Force 23 - Crusaders.....23
Rick's bound to wrap it up better, but....it's a victory for the Force,
really, best result against the Crusaders in the competition.

The Force deserve full credit. Even I wanted them to win by the end. The
crowd support was fantastic too. Go Perth.

Putting the disallowed tries aside, the Force were robbed by an
inconsistant ref, who doesn't know how to play advantage to both side.
Great game, great atmosphere, pity Subiaco is CRAP!!!

No it's not a totally unbiased view, but it's approved by the ARU, so
basically it's to positively promote the game.
Still, I couldn't resist a comment about the TMO, which surprisingly
they let me away with:
FROM SPORTAL -- by Rick Boyd
FORCE GRAB DRAW
Television Match Official Geoff Acton was the most unpopular man in
Perth on Saturday night, disallowing a late try that would have broken a
23-all deadlock and given the Western Force an historic win over the
Crusaders.
The draw itself was a mighty feat as the Force rose to new levels while
a lacklustre Crusaders made uncharacteristic errors against the
competition cellar dwellars.
Supported by 30,200 ebullient Western Australians at Subiaco Oval, the
Force crackled with energy as they dominated the first half, leading by
an astonishing 20-8 at half time.
The Crusaders had the better of territory and possession but also
conceded more turnovers and made more errors as the Force played out of
their skin.
The Crusaders looked to attack from the start but it was the home team
who drew first blood.
In the fifth minute, man-of-the-match Cameron Shepherd picked up loose
ball from a Crusaders knock on to score. He converted his own try for a
7-0 lead.
The Crusaders struck back within the minute, gaining a free kick from a
ruck in front. The ball went wide for No. 8 Mose Tuiali'i to score.
Flyhalf Daniel Carter missed the conversion from the sideline to leave
the score 7-5.
Remarkably, the Force charged back, with inside centre Scott Staniforth
holding up the ball in the tackle long enough to offload inside to
reserve flyhalf Brock James, who scored untouched. Shepherd converted
and the Subiaco Oval crowd went wild as the Force went ahead 14-5
against the competition leaders after 13 minutes.
The Force went further ahead after 23 minutes when the Crusaders were
penalised for coming in from the side of the ruck. Shepherd slotted a
difficult kick to increase the lead to 17-5.
Carter replied with a penalty after 31 minutes when the Force were
judged offside in defence, but he missed another three minutes later
when a dubious call from the touch judge led to Force centre Josh Graham
being penalised for a dangerous tackle.
Shepherd had the last word for the half with a penalty from out wide
when a Crusdaers tackler failed to roll away.
The Force opened the second spell strongly and gained a penalty for
offisde after four minutes but Shepherd pushed the difficult kick a
fraction wide.
On 52 minutes, the Crusaders gained three consecutive penalty lineouts
but the Force repulsed all attacks.
All Black prop Greg Somerville came on and the Canterbury scrum gained
new dominance, but after five minutes of fruitless attack Carter opted
for an easy penalty to close the gap at 20-11.
The Crusaders threatened briefly halfway through the spell but the Force
stole a turnover and took play downfield where Shepherd landed a wobbly
40 metre penalty to increase the lead to 23-11.
The Crusaders stormed back to assault the Force line and prop Gareth
Hardy was yellow carded for a ruck offence. The Crusaders took a tap
penalty and fullback Leon MacDonald scored out wide on an overlap.
Carter missed the conversion and the Force maintained the lead at 23-16.
The Force went straight back on attack but the Crusaders stole the ball
and ran wide where Carter kicked ahead for Rico Gear who won the race to
touch down. Carter converted to tie the game up at 23-23.
But the Force weren't done. A charged-down kick was re-gathered and
winger Haig Sare powered over the line with two Crusaders defenders
clinging to him, but the television match official ruled that his legs
had gone into touch and the try was disallowed.
A second touchdown just before full time was called back for a knock on
and the match that could so easily have been the new franchises' first
win for the season, finished on a draw.

-------------------
And here's an rsru exclusive -- the press conference comments that
sportal haven't included yet:
--------------------
“It was a bloody good contest,” head coach John Mitchell said after the
game.
“What I was pleased about was that we sustained pressure for long
periods of time and we showed good composure under pressure.”
Mitchell was guarded about criticising the disallowing of Sare's try.
“He looked well in on the end view, but I'll have to go and look at it
in more detail,” he said.
Mitchell said that the result illustrated important points about the
Force and its place in the Super 14 tournament, and issued a warning
that may be heeded by the Cats, Cheetahs and Stormers.
“Don't treat us like minnows. Treat us with respect,” Mitchell said.
“People need to understand that we are competitive.
“Not too many people understand just how tough this competition is, the
fine line between winning and losing.”
Mitchell said that the result would be a timely boost ahead of a
difficult tour of South Africa.
“It's pleasing for the whole group,” Mitchell said.
'We can't afford for them to get too excited yet. We've now got to back
up that performance.
“It's also great for the organisation and it's fantastic for the community.”
Mitchell confirmed that flyhalf Scott Daruda is out of the South African
tour but the team will be boosted by the early return of flyhalf Lachlan
McKay and centre Junior Pelesasa from what was to have been
season-ending injuries.
Crusaders coach Robbie Deans praised the Force.
“It was a good performance by the Force,” he said.
“They put us under a lot of pressure and didn't allowed us to get any
flow on.
“They haven't had a lot of luck.”
“It'd be fair to say we were off the pace, but a large amount of credit
deserves to go to the Force.”

I may be wrong, but wasn't the 3 2nd half points from some of the worst
reffing / TJing ever, the Hamilton offside for chasing a deep Carter
kick, when clearly he was (as was the rest of the backline) waaay
onside?

Not since Tapa Henning have I seen a touch judge so DESPERATE to get on
to the field and in front of the TV cameras. It's pathetic.
