I mentioned this a while back, but the BBC are obviously way behind.
Personally I think it's a good call on a number of levels. Firstly, can
you show me a better player on current form in the GP? I don't think so
- he's had an awesome season. Secondly, he's made no secret of his
desire to coach. Bath tried to tempt him away from Irish with a
coaching role (Ashtons off, the BBC just don't know it yet) but he went
for one more season. I don't blame him, he really seems to be enjoying
himself at Irish. I think we should take the youngsters (Barkley,
Abbott, Tait etc) but I also think they'd benefit massively from having
Catt around. As an aside, I believe Frank Bunce played his last test at
36? He wasn't too bad now was he?

If anything he was playing his best rugby in those latter years as
well.

I suppose at 26 Abbott is still a youngster if centres can go on until
36....
Good to have him around England still, we could do a lot worse for a
backs coach when the time comes, especially as he's played in a few
positions.

His personal 100 metres is 10.8 seconds and that was in his bare paws
on his cage's treadmill, so he'd probably be an asset.

I'll second that. Sad to say I think his legs are starting to go and he
won't be able to make 80 minutes at full pace for much longer. But
there's nothing wrong at all up top and the way he and Flutey get the
back line going is a joy to watch.

But Bunce was a world class player until he retired - you cant eevn mention
Bunce and Catt in the same breath
Catt has been found wanting against good opposition - the All Blacks made a
fool of him IIRC on one of my trips to Twickenham (99 i think)
The media reports that he has had a good season for Irish - but a standout
season in a mediocre competition is poles apart from a test series to a land
where your last test effort resulted in a 76-0 drubbing.
He will be shown up as old and slow - by a resurgent yellow team - and put
out to pasture where he should have stayed.

Catt was crucial in Englands semi final performance against France, and
again played a vital role when he came on for the final. He has a world
cup winners medal, which would suggest that he was world class.

No, Lomu ran over him, but he's done that to plenty of other people as
well. His early international career was a bit shaky as England
dithered on where to play him, and also didn't play a stye that suits a
free running centre.

'Last Test Effort' - here's the last 5 England vs Aus results for you
as I'd not want to let the facts get in the way.
England 26 - 16 Australia 12/11/05
England 19 - 21 Australia 27/11/04
Australia 51 - 15 England 26/06/04
Australia 17 - 20 England 22/11/03
Australia 14 - 25 England 21/06/03

It may suggest it but doesn't necessarily mean it's true. Was Murray Pierce
world class?
