K says McRoberts is staying.

The kid had a hard choice to make - Duke education or instant
millionaire. As much as I admire a Duke education - I would have taken
the guaranteed money.

Short term decision. How many of the instant millionaires stay that
way after their playing careers are over? I saw an article about
that somewhere, and the fraction is surprisingly small. Better to
develop a little maturity before being put into a situation where
you need to manage a lot of money, as well as prepare for a career
after basketball. That's the long term decision.

Why did Coach K announce this? Why not McRoberts himself? Just curious.

I disagree - I was an educator for 33 years and I almost always side for
staying in school. But really - how much more mature or wiser in money
handling will McRoberts be next year this time than now. If he goes now
- he will be about $5,000,000 richer next year at this time - and also
one year closer to free agency where he can make $20,000,000 a year or
more.

I slugged it out in the classroom for 33 years (no it did not take me
that long to graduate) - and now I barely have $1,000,000 net worth and
only because my wife makes more than me. 33 years of hard work by two
people for a million. Now this kids could make $5,000,000 by signing his
name. One more year of school at Duke will not make him much wiser -
even if he joins the Lacrosse team.

As a teacher - I am constantly using the "stay in school" mantra - but
if I were McRoberts - I would be gone. And I love Duke basketball.
Wanting him to come back for another year is selfish on Duke fans' part
and K's part.

I love to watch the kid play and I hate the NBA - but ask me if I would
have stuck around the classroom for 33 years if someone would have
offered me a million dollars for signing my name.

Well, it was announced in a PR with a statement by McRoberts. So not a
big deal.

Thanks - I was just wondering why all the news stories were saying that
Coach K announced it. If all he was doing was relaying a statement, then
yeah - not a big deal at all - just an odd choice in reporting the story is
all.

Probably most (all) of the news stories were based on the wire
account, which was written off the news release, which started "Duke
University head coach Mike Krzyzewski announced..." So it wasn't
random, but it wasn't too meaningful either.
