I think the fullback Sheperd is looking good for fullback and along with
Sharpe these two should be in the starting lineup with SS on the bench

Latham, Hewat, Mitchell -- all contenders for the 15 jersey.

Latham has bad hamstring problems and could be out for a while

As for the others I reckon Sheperd is playing better

Fitter is a good prospect also, and Fava might be in line for a bench spot.

Mitchell has had some pretty ordinary form at times this year. I
doubt he's in the mix. And anyway, he's talented but not
talented enough to overcome his size. Gitteau is, Mitchell isn't.

Full back is down to Latham, Hewart and Rodgers. I expect Hewart
to get the nod, based on his long kicking. Connelly loves a long
kicker. He gets all misty eyed and thinks of Roger Gould.

Yeah but he suffers from playing in a losing team syndrome.
Hewat has been the Waratah's golden boy for two years now. If Latham is out,
Hewat will get it.

I get all misty eyed when I think of Roger Gould.

The most complete fullback I've ever seen. If only he wasn't Australian,
he'd be perfect.

True that, if Hewat does not make the Wallabies this year I call conspiracy,
still can't beleive he was left out last year.

Heart is a much more accomplished player this year. His kicking game
and his defence have improved out of sight with some professional training
and coaching, and he's probably got some improvement left in him yet. At
the moment, he appears to have the longest, most consistent kick in
Australian Rugby, and when it comes to goal kicking he's suddenly Mr 80%.

So, this year he looks like a test player but he sure as hell
didn't last year, not to me.

In last year's final, the Crusaders exploited is (then) weaknesses
horribly.

Not from this year's showing. Mitchell had to drop him for his shithouse workrate.

And that would be because I meant Hardy. Bloody props, they all look
alike even when they don't.

I got his autograph as an awestruck schoolboy in 1982. For all his sublime
skills, he was always a back with the face of a forward, I thought :)

Staniforth has been awesome this season, he must be close, the bench at
least

Hewat caught my eye playing for Manly in the 2004 Tooheys New Cup.. and,
well, the reason he did was the startling mix of moments of brilliance
and complete brain explosions. That and the way he sticks his tongue out
the corner of his mouth when kicking.

I can see why selectors weren't eager to rush him into the Wallabies
even after his good Super 12 season. But like mg, I call conspiracy if
he doesn't get picked this year. At least he should be on the bench
where he can cover for fullback and wing.

Cheers!
David...

And, of course, the only reason Hewart even got a chance at Super12 level
was because the coach of Manly became the backline coach of the Waratahs.
Other than that, he'd be playing for Manly this weekend.

Now, with the appropriate level of coaching and opportunity, he's a test
possible.

I've got a feeling Hewart has got a few brain explosions up his sleeve
yet. He's that sort of player.

On the other hand, his improvement over last year both in defense and
as a kicker is quite something to behold.

Connolly prefers his players dour, grumpy and ugly, which
puts Hewart on the outer. On the other hand, Connolly will forgive
almost anything for a long boot.
