Seems like Byrd's strategy of hoping Wlad would fall apart was misplaced, at
least for himself. While Byrd in the past has proven he can take punches and
cleverly slipped work etc. tonight his idea of standing toe to toe clearly
didnt serve him well. Byrd does look to be slowing as he gets older
Wlad landed pretty much as he wanted, and never really looked pushed out of
second gear. The stoppage was fine, Byrd had been out of it for a couple of
rounds - I think his corner were on the ring apron wanting the stoppage
after the second knockdown. Hearing "two time heavyweight champion of the
world" was a bit vomit worthy, but I guess thats the marketing business.
I know folk may dislike me for saying it, but I'd love to see a rematch with
Brewster.

I don't believe that Byrd could have done much of anything differently.
Trying to slip and get inside would have walked himself into the
punches earlier. Wlad simply was big enough to muscle Byrd and
possesses quick enough reflexes that the outside punches landed
cleanly.

At least he didn't call him the Mannheim Steamroller. ;-)

Why not rematch them? There are much less dramatic fights in the HW
division. Lamon Brewster is a former champ and Wlad has a score to
settle.
Lamon has the eye issue to work through first though.

Brewster's gonna need some time off now for that eye injury. As is, I
really like his answer to who he wants to fight next: Another champion
or Calvin Brock. That's 4 of the top 6-7 heavyweights right now (the
only other guys would be Wlad himself, Ruiz, and Brewster). I do want a
rematch with Brewster eventually. Plus Wladimir is pretty active,
already nearing 50 wins. That's gonna work into his advantage. He may
retire with 70-75 fights.

He was patient, didn't punch himself out, and fought exactly the
fight Manny asked him to fight. Really, what more could you
ask for? It was a perfect performance for Vlad.

If Brewster really did have a detached retina, he won't be
available for awhile. I'd like to see Vlad take on either
Rahman or Liakhovich. The latter fight would be a great
one, I think.

I agree - but as for what you COULD ask for would be a guy to knock out Byrd
especially with so much time left in the round. I'd agree if Byrd had a
punch to trouble Wlad - but as it was he offered nothing.
Im not saying Wlad should have panicked or tried in desperation to end the
fight - just up the pace and try to get his man out of there. Maybe that is
what Steward will get him to do next.

Too bad that they stopped the fight before Wlad could really hurt that
loser. :(

I don't think that is the smart thing for him to do considering his
past losses. Better for him to keep fighting smart, not get out of
control, and just secure the win. Just as Manny said to him in the
corner. If he would have gotten crazy and been nailed by a lucky punch
by Byrd and floored (not likely I realize), we'd all be talking about
his weak chin and how he'll get KO'ed by Rahman and such. I think he
did the right thing. I even nodded, smiled, and silently commended him
when I saw him chill out and go back to the fight plan.

That was a superb fight by Klitschko. I thought it was pretty funny
that he fought such a careful fight against the featherfisted Byrd who
showed up to trade. If Wlad had actually brawled with Byrd I think he
would have KO'ed him inside of 3. But its good to see him able to
execute an effective plan so beautifully, and I think he made the right
choice in sticking with it. Thats the most important thing in my
opinion. He fought a perfect fight and didn't freak out or overwork
himself. His conditioning was also great.
It really looks like he has his game back together with the help of
Manny Stewart and I am very happy to see it. I think he is ready to
step it up and become the dominant heavyweight again. Hats off to him
for an excellent performance.
I'm ready to see him fight Rahman. If he pulls off a convincing win
against Rahman and beats Brewster in a rematch I will have no problem
calling him the undisputed heavyweight champ. I think if he fights
like he did tonight he is more than capable of beating both.
