Pardon the off topic subject ,but it is actually very related to pool as I
am trying to maximize the quality of my sleep so that I can play better
pool. :-)
Does anyone in this newsgroup sleep on this mattress and is it the best
mattress you have ever owned? I am replacing my mattress and would love to
get some feedback from those that bought one.
Thanks,
JoeyA

I haven't tried one but this link might be of interest.

Seems like a less pricey substitute for the same bed.

I have a very bad back and tried almost all the mattresses out there. I
choose an air mattress. Just try a cheap one for a while and see. You
can make it as firm or as soft as you like. I covered mine with one of
those memory foam thingies which helped a lot.

I slept on one for a week and coudn't stand it. There were two problems
i didnt like. First You kind of sink in. This is supposed to be a good
thing as it contours to your body but i felt like i was sleeping on a
whole everytime o rolled over i felt like i was going uphill. Granted i
toss and turn so perhaps this was in part my problem. The second
problem was it was hot. For some reason the bed really retained heat.
This was in the middle of winter.
Just my two cents,
Mark <---back to lurking.

Joey,
First, the Oak Alley Plantation B&B in Vacherie
(http://www.oakalleyplantation.com/) uses these in their guest
rooms/cottages. Might be worth the price of a night or two to test one out.
Second, you might want to try a "Sleep Number" bed, also. Most Radissons,
and specifically the Radisson at New Orleans International, has these in at
least some of the rooms. I don't think you get Lindsay Wagner's services,
too, but it might be worth asking.... maybe they're running a special or
something....
Third, I strongly suggest trying Jim W's suggestion of using an air mattress
with a memory foam pad on it. I do think quality matters a bit with these,
but even a queen-size Coleman only runs about $100, has a built-in air pump,
and controls at the head end of the bed so you can add/remove air while
you're lying in it. Easy adjustability is more important than you might
think at first, as the firmness varies with the number of people on the
mattress.

Thanks for all of the suggestions everyone. I appreciate it.
Jim, you are DA MAN. How did you know Oak Alley Plantation had them? And
what about the Sleep Number beds? You gave some excellent advice.

This was my concern too. We bought a mattress about 5 months ago. I too
have a very bad back as well as a bad hip. Next week, I'll no longer have a
bad hip. Anywho, I liked the tempurpedic when I tried it in the store. My
wife hated it (had trouble getting out of it). Needless to say, we didn't
get one. The one concern that I had with respect to me, was the heat issue.
I recognized that you're basically wrapping yourself in insulation and I
have a very warm body as it is. Glad to see that my wife was right :-)
We ended up with a Simmons Beautyrest Exceptionale. Remarkable difference
from the firm King Koil that we got rid of.

Joey - I'm looking into the same thing myself right now! I found two
possibilities:
1. This is a foam mattress that is supposed to be cooler than Tempurpedic:
http://www.healco.com/mattresses.html
2. This is an air mattress that looks interesting. I'm going to try one
out in the store when I get a chance:
http://www.satbed.com/
Also look at www.epinions.com to get a lot of reviews from people who tried
Tempurpedic, and the other bed.

I have a "memory foam" topper for my futon mattress and it's great. I
think the full memory foam mattresses would be that much better.
Everyone who has slept on mine has commented on how nice it is.

Dan, I have had TWO different "pool players" tell me that the Simmons
Exceptionale is the real deal. One said the World Class Exceptionale and
the other said the standard Exceptionale. I am going to have to find a
Simmons dealer and test out those two mattresses. I wonder if John (from
the Google post) has any feminine testers who would like to ......oh, I'm
sorry I can't go there, me being a married man and all.
Seriously, one guy swears by the World Class Exceptionale and now the Mayor
of RSB weighs in.....I am almost sold without a test. I too, can't stand
any additional heat. I am one hot-blooded guy. ;-)
Let me know where this thread leads you and I will try to do the same.
Thanks!

couple of additional points/clarifications. The jury is still out with
respect to heat retention. The exceptionale has some memory foam in the
top. So far, it's been good. Summertime will tell.
Also, it's not the be-all end-all. I still toss and turn all night, cannot
sleep on my back or my stomach, so I switch from side to side. The big
difference is the frequency. Before, I could go an hour on a side at the
beginning of the night. Then tossed with increasing frequency until by
morning, I looked like one of those Popeil rotisseries. I am sleeping very
well now, although still tossing somewhat. Exercise has helped too I'm
sure.

Mr. Mayor, I think the bed is giving you a good spot but with your physical
infirmities it could just be some bed sores. It's kind of like me playing
Jose Parica with a spot. I just hope to get lucky, have a good match and be
able to walk tomorrow.
There was a company or business here in New Orleans at one time, where you
could climb inside of this device that as I recall looked kind of like a
coffin and inside your body would "float" maybe in a liquid gel, air or
something else and the container was soundproof but you could breathe
normally. I never actually saw one but read about it once and I wish I
could read up on it again. Every now and then I could use a world where I
could get away from the bumps and bruises for a few minutes. Maybe FEMA or
the Stafford Act could send me one. * really wish I could find out what
that device was. It was at least several years ago that I read about it.
JoeyA (may you rest well, your honor.)

The Simmons family will be pleased. I've always liked them, but not for the
traditional reasons. The family used to own a huge stone house on the
eastern tip of Fishers Island, New York. The guest house, also of stone,
was a formidable edifice in and of itself. My buddy and I used to motor by
to one of our diving spots and I dreamed of what it would be like to live
there. I remember that about 30 years ago it went on the market for
550,000. I joked that if I had a half mill, I'd take out a loan for the
other 50 K and buy it. I'm sure that this propery is probably worth ten to
twenty times that now.

Sure. I have a weird thing going on. I usually wake up with a bit of a
sore back, and it is bad enough to get me out of bed on a Sunday morning
when I'd rather be sleeping in more. After I get up, within 15 minutes,
there's no back pain at all. This has been going on for a long time and I
didn't think much of it. For the last 4 nights, though, the pain is much
worse, to where I wake up at 4 am and have to take advil for back spasms.
Again, when I get up, most of the pain goes away pretty quickly. This is
what is making me research a new bed very quickly. I'm considering a trip
to the doctor, too, but I think it is just the mattress catching up with me.
:(
I'll check out the ones you mentioned above, but I don't think I'll buy ANY
mattress that doesn't offer a free trial period. Beds are such an
individual thing.
Oh, you might consider that an air bed would be likely to float, if that
matters to you. ;) (Hope you take that the right way!)
thanks,

You really should check out epinions.com. There are quite a few negative
reviews there from people who have owned the Simmons for more than a year.
It seems difficult to find the perfect mattress.

You are right on the money. Thanks Ron. This newsgroup is the greatest.

Now for the next question: Has anyone "floated" in a sensory deprivation

A float in the the tank could be an interesting, relaxing trip
for an adventurous person but an unpleasant experience for
one who wished or needed to remain in control.
It was not commercially successful, but behavioral scientists
still research the subject. The movie "Altered States" was
an exciting fictional dramatization of the research gone bad.
Sensory deprivation has long been a tool of interrogators to
soften up a subject.
Sensory deprivation has been used to explain the phenomenon
of motorists stopping and freezing up on the Mackinac Bridge.
After miles of driving on the bridge with no visual references to
stimulate the field of view, the brain loses its bearings.
This may explain why alien invaders never appear in busy cities;
instead, people see them at night in sparsely populated areas.

Joey, this is an area - somewhat like acupuncture - that's so fuzzy that
other people's opinions aren't worth a whole lot. Some people love the
things, others find them an utter scam. These days the builders more
commonly call them "flotation tanks". The Samadhi Company founded by John
Lilly still exists, and there are some other makers. A web search for
"flotation tanks" should turn them up, and a search for "flotation centers"
should turn up commercial places that rent their use by the hour. Home model
tanks aren't cheap to buy, starting around $6K. Mostly what they are is a
sound and light tight fiberglass container with about a foot of water in it
that's had several hundred pounds of Epsom salts dissolved in it - couldn't
sink if you had to - and a heater to keep it at 94 degrees F (or so - skin
temperature).

John,
I read up on it and now I remember a bit more than I did yesterday. I
thought I remembered that there was a commercial operation in New Orleans
but it isn't listed any longer. There are many commercial operations around
the country but none in Louisiana or Mississippi. I will have tocheck
Mobile and Pensacola which are close enough to visit and try them out.
Thanks,

Now that's the kind of info I like getting back. Here in New Orleans, we
call that lagniappe-something extra or something not expected. I like the
final statement about why alien invaders never appear in busy cities.
One of the web sites I visited refuted claims that this is a sensory
deprivation chamber. Maybe they had good reason to but I would think the
float tanks are similar to meditation and could be very helpful to some
people.
Has anyone actually climbed into one? Do you know anyone close to you that
has used one more than once?

Jerry, that is awesome. In my research I had come to find out that most of
the mattresses were the same mattresses but with different names at
different stores. It was confusing but now I understand.

Hell, put it inside. After 8 hours of deprivation, an alarm going off

I like the article that started off with the author telling you that he
hated all mattress salesmen. That made me laugh because I haven'teven put
myselfin front of one and I already dislike the thought of talking to them.
I think I am just going to lay down on a mattress and if it feels good to me
I'm going to buy just the mattress. Why buy the boxsprings when I already
have a set even if they are 20 years old?
I like trying new things and would love to try resting in a float tank. I
am thinking that it might help my pool game and you know how I am when it
comes to trying anything that will help my pool game. :-)
