Draws in the Super 12/14 [message #983511] Sat, 29 April 2006 23:04

Following three seasons without a single draw, the last three seasons
of Super 12/14 have seen a huge rise in the incidence of draws (11
from 552 games up to 2003; 9 from 208 games from 2004 onwards). An
increased aversion to losing, perhaps?

Not sure if you can provide stats, but one impresison I have is that defence
is also much tougher this year. Less Trys are being scored (?), and a there
seems to be a lot more handling errors due to the faster, rushing defence.
This is the usual pattern when there aren't any rule changes as teams learn
what the best defensive patterns are for a given set of rules and the games
tighten up. IMO this is bad as it means less interesting matchups. Since we
have at least 18 months to go before the pre RWC rule freeze lifts, could
this have a negative effect on the game? I can only imagine defence will get
tighter and tighter until most creative play is smothered out of the game
(until the new rules come in, then it all opens up again).
