The lousy thing of it is, that coach Roy Williams likely faces no penalty at
all. One of the things I hate about the NCAA is that the punishment usually
hits parties that had little or no invovlement in the crimes while the
guilty folks get off free of penalty.

Looks like "ole Roy ain't that good" AND "ole Roy ain't that clean."
Sounds worse than "getting turned in by a stripper when the check
bounced." :-)
Tell ole Roy - any publicity is good publicity as long as they spell
your name right.

Roy owned up to this long ago. He was shocked that a 'graduating
student' couldn't get a 'gift card from a alumn. Big whipping deal...
good to see Harry still over reacts to everything dealing with 'ole
Roy'.
And Coach K has been where while the University is in crisis?
Hmmmmm.....

A gift card containing anywhere from $25 to $400.

Once again - a coach craps where he eats - then runs to a new program
completely free to do it again.
I agree with the previous poster - Roy should pay this penalty with a
couple of years suspension. Instead - kids still in high school will go
to Kansas because they love the place - and pay for what happened on
Roy's watch.
As far as Coach K goes - he could have left Duke and gotten $30 million
from the Lakers - but he stuck around for the low college wages and to
help these young kids.
Roy Williams went to the highest bidder - when just two years ago he
said he would never leave Kansas - he even told his players that.

The reason for the rule is to keep boosters from being able to lure
recruits by saying "we can't pay you now, but we'll give you a huge 'gift'
as soon as you graduate" and such. Now, I understand why the rule says
*no* gifts, but at the same time it's pretty obvious that giving a few
players gifts that may have been as much as $400 isn't any payback from a
recruiting promise and is laughable if tried to be used on new recruits
("look, we were able to give so-and-so $400 after he graduated and we'll do
the same for you!").
Sure, it's against the rules and something needs to be done about it to
make sure folks know it is and make sure it doesn't happen again. But it's
not like anyone needs to be hung or anything. And I'd say that if this
were any other school, Duke included.
It sounds like the "lack of institutional control" has nothing to do with
any of these rather small issues. It has more to do with Kansas leaving
the compliance director position open (meaning the NCAA thinks that Kansas
left the store unminded) on three separate occasions in a rather short
timeframe. What was lacking in this article was how long those periods
were, and I think that's a significant data point toward how serious this
charge should be. Somehow I'm still doubting the sum total of these
violations and the lack of a compliance director for those times is worthy
of a charge *this* significant, though.

That was never his intention. His intention was to boost his massive ego by
having the sports world focus on him for that entire weekend.

He doesn't need the millions from the NBA when's he prostituting himself for
the millions from Chevy and American Express.

Classic unsubstantiated and erroneous claim. Roy did not go to the highest
bidder. He turned down the Lakers position. In fact, the Lakers offered
the job to him before they went to their second choice -- Coach K.

How many of the problems that were listed were Williams's doing? It
seems to me that they've already served the punishment for the Darnell
Jackson incident, and the other problems attributed to the basketball
program seem like the kind of things that usually result in a slap on
the wrist, "well, we'll let you stay postseason and TV eligible if you
promise not to do it again" sort of penalty, especially if the coach
is leaving.
(Question: "test help for prospective students" - is that code for
"hiring people to take the SATs for football recruits"? I still think
that Prop 42 should be replaced by bringing back freshman
ineligibility but allowing four years of eligibility plus a redshirt
after that - at least as long as the NBA's new age rules hold up in
court.)
(But, of course, since women's basketball is a "non-revenue sport",
the NCAA will probably hit that program with a postseason ban and a
scholarship loss - how DARE they "provide transportation for a
prospective student" - they have to show that there are still some
sports out there where they appear to be concerned for the
students...)

Incorrect; that was not a presupposition, given that it was clear the

Yes, I know you evaded my question with a classic unsubstantiated and
erroneous claim; no need to tell me that.
