Nice job on the spoiler. Really considerate.

Aus wins u/19s for first time. Pretty good standard of play, but fewer
errors from Aus made the difference - along with one big selection clanger:
Tane Puki didn't play the full 70 minutes. Not since Campese have I seen a
more exciting fullback at this level. The way he turned a 3 on 4 into an
overlap for a try, the way he escaped surrounding kick chasers, pretty much
every touch ...

From the polynesian gene distribution you could have been forgiven for
thinking that the sides had swapped playing strips. Aus rugby is benefiting
now from the way islander emigration patterns widened a decade or two back.
(translation into NH/SAish: now Aus is poaching too)

Nice job reading a Rugby newgroup if you didn't want to know the current
rugby results. Really smart.

Nice job acting like a dickhead for the sake of it. Including *Spoiler*
in the header of a thread that contains the result is just common courtesy.
You can see it on every result header posted today except yours. Yours has
the result *in* the header. That makes you inconsiderate, as William
correctly points out.

I think Bully's faux pas means he's just nominated himself for FAQ

results, don't come in here til after you've seen the game.

I know it's etiquette and all that, but I must admit I've always found
this particular convention to be overly pedantic and pointless. I agree
with Bully....why would you read a rugby ng if you were planning on
watching a recording of a game and didn't want to know the score? I go
along with the convention myself, but I admit it's less because I care
about others not wanting to know the score, but more to stave off the
flurry of complaints by the net nannies.

As a test, how many people were going to watch this game, but have now
had their enjoyment spoiled by Bully's header?

There are a lot of games going on all over the world on a weekend.
People cannot watch them all at the same time but they may wish to read
up on others they may not see. It is just a little common courtesy not
to spoil things for those who may not be able to see a match until later
on. If you intend to be deliberately discourteous expect to be treated
similarly.

Well, I for one - courtesy of my TiVo and satellite. I don't think the
convention is hard to follow - just the "spoiler" heading is enough to
warn me off. When you are forced to live off so much tape delayed
broadcast, keeping off the ng is not always a practical solution.

Generally, this is one of the more civilized ngs around, so this works.
Just like jeering while kicks are being taken, it is just sad when these
small courtesies are ignored.

You're living in the past, William, in quite a few areas, I have noticed.

Newsgroups are no longer the domain of academics and selcted government
employees. The gentlemanly conventions of neitiquette that once graced
these groups operate by consent only and are unenforceable, and to my
mind, many of them are rather quaint and somewhat silly.

The whole typing in capitals thing -- nerdy conventions introduced by
geeks who somehow imagined they had invented a whole new means of
communication. A computer's just an electronic device, after all,
written language has been around for four thousand years or so and just
because some spotty chinless wonders with thick glasses use an
electronic device as the medium insead of pen and paper doesn't give
them the right to dictate all sorts of behaviours associated with it.

I don't live in an area deluged with rugby television either. I
frequently watch delayed rugby videos. If I want to watch it without
knowing the result, my simple and obvious solution is not to visit rsru
until AFTER I have watched the game.

Spoiler headlines are not always effective in any case. The result can
be referred to obliquely in quite innocent posts. It's just common sense
to stay away.

It's not like rsru is so bloody riveting, after all.

Uncle Bully,

It isn't too hard to post without putting the result in the header.

There are times when I've wanted to catch up on topics within the
newsgroup while waiting for the replay of a game on tv - by your logic
I wouldn't be able.

Surely you can follow netiquette so that nobody is disadvantaged ? Its
not that difficult!

Indeed, civility and basic good manners do seem to have gone out of the
window, don't they? Especially in your part of the world.

Why do you assume that only academics and government employees are the
only people who can be courteous? Or should be expected to be? Is it
now commonly acceptable for everyone to behave like an oik and be proud
of it? You have been in Australia too long, and listened to too much
Kerry Packer.

What on earth has simple decent manners have to do with pen and paper
and "spotty chinless wonders"? Seems to me you have a strange view of
your role in defining global conventions for the 21st century.

It's not always clear exactly when a game is on, especially when it's
as minor as this U19 game. TiVos let you not worry about that sort of
thing.

That's another issue entirely. For someone who has been in the ng to
post a result so blatantly is like having your neighbour's dog poop on
your lawn - unnecessary and unwanted.

Come on Rick, its not that bloody hard to do. Why not just have "Under 19
World Cup Result" in the heading. Its not that hard to do. You dont have to
use the word *spoiler* in the heading just as long as you dont tell the
result.

Sure, it's not hard to do. I generally avoid it myself, if I remember,
just to appease those still living in La Belle Epoch.

But railing against those who choose not to is just a waste of
bandwidth. The end result is really the same -- as long as even a few
choose to ignore nerdiquette, it's not worth the risk of coming on to
rsru and spoling the anticipation of an unseen game, so everyone might
as well ignore it.

Yeah. How many times have I come home to watch the latest Force game,
only for it all to be ruined by Uncle Bully and his cohorts....many many....

Did this actually surprise anyone? Australia were clearly the class act
of the tournament. The earlier loss to NZ was not a true reflection of
the game, and owed more to sloppy play by the Aussies than any
qualities shown by NZ.

>From the perspective of a NH supporter, the gulf in class between the
two finalists and the rest of the teams is particularly worrying.

Simple question though:

Are you just going to be a dick for the sake of it? Common courtesy
costs nothing, after all. Taking pride in being a dick is the province
of children and inadequately endowed men.

No, not really, you do it just to p*** off those that still hope to find
civility and courtesy somewhere in the world. Fine - go ahead if you
will, it only calibrates the value of everything else you offer on rsru.

I think you misunderstood me, Bill old fruit. I generally avoid it
(giving away the result in the header) myself, if I remember...

In other words, I DON'T go out of my way to break the rules of
nerdiquette, not because I think they're worth a damp fart on a Saturday
night, but because I'm generally a nice sort of chap who really doesn't
want to upset anyone unncessarily.

Believe it or not.

(And I won't even mention the irony of several insults in several posts
from someone who has set up his little tent on the higher moral ground
to lecture us unwashed colonial oiks about civility and good manners).
