Earning potential [message #1006077] Fri, 12 May 2006 06:01

Just out of interest ( and I daresay I could probably find out the answer
with a little google-work) but how much moolah are these SH to NH transfers
likely to make? Jono Gibbes for example, relatively high profile, durable,
NZ Maori captain has just moved to the UK - what is his earning potential
in pounds? Are there accompanying endorsements ( TV ads, etc.) that
supplement his salary? How do UK earnings compare with those a foreign rugby
player can make in a place like Japan?
Cheers
Brad

There's a club salary cap of a little over 2 million, which has to be
spread amongst the squad. When Wilkinson returned from the World Cup,
he was apparently made the highest paid player in the premiership on
=A3200,000. Realistically, Gibbes could expect a salary no higher than
=A3100,000 - I think it would be somewhere between 50-100k myself. There
are other perks the clubs can get away with though (house, car, bonuses
etc). I don't think Gibbes would earn much in terms of endorsements -
probably another 10k or so a year.

TV ads, are you mad? Wilkinson just about managed two, and they were
pretty shite. Do you think the general population even know what rugby is?
