Filo Tiatia! The Ospreys are running an old folks home, are they?

Good player in his day...

At the beginning of the 2005/06 season, Cardiff Blues found themselves
in the position of having to play a largely 3rd string back line
because of injury and illness. Consequently, they lost match after
match - often by small margins, but nevertheless they were losses they
could ill afford. Now they find themselves at full strength, ten points
(two matches with bonus points) behind the leaders with two to play.
So, have they learned from that? Are they going to replace second and
first line players with equivalents or better? No, they've brought in
two props and a lifelike miniature of a New Zealander All Black
fullback.

The weaknesses evident at second row, blindside flank, inside centre
and wing have been ignored. So, with Dai Young committing himself to
another two years at CAP, we can expect more of the same: ignominy and
broken dreams.

I wouldn't worry too much about Ben Blair. He's about average in the
S14 but easily good enough for Celtic League games.

I saw him play at Ravenhill in 2002 for NZ against Ireland A and he
made absolute mincemeat of the opposition.

Four years on, four years more experience in S12/14.

Next year Cardiff will rave about him as much as they rave about Xavier
Rush.

Nice post. Slate the Celtic League, in which the probable European
Champs play, thus by implication the entire NH, and promote S14, NZ and
NZ players. I'm in awe.

Seriously, the reason Rush gets such great plaudits is he does
everything correctly. Not necessarily better than others, but you can
see he's learned the basics properly, which is often sadly lacking in
the locals. Add to that, the incredible fitness of the guy and you have
a very useful combination. If he had a bit more pace, he'd be the best
number 8 playing in Europe.

I'm looking forward to Blair playing in Cardiff. Our current full back
is really a winger and his understudy, Jamie Roberts, while having all
the attributes and a solid six foot five frame to boot, is still only
nineteen.

The main thing I hope the Cardiff boys get from our NZ imports is
attitude and technique. While the fitness levels are there or
thereabouts, and perfectly acceptable in CL terms, they don't seem to
go the extra yards, which is evident from people like the X-man, or
even comeback kid Jonah Lomu. I live not far from the sprint training
academy in Cardiff, and at on any given evening, you could look over
the fence and you'd find JL training with Olympic standard athletes.
The guys is TOTALLY dedicated. That's the difference.

There are other differences. One that's going to be apparent in a matter
of weeks which springs immediately to mind is player depth and
strength of development programme.

NZ is about to name 99 players for international duty in June to play in
matches given Test status by their various oppositions. On top of a S14
where two Saffer and two Aussie sides make up the numbers alongside all
five Kiwi franchises in the top nine, NZ is developing talent at a pace
that other rugby playing nations will struggle to match.

Hi Martyn :-)

Glad you thought so...

>Slate the Celtic League,

The way I hear it the Irish squad players (Leinster + Munster) couldn't
give two hoots about the Celtic League, hence Ulster being top of the
Celtic League table.

Leinster and Munster concentrate on the European Cup and thrashing the
Welsh teams.

Ulster concentrate on squeaking home against the Welsh teams home and
away and beating the Leinster and Munster 3rd XV's

Scottish turnout at Netherdale resembles a large-ish queue for the bus
and Glasgow play at a dog track. Admittedly the Gunners support isn't
too bad. They sometimes have as many as 2,000 people at Murrayfield
(capacity 67,500)

Can't say I've seen much of the Welsh teams this season but I do know
that your Maama Molitika taking out our beloved Paul Steinmetz
(Paraparaumu, Wellington, Hurricanes, Highlanders, NZ) at Ravenhill
last week was foul play of the highest standard. What do they teach
your young Welsh players.....and what sort of Welsh name is Maama
Molitika.

>in which the probable European Champs play

Biarritz by twenty

> thus by implication the entire NH

Wrong....... There are some parts of the NH that I really like...the
Vasa Museum, Kennedy Space Centre, Gracelands, the city of Salzburg,
Portmeirion....the end is listless

>and promote S14, NZ and NZ players. I'm in awe.

My pleasure. A little awe never hurt nobody.

> I'm looking forward to Blair playing in Cardiff.

He was sound tonight in the Highlanders loss to Queensland Reds. His
usual reliable game on defence. His try-saving covering tackle on Drew
Mitchell was superb.

However his missed kicks at goal cost them. The Highlanders would have
been more in the game instead of playing their usual catch-up in the
second half.

And, also as usual, unless he's in space his attacking ability is
non-existant.

> The main thing I hope the Cardiff boys get from our NZ imports is

I think what you'll get from Ben Blair is what the Dragons got from
Percy Montgomery, except with less of an attacking edge. A blood and
guts defender and usually a pretty reliable goal kicker but he's
extremely average running against half decent opposition. Sort of a mix
between Percy and Shane Williams.

Miguel :-)

It'll be interesting to see what side Leinster put out against the
Blues at the Millennium Stadium on Sunday.

The Welsh regions were awful in the first part of the season. No
strength in depth in my opinion, but that will come with time - we're
only a few years into regional development and a lot of the old
attitudes have still to be worn out.

A bit of an over simplification.

I thought it a perfectly acceptable head high tackle myself. Cheeky get
deserved it for trying to be too clever by half.

A silly one? Or is that being too Anglo-Centric in my appreciation of
naming conventions?

No way. They're going to get thumped by the Munstermen.

I can't believe you didn't include Barry Island in that list. The same
level of class...

So, it's just attitude then. I'll watch the Highlanders game tonight
when I get home.

Bugger, it's the Crusaders on the box. Good last ten minutes, the rest
was pants. Fek, I wish we had a Carter - that boy has everything. And a
McCaw too, please Mister Cringle.

I know, sickening isn't it? Carter keeps getting better and
better...i'm sure one of these days he'll be tackled and a flap of
sking will peel away revealing a positronic brain, complete with
blinking coloured lights.
