Would boxing be better if we got rid of the rating siystem [message #1005056] Thu, 04 May 2006 19:47

In my opinion this is how I would improve boxing, I would get rid of
the rating system. No top ten , no number one contender business or
anything and I have a few arguments why.
1. Promoters like Don King can manipulate the rating system
2. The rating system is hardly honored anyway
3. When a promoter like Don King has the contracts of all the people in
the top ten he can monopolize and ruin fighters
4. Do we really care what a fighter is ranked, ;let me give you an
example. Ok remember when Foreman fought Holyfeld? Now tell me without
looking up anything online and your on the honor system do you remember
what Foreman was ranked when he fought Holyfeld? Do you even care?
5. If you get rid of the rating system I think boxing would sell
better and here is why. Fans know the fights they want to see, they do
not need some list done by some organization to tell them.
The way fights would be decided is soley by popular demand and what the
fans want to see.
Instead of a rating system all the fights that take place will be done
by popular demind and decided by the fans and nobody else. Also here is
another solution to people who would ask the question of how do you
stop champions from ducking fighters. Again, I think it should be up to
the fans I think if fans think a champion should be stripped he or she
should have his title stripped.

The question I have of you then would be:

How would we know who is champion without some sort of hiearchy?

The issue really isn't the rankings, it's the number of different
ratings we had. If we had just one system that everybody accepted, the
rankings wouldn't be the issue.

Look at the way the number of polls causes debates in college football.

But the problem is without some sort of ranking system, we would really
not know who deserves any title shots and who doesn't. You run the
risk of mismatches and that would lead to people getting seriously
killed.

Personally, as big a boxing fan as I am, the fans don't know enough
about the guys who are prospects enough to dictate which champion
should fight which fighter. The majority of boxing fans tend only to
remember the big names.

Ok let me give you an example about a case where some fighters who
SHOULD have fought one another did not fight one another simply because
of red tape or fought simply when it was not much of a fight anymore:
1. Tyson-Holyfeld yes it happened but not when they were both
undefeated when I think it should have
2. Tyson-Foreman everyone wanted to see this
3. Chavez-Whitaker I think happened to late in the career of Chavez
4. Lewis-Holyfeld I think happened to late
5. Bowe-Tyson
6. Bowe-Lewis

Pro boxing would be better if we got rid of the 20 or so "world"
championship sanctioning bodies. I was looking at the Ring Magazine ratings
from 1958. Ah, the simplicity of it all. 8 weight divsions, 8 champions,
and 10 contenders per division. Back in those days you knew who the champs
were. Now you need a scorecard.

1. Tyson-Holyfield would have happened much earlier if Tyson hadn't
gone to prison.

2. Tyson-Foreman, I don't think was a feasible possiblity.

3. I agree Lewis-Holyfield was too late

4. Bowe-Tyson was a result of the politics

5. As it turns out, Bowe's manager, Rock Newman, might have been a
little scared of Lewis.

I definitely agree there should be an elimination of some of the
sanctioning bodies. I don't even have a problem with the number of
weight classes, but the number of sanctioning bodies has to be reduced.

There is no one empowered to get rid of any of them.

I seem to remember that when the IBF was the new kid, Larry Holmes put
it on the map by identifying with it's belt (my memory is hazy on this.
Can anyone flesh this out?)

It think that there is no one who WANTS to get rid of the sanctioning
bodies. It was Larry Holmes who put the IBF on the map, just as folks
like De La Hoya and Marco Antonio Barrera helped put the WBO on the
map.

There is too much money involved in this.
