Scarlets 18-6 Munster
Very nice for the Blues: Scarlets win and no bonus points either way.
Very nice for Wales: another young 10 with potential steps off the
Carmarthen conveyor belt in the shape of Craig Evans. The youngster had
a very good game and despite a slightly shaky start, he looked
increasingly confident as he got into the pace of the game, scoring two
penalties - one from sixty metres - and a conversion.
In a tense, error strewn first half, the scoring was opened by Jerry
Manning after 15 minutes and closed by Alix Popham twenty-two minutes
later, coming off the back of a five metre scrum as the Munster eight
disintigrated. Apart from total Scarlets dominance of possession and
territory, there was little else to tell.
To be fair to Munster, they were fielding a second string side, and
made quite a fist of it, defending staunchly as the Scarlets launched
blunt edged attack after attack. And to be equally fair to the
Scarlets, they had two players at 10 and 12 who were playing for
Carmarthen Quins last week, a second choice prop, lock, scrum half, and
both wings, so they weren't exactly at full strength. Given the lack of
first choice players on display, you would expect the play to be
laboured. You would be correct, too. A half time score of 5-3 says it
all. If you take into account the the singular fact there were no other
chances for either side, except the woeful conversion attempt, then you
might get an idea of just how dire it was.
The second half again opened with Manning putting Munster II in the
lead with a neatly taken penalty. Craig Evans replied soon after for
the Scarlets. The ever dynamic Dwayne Peel was now on and provided the
men in blue with far more interesting options than the efficient, but
uninspired Stuart-Smith. It was the scrum-half's urgings that persuaded
Aled Gravelle to peel of the back of a maul and run with the ball to
within two metres of the line, set up the ruck and provide quick ball
for Popham to bag his second.
For a blonde with a particularly girlie haircut, Popham is proving to
be quite a tidy number eight. Certainly, on this form and with Gippo in
the hot seat for Wales, Michael Owen had better pick up his game if he
is to retain his place. Morgan added the extra two points and wound up
the scoring with his sixty yarder late in the game.
This effectively leaves Munster needing to win the HC to put some
silverware in their cabinet after a superb season, as they are now to
all intents and purposes out of the CL running. The Scarlets have blown
any chance of adding to their tally of pots and have looked a shadow of
their normal selves for most of what can only be described as a
disappointing season. How they fare next season after the "Under New
Management" signs go up, only time will tell.

Tell me Martyn, is there anyone in Wales NOT called Evans, Williams,
Jenkins, Davies or Jones?

I'd have to dye my hair ginger, lose about seven stone, gain about 20
seconds over 100 metres and probably have to pick up the ball and run
with it occasionally. Then there's my good looks....

Yes, there are the Thomases. Reposting a quote from the Specator from
04 after the .za test:
"Saturday’s six broke rugby’s record of surname surfeit, held since
1939 when a quintet named Davies took on Ireland in Belfast. Last
week’s debutant, Ryan, was history’s 73rd Welsh rugby international
called Jones. Wales’s moniker muster then follows: Davies 59, Williams
49, Evans 46, Thomas 40 — that’s not counting (rugger being rugger)
two posh hooraying hyphens which, nicely, cap the list: T.
Jones-Davies (capped 1930) and H. Williams-Jones (1989)."

If you were Welsh, why on earth would you insist on hyphenating your
name like that? Imagine the conversation..."Now look yurrr Mr. Jones,
I'll only marry you if you agree that our children will take both our
surnames, I mean we don't want them forever being associated with yur
common or garden sort Jones's's's, we need to indicate they are also
descended from the Davies's's's' too. Look you."

Why would ANYONE want to hyphenate their name anyway? Believe it or not
there are a number of Jones-Jones's in the phonebook. I also find
titles a little bit strange, take The Right Honourable Major Sir Tasker
Watkins VC GBE - his full moniker is larger than he is:

bastard though.

That bunch of chinless wonders have not won a medal for bravery between
them, EVER. Despite his incredibly silly name, Tasker Watkins IS a VC.
And they don't come free with your breakfast cereal.

Nah, that's a chair he's sitting on. Sadly Charles can only park up on a
commode these days....
