B.A.D. Team [message #994517] Sun, 30 April 2006 21:40

Ok, mostly everyone here feels as if the B.A.D. Team are truly living up to
their name. How much thought did HBO put into this? Perhaps selection of
Lewis was a result of him being an HBO fighter. Who would you guys like to
see as a team?

As far as expert boxer, they couldve picked someone with more charisma and
personality, Shannon Briggs comes to mind. Antonio Tarver is good, although
I think he is after Roy's old spot. Other good expert boxers are Mark
Johnson, Chris Byrd, and Virgil Hill. In the future I think Joe Mesi will
be an excellent commentator.

As far as blow by blow and color, I am not too sure.
Vinny Paz may be a good choice for color.

What are your general opinions of other notables who are already employed or
unemployed....such as....

Rich Marotta
Barry Tompkins
Bobby Czyz
Sean O'Grady
Al Berstein ( a real steal for Showtime)
Nick Charles
Steve Farhood
Joe Tessitore
Kevin Kelly
etc....

I am watching these fights to see good boxing. I am not watching them for
some announcer's fucking charisma. I like Lewis because he says something
when he has something to say, and shuts the fuck up when he doesn't. You
might learn from him.

well we all are, but it's nice to have an expert analyst to break down the
fights and tell you whats being done right and wrong and what could be done
by a fighter during the course of the fight

but it would be nice if they had it

I like Lewis too, but was merely asking, was he the best choice?

I thought Lennox Lewis's commentary was insightful and to the
point. It wasn't biased or agenda driven like Emanuel Steward's point of
view often is. Can't take Max Kellerman though. He gives me a headache.
He's loud, obnoxious and won't shut up.

I like them. I really liked Bernstein and Tompkins when they

Not overly fond of either.

Not bad.

I get totally annoyed when an "expert" analyst, who has never
boxed or trained, tries to say what a boxer should do. Atlas is a
prime example of this. These people are *not* inside the fighter's
head. To me, Bernstein is the best. He describes the fight without
turning into a trainer. He can state his opinion on what a fighter
might do, without making it sound as if he knows better than the
fighter or the trainer. How many times have we heard an analyst Addis
a fighter for not doing what he thinks they should, only to have the
fighter do exactly what was said he wasn't doing - and then they have
to back peddle fast and cover their asses.

Mute buttons are a wonderful invention.

Err, Teddy Atlas has "never boxed or trained?"

Bernstein is hands down the best. The beautiful thing about Bernstein
is that he calls the "fight" not the fighters. But I bet if you asked
him what he thought of Atlas's or Steward's fight commentary, he'd
tell you that as trainers they see and understand things sometimes
that he doesn't. But not very often, that's for sure.

If HBO ever, and I mean EVER, puts on Antonio Tarver's stuttering ass,
I will immediately cancel my subscription.

Marotta, Tompkins, Bernstein, and Farhood are definitely the best of
that group. They do the research and contribute something of value to
the discussion. Apart from Lederman, I'd guess any single one of those
guys watches more tape than everyone on World Championship Boxing on
HBO combined. Nick Charles fits the Lampley role way better than Lamps
does, and Czyz and O'Grady are just terrible. Tessitore as announcer is
ehhh, though I'd take him and Atlas over the HBO guys because they do
at least minimal research (a lot of time logged on Boxrec) before
talking about how guys are on forums. Kevin Kelly isn't too bad, but I
haven't seen enough of him yet.

Guilty Boxing usually puts together a good crew, but I can never
remember any of the guys in it. Ehh, what can you do.

WTF??? Beautiful post Melanie. Loved your "prime example". <s>

What boxing needs are people who have been trained to push buttons ("don't
try this at home, they're trained professionals") calling fights.

Tarver doesnt stutter at all and is quite articulate, even though he gets on
my nerves with his mouth. You may have to cancel, because he has at least
interviewed with HBO for Roy's old spot.

Atlas has never trained anyone from the beginning. He really
wasn't instrumental in Tyson's development and any boxer he's been
with since was started and trained by someone else. He may have
boxed, I don't know, but that still doesn't give him the arrogant
authority to state as fact what's in a fighter's head.

Having met Al, he is one of the nicest people ever and would
say something nice and positive about any trainer.

Oh boy, you ever want to hear a biased announcer? Raul Marquez and anyone
else who does Top Rank or Golden Boy cards. Marquez is the Spanish speaking
version of Lampley and Merchant.

To me, Raul Marquez's voice sounds very similar to de la Hoya's voice. It's
almost as if he's doing a DLH imitation.

Well, that is his former Olympic roomie, good friend, idol and employer.
