Just managed to catch the U19 Final on Fox - not advertised or in their
listings, so pure chance I stumbled across this amazing final.
Australia ran out to a quick 14-0 lead in the opening 5 minutes after
some spilled ball by the NZers - second try an absolute cracker by the
Aussie winger who stood up his man brilliantly. Rest of the first half
was evenly contested with both sides having opportunities with NZ
picking up some penalty points just on the half.
Second half was totally engrossing with NZ finishing strongly with two
sensational tries with their Southland half-time full-back replacement
having the Aus backs at sixes and sevens - he changed the whole
completion of the game through some wonderful footwork and really had
the Aussies guessing. With just 5 minutes left to play NZ had clawed
their way back to within a point, missing the conversion meant that Aus
were clinging on by the barest of margins.
It was a deep drive towards the Kiwi line in extra time that finally
won the game, against the run of play, for Aus - with advantage on
thier side they drove for the line and just as the referee had called
advantage over, with the Kiwi backs blanketing the Aussie ball carrier,
he managed to get away a drop kick to move 4 points ahead.
There were then two more minutes of nail biting extra time with the
ball being run across the paddock in a desperate attempt by NZ to run
over the clock, but unluckily for them time ran out.
Great game by both teams with some real young talent on display - match
of the week for me.
Final score Aust 17 - NZ 14 - with rugby the winner on the day!

Howdy Karl...Thanks for the report. Well done the Aussies. You make it
sound as if the more deserving team won.
Just out of curiosity does anyone know if it was on TV here in NZ. I've
got the Rugby channel and Sky Sports but never saw anything advertising
the game.

Shame on you, Will_S. Don't you know that we NZ'ers believe it's the
playing of the game that matters, not the outcome :-)

Hi Miguel,
I think either team would have been a deserving winner - the game could
well have been won by NZ and with five minutes to go the game was
certainly heading that way. Had NZ not given away those two tries early
in the game and played with the class and determination they showed in
the 2nd half they would have won easily.
What impressed me most was the spirit in which the game was played and
the class of some of these youngsters.

It was only ever going to be shown if New Zealand won

I've watched quite a lot of this tournament and enjoyed it all
immensely. The main point for me has been the enthusiasm shown by the
players, especially when compared to the S14/GP timewasting tactics at
every scrum and lineout.
Another big benefit is that most of these players still do what they're
told, ie release the ball when the ref shouts "release", so the games
flow much better.
And finally, although I was hoping for NZ to go all the way, I was
really impressed with Australia's defence all through the tournament.
The pool match between Australia and NZ was a classic, and NZ only won
because of some very bad Australian kicking, leading to many missed
points and two charged down tries.
