Boxing: Donaire Headlines ShoBox
By Brian Wilbur - May 4, 2006
Friday, May 5th, Showtime will televise a two fight card from the Lucky
Star Casino in Concho, Oklahoma on their ShoBox series. ShoBox is a
critically acclaimed series whose mission statement is to find the best
young prospects in boxing and put them into difficult fights so fans can
see what they are really made of. This approach is refreshing because of
the way promoters baby their prospects nowadays. In this week's main
event, Glenn Donaire, (15-2-1 9 KO's), will square off against Cesar
Lopez, (18-2 4 KO's). The second fight of the evening features Alexis
Divison, (16-3 12 KO's), against the 25 year old undefeated Juan Manuel
Buendia, (12-0 7 KO's). The televised portion of this fight card is
scheduled to kick off 11pm ET/PT on Showtime.
"The Filipino Flash" Nonito Donaire, a touted prospect with blinding
handspeed, was originally supposed to make his second appearance on
Showtime's airwaves. When he was forced to pull out, Showtime chose
another Donaire, Nonito's older brother Glenn, to fill the vacancy. Much
like Bobby Pacquaio to brother Manny, these Filipino boxing brothers
feature a dazzling younger brother that overshadows the eldest. Nonito
looks like he has the potential to be a future star in the sport. Glenn
could become a solid contender if all goes well. We will find out soon
if all will go well for the 26 year old Glenn Donaire, who hails from
San Leandro, California. He will be matched tough on Friday, as is the
case with all ShoBox participants. Cesar Lopez is a durable opponent who
will test Donaire to his limits. Glenn has already faltered when his
level of opposition is stepped up so this match will test where Donaire
is at in his development.
Out of the four boxers in action on Friday, the one with the most upside
is Juan Manuel Buendia. The junior middleweight slugger is being moved
along at a steady pace and is facing the most dangerous opponent that he
has faced in his young career. That opponent is the 28 year old
Dominican Alexis Divison. Last time boxing fans saw Divison he was
disqualified against Delvin Rodriguez on Friday Night Fights for
repeated fouls. Alexis has recorded all of his wins in the Dominican
Republic against very soft opposition and is 0-2 in the United States.
Going up against a young, hungry, and undefeated prospect like Buendia,
Divison's chances of breaking through and getting a win in the States is
slim. However, when you are dealing with young fighters who are largely
unproven, anything can happen.
