You could tell from the poor use of English that it wasn't a
native English speaker.

A lot is made of the 1966 WC victory, but the truth is that the
Nation's expectations really weren't that high in 1966. Unlike every
bloody one since when they have proven to be TOO high. Except this
year of course ;-)

Not that I know anything about Soccer, but reading about 1966 I found this:
"the teams of this 1966 tournament failed to produce the excitement and
skills of what some of the past great teams like the Hungarians in 1954 and
Brazil of 1958 and 1962 had. England were the best team of a rather poor
selection of entrants. "
Ironic.

In what sense?
It was certainly easier to get tickets - I went with the rest of
the school football team to watch an apalling game between two South
American teams the names of whom have disappeared from memory. It was
a terrible game - both needed a draw to qualify for the next round IIRC
and it was not a game to inspire kids to greater things. This time,
I've got two tickets thus far and, apart from members of the national
supporters club, I don't personally know anyone who was lucky enough to
get any tickets in the lottery.
Cheers

Especially as the same source had this
"The Rugby World Cup is the biggest rugby trophy in world rugby as it is
open to all rugby playing nations. The holders, NZ, have been the
winners every time since its conception in 1991. Although NZ have only
actually lifted the trophy once (when they were professional and the
other teams were amateur), they have spectacularly failed to lose a
single RWC game since then thus maintaining their "unbeaten"
record. Given their superiority it is nice how they have "given"
the wins to other teams : the true spirit of Internatinal Rugby. The
nature of giving wins varies : sometimes they dont turn up, sometimes
they stick to plan A with no visible plan B, and sometimes they think
they're French - regardless of the method, the true generosity of their
actions make them a much loved and respected Nation whose hold on the
Webb-Ellis trophy seems sure to continue for many many more seasons of
remaining unbeaten" aut:boyd.subj:unbeaten.cref:oneeyed.

It's the same as: "no matter how poor people think they are, if we
don't beat them I have my excuse and if we do then we've beaten a great
team"

Uruguay and Mexico? They drew 0-, and Uruguay qualified second in the
group behind England (Mexico third), then got smashed in the quarter
finals by West Germany.

I think it was, and thinking about it, we cheered every time one team
kicked the ball and booed the other. Which would explain that wouldn't
it? God, it was dire. This time around I'll be seeing Ivory Coast -
Holland (which should be bloody good but you never can tell) and Spain
- Tunisia (mincing dagos against their illegal immigrant neighbours
which ought to be interesting ;-)

It's funny because it's true: didn't the timeline go something like.......:
early 80s......'we want a world cup' -> 1987, win world cup -> [but
then......] didn't win -> didn't win -> didn't win....... 'the world cup
means nothing, it's a lottery'....... didn't win ->....
I could go on....
