Hal Houle update [message #1003367] Thu, 04 May 2006 05:55

For anyone who's interested, I had a call from Hal Houle last night. He sounded
fine, stronger than the last time we spoke. In addition to some discussion of
aiming methods, he mentioned that he will soon be driving cross-country with his
son, as he relocates to northeastern Pennsylvania.

We couldn't talk for that long, since I had people arriving for my weekly
hold'em game when he called, but I was also surprised to discover that Hal was a
life-long tennis player of some note, having had significant tournament success
in open doubles competition in the state of California, which is saying
something.

He'd be a great guy to sit down and talk with over a dinner or a couple of beers
-- or a pool table. It would ne nice to have that experience some day.

I very much enjoyed spending a couple of evenings with Hal here in Denver
about 3 or 4 years ago. One of them, we were joined by John Barton (fka
Collins) at Paradise Billiards, (fka Family Fun Center). I just realized,
all the names have been changed except me and Hal. Guess we aren't
innocent!

Hal is a great guy and fun to chat with, but I've lost track of how many
times he said he was coming cross-country and would see me then. Yet to
happen. :)

Just as an aside, why don't you play poker instead of that imposter hold
'em? :)

Because for a weekly hold'em game I usually have a full table and a waiting
list. When I make it a mixed game, or even just throw in some Omaha, I'm lucky
if I can get 6.

Thanks Ghost.
Hal is a good guy. He's contacted me several times over the years via
email. I've never had the opportunity to talk to him on the phone...I wish
I had. I'm not an *aiming method guy*, but I would love to hear some of his
memories and experiences of years past.

Hal was kind enough to telephone me this past weekend to talk for a while.
While we were talking he asked me how I was at making caroms and I remarked,
"not all that good". He asked if I would like to learn a system for making
caroms and I said sure. After a few tries, I was able to apply his aiming
system with mixed results, most of them positive. Later on that night I was
playing a nine ball match with one of my local competitors and I was
shooting on the 4 ball and did not have much of a safety available and could
not pocket the object ball. Remembering my lesson with Hal, I decided to
give it a shot. The shot was something like this START(
%AB8\1%BC1B7%CB7[6%Db9T2%E\7Z9%Fh4H3%GN1Y4%H\2H9%IO4S2%JB5[9
%KB9[5%LB4[9%MC3[8%NB7[9%OC4C1%Pp1L4%WC6[8%XN5T0%YQ2R9%Zb5S1
%[c8S2%\o6L8%_b3Z3%`b9V2%ac2U0
)END

The five ball was difficult to make unless you had cue ball in hand, moved
it or if you played perfect shape you might have a chance. Anyway after
applying his system the cue ball caromed into the nine ball and the nine
ball slid into the corner pocket. I had some pretty good luck but with the
system fresh in my mind, the carom shot won the game and deflated my
opponent's confidence.

I like to hear Hal talk about Ralph Greenleaf. GREAT stories. Ralph was as
much a character as is Hal. I just wish he could type fast but at 82 you
don't do much of anything fast, I suppose.

Give Hal a call and let us know your progress if any, Tom.
