I am a frustrated golfer, that as you will see from my username, use to
play the game pretty good. Only 4 years ago I won my local courses'
club championship with a round of 70, last evening I posted a lovely 47
for 9 holes and I did not give up on the round because I had been
playing a match with another coworker. 4 years ago my handicap was 1,
now I am approaching 9. I go to the range and hit the ball very well
and when I go to play I can't seem to hit a fairway or a green anymore.
Has anyone else out there experienced this kind of free fall, and if
so please, please give me some advice how to get out of it. I know
that specifics will be hard to offer, but I am looking for anything
that can help. To me my swing feels the same, I have never been into
mechanics and have always been a feel type player. I am always
thinking about the shots I used to be able to hit and If this continues
it is going to be hard to take knowing how I used to be able to play.
Please help!!!

OK, we'll add golf to the ever growing list of things you're failing at.

I'm a poor player and you're a good player. But I do like the advice
that I have seen elsewhere for people who don't play the same way on
the course as on the range:
Make those two experiences as similar as possible. Use the exact
same pre-shot routine both places. Visualize the fairway on the
range and take your shot. Visualize where the ball landed and take
the next shot. Make your short approach shot. Keep track of
your GIR on the range.
Beyond that, maybe course management needs re-thinking. Maybe you've
stopped thinking with a familiar course. Change tees, change a
course, tee off with a 5I on a par-5 just to get you thinking again...
Until you're over the ball ready to swing, that is - then you need to
have a good forgetter.
Re-read _Zen Golf_ or _Golf is Not a Game of Perfect_, and work on
your head game.
I haven't seen this recommended, but I have started to do something on
the range - the first shot with each club is designed to get as close
as I can to the nearest target. The goal is to increase my feel for
partial swing shots.

My driving has always (most always) been very good. Went out with my Bud
a few weeks ago and my driving was terrible. Went to the range and found
out that I was pressing too much and trying to kill the ball. His drives
are quite often 30 -40 yards better than mine when he kills one and that
day he was driving great. None of the rest of his game was however. I
find that a comfortable swing of 80% usually goes straighter and farther.

Free advice here is worth about as much as you'll pay for it. Nada.
If you were that good once, go see a Pro and take 4-6 lessons.

Sounds like most of it is in your head. Where are most of your
stroke going? Long game, short game, putting? If you were a 1 at one
point you were pretty good at most of it.

Mostly the tee ball. I used to drive the ball effortlessy, now I can
barely make solid contact. I think you are right, I just have no
confidence in my game anymore, especially off the tee.

Maybe you should ditch the drive for a while and just hit a FW wood off
the tee until you get some of your confidence back.

Larry makes good sense. Loose the driver
for a while and hit either a 3 wood or even
an iron from the tee box. I found that for
some time I was hitting with a 3 wood
better than a driver. When I was getting
real good at hitting the 3 from the tee. I
switchedback to the driver and what a
difference. Nice straight high flying shots.
Then of course I got over juiced and now
back to the 3 wood.
I don't remember who said this but, it's true.

I've been where you're at. I went from about a 5 handicap index to not
breaking 100 in the course of a couple of months. It was getting so
frustrating that I switched to golfing left-handed for a couple of rounds
before giving up the game for 2 years. In my case, it probably had more to
do with the things that were going on in my private life than with golf
itself. The time off was refreshing. I sorted my life out and returned with
a renewed love for the game. What changed were the expectations that I
placed on myself. Now I don't care so much about score, but more on enjoying
the walk, the scenery and the company. I'm almost back to the handicap I was
at before my troubles began and enjoying golf more than ever. I hesitate to
give advice, because I don't know your situation, but I'm glad I did what I
did. Good luck.

Tiger was the same way during his "slump." He called himself Ranger
Rick, because he hit the ball great on the range, then couldn't hit a
fairway during competition.
In other words, I predict you will win two majors next year.
