even mind the game ending after midnight and not getting home
until after 1 am. Heck, I kept having to pause and raise my hands with a
"YES" while I typed this and replayed the last 8 minutes of the game on
video. It was just really a great game. The largest lead in the last 15
minutes of the game by either team was just 5 points. Yeah, Dallas didn't
play well early and San Antonio had a lapse at the end of the 2nd quarter
when Dallas got back in it, but the rest of the game was just incredibly
tight and intense. As would be expected in a close overtime game, the
numbers were fairly close. Dallas shot 50% (45-90) FG including 5-12
3-pointers and San Antonio shot 53.2% (42-79) FG including 8-14
3-pointers. Dallas shot 28-32 FT and San Antonio shot 26-32 FT. Dallas
had a slight edge in out-rebounding San Antonio 39-37 including 13-7
offensive, but dominated the boards in overtime in out-rebounding the
Spurs 11-2 including 4-0 offensive. The assist numbers were actually good
in the 1st half for both teams (16 for Dallas, 10 for San Antonio), but
went back to form for this series in the 2nd half and overtime (2 for
Dallas, 6 for San Antonio). Game 5 is Wednesday in San Antonio and it's a
must win for the Spurs. They also have a huge hill to climb as only 8
times in NBA history has a team overcome an 1-3 deficit in a series.

There wasn't one hero in this game, it was a complete team effort. Jason
Terry was great in this game with his clutch shots. 14 of his game high
32 points came in the 4th quarter and overtime. He also had 5 assists in
his 51 minutes. Devin Harris again played well (and we'll look past his 2
dumb turnovers in overtime) and had 18 points including 7-10 FG, 6
rebounds, and 6 assists as the Spurs continued to have trouble stopping
him when he attacked the basket. Jerry Stackhouse continued to score in
this series and he had 26 points including 3-3 3-pointers off of the
bench. I did get annoyed at points in the game where the Mavs went away
from the hot Dirk Nowitzki - he was 6-7 FG at one point, including some
tough shots. He would get a mismatch on a switch and then they would
swing the ball away from him, especially in the first 3 quarters. He
didn't attempt a shot (without being fouled) in the 4th quarter and
overtime. He had an efficient game with 28 points on 7-12 FG and 14-15
FT, despite playing with a sprained ankle. He also had 9 rebounds and 6
assists, but turned the ball over 6 times. Josh Howard again did not have
a great game as the Spurs tried to take him out of the game, but he did
have a hand in batting some of the loose offensive rebounds out late in
the game. Howard had 8 points on 4-13 FG and 5 rebounds in 31 minutes.
DeSagana Diop only attempted 1 shot, but had 4 rebounds including 3
offensive and 3 blocks and fouled out in 13 minutes. Erick Dampier had 6
points and 9 rebounds including 6 offensive before fouling out in 36
minutes. He had a great dunk off a nice feed from Nowitzki midway
through the 2nd quarter. Marquis Daniels was the only other Mav who
played. He had 3 points on a 3-point play and missed his other 3
attempts in 8 1/2 minutes.

Tony Parker was great for most of the game, but only had 6 points in the
4th quarter and overtime. He had a game high 33 points including 9-14 FT.
Tim Duncan continued his stellar performance in this series and had 31
points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 blocks in 47 minutes. Manu Ginobili
had 26 points including 8-11 FG and 4-4 3-pointers before fouling out late
in regulation. He also had 4 steals. Michael Finley played really well
in trying to beat his former team. He had a couple of shots that looked
like daggers, but the Mavs were able to overcome them. Fin had 14 points
and 6 rebounds in 47 minutes. Bruce Bowen continued his role as defender,
but I still have to question his not committing the intentional foul near
the end of overtime. He had 5 points and 4 rebounds in 44 minutes. The
goat of the game has to be Brent Barry with his bad inbounds pass with 38
seconds left in regulation and dumb over-reaction with 3:45 left in the
4th that resulted in a technical foul - giving up 1 point makes a
difference in a game that is tied after 48 minutes. Barry had 5 points
and 7 rebounds in 38 minutes. Robert Horry played just 9 minutes and had
2 free throws and 2 fouls for his only stats. Nick Van Exel collected 5
fouls in his 7 1/2 minutes on the court. Gregg Popovich continued to go
small as his centers played a grand total of 1 second (Rasho Nesterovic)
and Fabricio Oberto didn't play in this game.

Quotes [Johnson's, Nowitzki's, first from Terry, Popovich's, and Duncan's
quotes transcribed by me]
Avery Johnson: "I am really excited for our basketball team. I told you
guys after the last game that I thought we were making some progress in
the area of mental toughness. You got to have it against this basketball
team that you're playing against because they got a lot of pride and they
won 3 championships and obviously I've been a part of one of those. But
not many people are left from that team except Duncan. So a lot of pride
over there. Told you guys before the game it's a heavy weight fight, slug
fest. And, boy, each team was throwing punches. And fortunately we had a
little bit more in the tank in overtime. We had so many key contributions
tonight. And before I start talking about some of the other guys, you
know, Dirk basically wasn't a 100% tonight and, you know, he drew
double-teams, he kicked it out to his teammates, he drew a lot of
attention, and that's what MVPs are all about; when guys are having an MVP
type season like he is. But what about Jason Terry and some of the clutch
shots he made was just awesome, with his patented moves. Stackhouse gave
us a big lift. Devin came alive for us in the 2nd half, that was big for
us. But again, we had no answer for Duncan. We haven't had an answer for
him pretty much the whole series. But I tell you what, our big guys are
battling. Damp and DeSagana got some big stops for us at the end of the
game. So we'll keep working. Series is long from over. But again, our
team, we're standing strong, we're not backing down. Because we know
we're in a really, really tough series here."

Johnson: "Again, you try all the different things. Everybody is sitting
on your plays, so your plays don't work as good, you kind of know what's
coming. If a guy is in the wrong spot, you can tell him, 'Hey, man,
you're in the wrong spot.' You know each other's playbook. So
everybody's sitting on each other's stuff. You know, there are different
waves in the game. I've been involved in this game since 88 and I've seen
a whole lot of basketball games and been a part of a lot of them and big
games like this. So comes in waves and I think that the team that just
can stay really tough and sharp and get a few breaks - obviously, man,
you know, if Tim makes that shot at the end of regulation then we're all
disappointed. So you know, we got a couple of breaks and we don't care
how we got them. We just want to try to have 1 point more than our
opponent at the end of the game and go from there."

Johnson on transition defense: "I thought it was just okay. We didn't
score much on the break. We didn't get that going until overtime when
Devin kind of kicked it in gear. But again, for a guy who's probably
playing in, what, his 8th game since his injury, he's not that bad. Had a
little turnover or 2 at the end. But again, it's a work in progress. But
he really did some nice things to give us a big spark."

Johnson: "Well, they're sure trying to please me. You know, again, and
it's something that we talk about. And like I told Devin early in the
game when Parker had 18 points and he didn't have any and I told him,
'Now we can really see what you're made of.' Because I've been in
situations like that where I came out and the guy torched me early in the
game. But can you come back? You know, what are we going to remember at
the end of the game? So I've been in situations like that and that's what
I told him. So he showed me something tonight because Parker was really
on fire early. He was getting by us. He had 18, 20 points seemed like in
the 1st quarter. And I told Devin, 'I'm really going to see what you're
going to do the rest of this game.' So he came back strong, that's what I
like."

Johnson: "We're digging deeper and deeper. And that's what happens. See
when you say you want to win a championship, you can't hide now, all
right. And now everybody's watching. There's only, what, 2 games on
every night now. And then in the next round, there is only going to be 1
game on a night. At first there was 4 games on a night. So everybody's
watching you now. But again, we're playing against a tough, tough-minded
basketball team. Ginobili was giving us fits tonight - we're glad he
fouled out. And but again, our team, we're trying to make some strides in
some areas. And I'm kind of glad that we were fortunate enough to get by
that 1st round, and I kind of reminded them of that, hey, you should have
tons of energy; you know, they had a couple of more games than we did."

Dirk Nowitzki on Terry: "He was great, especially down the stretch. He
was aggressive. He got to the line some in the stretch in the 4th
quarter. He made some big shots in overtime. I've said it since he
joined us last year, he's been doing so much things down the stretch and
in crunch time, he's one of the best clutch players that I've ever played
with. He just doesn't care what time it is on the clock and he makes
those shots. It was great. I mean, we just ran plays for him. He came
off the screen and just made big shots. So he was big. But I think
everybody really had a great game today. I thought Stack was great.
Devin was good again. So it was a great team effort."

Nowitzki on the fans following his instructions to boo Finley: "Obviously
when I said to boo Michael, I was actually joking. I didn't know the fans
were actually going to do it. You know, he had a great career obviously
here in Dallas. He's still a great friend of mine. What he did for this
franchise when he first got here, he completely turned it around and
obviously he left his heart out here for this franchise. So but saying
all that, it's the playoffs. And you just can't root for a Spurs guy,
that's just how it is."

Nowitzki on Finley's technical: "In the heat of the game, I thought he
pushed me a little bit. I don't really know. I don't really go through
every play afterwards. It just happened and we move on."

Nowitzki on his ankle: "Well I didn't think so. I felt great early on.
And was actually a little worried because it was still swollen this
morning, but it loosened up great before the game and I actually started
off pretty well. I made my first couple of shots and I felt good. So
from that point on, I knew it was going to be all right and obviously it
felt great. Tonight it's going to be obviously to it. I don't want it to
swell up even more. So we'll see how it responds and go from there."

Josh Howard: "Our guys are hungry. Every guy in this locker room wants
this bad. And it shows."

Howard on Nowitzki: "That's Dirk. That's our superstar. He's going to do
whatever to help us win."

Jason Terry: "Well I just thought going in, we knew what kind of defense
they'd be playing on Dirk. [Nowitzki moves the microphone closer to
Terry] Appreciate it buddy. You know, my guy is a decoy and he's giving
assists even when he's not literally passing to us. Especially in this
series. I know it's been so tough for him because they've been double-
and triple-teaming him at times. But like you said, the play of Devin,
Stack, JHo; it has freed a lot of other guys up and when you're playing
4-on-5 or 5-on-4 out there a lot of times, it's a lot easier to get to the
basket and score and create."

Terry: "We were having trouble getting stops but we got one when it
counted at the end of regulation. We got into overtime and we pushed it
and pushed it. It was a good all-around performance, but we can play a
whole lot better. That's the scary part. We learned a lot from last
year's playoff experience. This is the moment we've been waiting for. If
we execute offensively and defensively, there's nothing that can stop us."

Jerry Stackhouse: "They came out and tried to hit us with a haymaker at
the beginning of the game and we withstood that and just continued to
fight. They're showing why they are the World Champions. They just keep
coming and keep coming and fortunately for us we're able to combat our
hunger with their experience, and it's working out for us."

Stackhouse: "All these games are coming down to the same thing, everybody
makes run throughout the course of the game and it's nip and tuck at the
end of the game. Fin made a couple of big plays to get them back on top
and we made play downs the stretch and were fortunate to get it into
overtime. From there in overtime we just tried to take advantage and put
some pressure on them by running and got a couple easy baskets. We just
stuck together and JT made some huge shots for us in the end. This is the
best win I've ever been apart of."

Stackhouse: "We had everyone going so they really couldn't cheat off
anyone. Our guys were able to get open off the pick-and-roll and get open
shots. We were relentless all night. I'm proud of these guys. I'm proud
to be a part of this group and guys just kept fighting, kept working and
we stayed the course. Our ultimate goal is to bring a championship to
Dallas and that's what we are trying to do."

Stackhouse on the break before overtime started: "We were staring at Avery
looking at the board, looking for a special play. There was nothing was
on the board but 'Run, run, run.'"

Gregg Popovich: "It was another great, competitive game and we came up
short. I don't think, the bottom line is somethings you can't control.
And that's frustrating. But the bottom line is we could have come out of
here with 2 wins. Both games the same down the stretch. Being up and all
we need is a rebound at the end of the game and game is over. And tonight
Josh got the rebound and the other night Dirk got the rebound. And those
would have been 2 wins for us. So they get credit for going for the
offensive boards; we get no credit for blocking out, I guess. But that's
very frustrating, to have the opportunity to win both times here against
a very good team."

Popovich on transition defense: "We'll try to do better."

Popovich on Parker: "I thought he came back. He was very competitive,
very aggressive offensively. Looked for his shot, looked for
opportunities. And we really needed that. We talked to him about that
before the game. I thought he did a great job."

Popovich on Dallas' rebounding: "They're a very athletic team. They're
long and they've just done a great job on the board."

Popovich on Harris' drives: "He's a good player. It's a good basketball
team. You know, everyone's going to score. You're not going to stop
people all the time or the score would be 14 to 12. People are going to
get open, people are going to score. I mean, it's not like we score 40
and they scored 120, both teams scored and both teams had players who got
open and did things. And that's what it's all about. But it comes down
to a lot of other things and at the end of the game, rebounding is
usually one of the biggest."

Popovich on small ball and rebounding: "At times it doesn't, but they're
pretty small too. you know, when it hurts us is when Damp and Dirk are
both out there and we go small, then we're going to be at a little
disadvantage. But he's a great player, that's what makes him great. He's
tough to cover with the bigs and we can cover him a little bit better with
our smalls. He's the guy that creates all our problems because he's such
a great player."

Popovich: "I thought that Michael Finley was great. You know, he's been
so coachable all year, as everybody knows, he's a class act. And it was
great to see him come out and play well. It just amazes me that he gets
booed here in Dallas. I mean, I think anybody that boos him has got to
be, I don't know what they use in their noggin. As classy as he was for
so long to be here and come back and get booed is just incomprehensible to
me."

Popovich on Van Exel: "Nick hardly played any minutes at all."

Popovich on game 5: "They know what they've done well and they know what
they've done poorly. They know the position they're in. And they'll come
back on Wednesday and they'll have to play very well again to have an
opportunity to win. We're playing a heck of a team. So give them credit.
They've had a great year and they're playing great in the playoffs. But
it's not like we're playing horribly and they're playing great. We're
right there and it hasn't worked out. So we'll keep on pushing and see if
we can break through on Wednesday."

Popovich on the high scores and defense: "I don't have an answer to that.
But one would have thought that this series would be in the 80s and 90s
possibly. But we're both playing pretty small teams, as the gentleman
mentioned here. With the way the rules are in the league, you're attack
and kick and getting to the rim, creates a lot of offensive. It creates
a lot more possessions with small lineups and I think that's probably a
big part of it. It's tough to guard."

Popovich on adjustments: "During the game, we've each done things to try
to take advantage of whatever's going on on the court. But there's not a
whole lot more left. It's just basketball. It's not all that
complicated."

Tim Duncan on the last 2 games: "Yeah, 1 play either way, 1 call either
way. What ever it may be, it came down to that."

Duncan on if they were disappointed on their free throw shooting down the
stretch: "No."

[PR guy: "Any more questions?" No pause while Duncan gets up and leaves.]

Bruce Bowen: "It's not a situation where we're getting blown out and
getting our hats handed to us. It's the small things. If we do the small
things we're going to be successful. ... We're right there. I feel like
we're on the cusp of doing great things."

Bowen referring to the officiating: "I've been in the league 11 years and
I've seen a lot of late game heroics. Michael Jordan hitting that shot
against Cleveland. You expect that because that's how you determine
games. At least that's what I thought.

Robert Horry: "Everyone on that team is playing great. You can't point to
one player that ain't."

Horry: "We have to keep pushing. The good thing is we're going home."

Michael Finley: "We're still breathing. We have the opportunity to go
back to San Antonio. I hope we're fortunate enough to make the trip back
here."

Finley on if he talked with Nowitzki during the game: "Not as much as the
refs were talking to him tonight. I was just wondering what his
relationship was with the referees because they seemed to have an ongoing

league says a free throw that helped the mavs tie the game in regulation
should not have been shot. i could not find a second source for this story.

Harm, but no foul

Fresh from the Too Little, Too Late Dept. comes word that the NBA
rescinded the technical foul against San Antonio's Michael Finley in the
second quarter of Game 4 in Dallas. Finley was called for a technical
with 4:44 remaining in the half, and it appeared to be borderline at
best. ``You can imagine what I wanted to say when I heard that," said
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, who found out about the decision Thursday.
``Does that mean we win the game by 1 point?" Game 4, which was played
May 15, went into overtime, and the Mavericks prevailed, 123-118, so the
technical was huge. (Dirk Nowitzki made the free throw.) For Finley, it
means he won't have to fork over $1,000 to the league. For the Spurs, it
means yet another tough break in a series they just as easily could have
won.

I'm sure that was the only missed call the WHOLE game...

The league instead decided to assess a technical foul on Dave for
inappropriate posting by including all 512 lines of a previous post
instead of trimming items not relevant to his followup post. :)

When a Spurs fan notes a single change to a call in a game that went to OT,
it sounds like a Duncan-esque bleat, whether you mean it to or not.

how could something so significant to such a close series not be noted?

as for what's duncanesque, what's cubanesque, and what's
avery-johnsonesque, each person is entitled to their own opinion.

As for my opinion...it was a good series, and I thoroughly
enjoyed watching San Antonio lose it. ;-)

See... this is what it all comes back to. The league doesn't go re-referee
entire games, they won't retroactively call a turnover on the Spurs, or
admit Duncan's swim move is a CLEAR foul and take Spurs points off the
board, or do anything else like that. They DO, however, examine all
flagrants and technicals because those fouls affect disciplinary measures.

So when they look and say Finley shouldn't have gotten a technical... it's
grist for the excuse mill. Oh gee, put a little asterisk next to that series
because of that one bad call, like it was the only one made...

Cuban is a whining assbag, you won't hear me defend his incessant bleating
and cantankerous pissing and moaning. AJ, however, hasn't done anything
worthy of note as far as fouls go...

aj didn't do anything except for complaining about almost every call
during every game and mentioning unfair officiating after games 1, 5,
and 6. other than that, he didn't say a word.

Good.

Then maybe it's time to stop complaining about the officiating
and/or coaching and just move along. ;)

who's complaining? just stating the facts and pointing out that they
are interesting! is somebody getting uncomfortable with the
conversations around here? :-)

Officiating has been questionable the entire playoffs, but I believe
the best team did indeed win the series and hopefully will win this one
against the Suns. I like the suns, but I would prefer to see the Mavs
win it all.
