Ben Blair and Taufa'ao Filise for Cardiff Blues [message #983749] Wed, 03 May 2006 11:19

The Blues look set to confirm two more signings over the next few days,
as at long last, they look to get pen to paper on a forgein duo for
next season.

The first, Ben Blair, will be following Xavier Rush and Jonah Lomu in
making the switch from New Zealand to Cardiff. Blair is 27 and has 4
All Black caps, the last of which in November of 2004 at the Millenium
Stadium. He is a very talented full back with the added ability to kick
long-range penalties aswell. He has been on loan to the Highlanders
this season from his contracted side, the Crusaders, but he has become
disallusioned by his role at the club, and sees the move to Wales as
the perfect solution.

The second is Tongan prop, Taufa'ao Filise. Measuring 6ft 4 and
weighing at a massive 19 stone he is very much a heavyweight in the
front row. He signed with Bath last season, but his contract expires in
a month at the end of the current season. He has 11 caps for Tonga as
well as 3 Pacific Island caps. He is 28 years old, and has previous
experience at the Aukland Blues, like Rush and Lomu.

Perfect for Blair perhaps - but will Cardiff be expecting him to make any
tackles? He can be a weak link in defence and is a known turnover target in
SH rugby. He is a little too small to be a standout in his position although
his skill level is very high. So probably a candidate for player of the year
then :)

Cheers, aMtt

Interestingly, the club captain, Rhys Williams plays at FB. He's also a
small player with bags of pace. Rhys has not knowingly completed a
tackle in his entire career, although he did once bump into Shane
Williams.

Blair is a midget. He's hobbit sized. He's bigger than a bread box, but
not by much. Half time entertainment here in NZ used to include a Blair
tossing competition, along with the usual kick at goal from halfway
etc. Jerry Collins supposedly threw him into the 10th row of the Paul
Kelly stand at Jade one year and won a free Happy Meal, a full tank of
gas, and a voucher for a car wash 'n' coffee, but I can't find a link.
Blair developed his speed and sidestep directly as a result of trying
to get off the field at half time before the competition started. Maybe
you could suggest something similar for the Blues, or even see if they
could get him to wrestle Shane Williams at halftime. That sort of stuff
is always funny. Chicks love it.

And I suppose you think that is funny, Blanchett. Well, let me tell you,
Blair is a fine rugby player. Because he comes from Canterbury. End of
story. That feeble attempt at humour went right over my head. No, that
can't be right. I mean, right under my feet. I know funny, and that
wasn't funny. I have a degree in humour from the University of
Ashburton, and as Professor Copeland said to me, "Warrensen, humour is
as humour does," and I've always tried to live that principle in my
life. I think it was "humour". Maybe it was "stupid". I can't recall.
But it was damn funny, let me tell you. So next week I'm going to the
game with one of my quintessentially jocular posters: "Blair for Prime
Minister". I expect to be quite the comic on the day.

Spooky, Boyd, very spooky.

Unfortunately, you blew your cover with the "Blair for Prime Minister"
crack. That really IS funny.

Maybe he's going to stand on Taufa'ao Filise's shoulders.

LOL!! Ben Blair! He's about as big as a midgets cock. Although that
would probably make him the biggest guy if he played for Wales though.

Did you lie down with him standing next to you when you measured this or
did you just use a ruler?

well actually that is not the end of story, he doesnt come from
Canterbury, he passed through Canterbury but actually hails from
Westport on the West Coast. Canterbury poached him while he was still a
schoolboy boarding at St Andrews College - after they (St Andrews)
poached him from Buller High School.

I always wondered why he was never converted to a halfback.....
