''Come on, guys!'' Walker yelled.

''Come on!'' Mourning said.

Riley kept talking strategy, trying to move on, but Wade and Payton kept
cursing each other around him.

It gave the appearance of a team disintegrating. The most important word in
the previous sentence is ''appearance.'' It merely looked bad. It wasn't
actually bad.

But perception can trump reality, and the media loves good video, so the
noise around the noise will escalate in coming days and everyone will forget
that, in this very city, Michael Jordan won a title after punching teammate
Steve Kerr in the face.

Afterward, the first question to Payton was about the clash. A locker over,
Walker, getting dressed, said, ''Next question. Want me to say it for you?''
Payton said, ''Next question.'' Pressed later, Payton said, ``That's
passion. We're OK. That ain't nothing. Me and Dwyane are real tight. Fired
up our team.''

HOW DID IT START?

This began on the court, Payton hissing at Wade after a turnover. He wanted
Wade to pull up and shoot, not pass, and their argument continued on the
defensive end for a full 20 seconds. Then they brought it to the bench
during a timeout. And they took it into the locker room as the half ended,
Shaquille O'Neal putting an arm around Payton and whispering to him the
whole way as Payton said, ''He can't talk to me like that. I'll let it go.
I'll let it go,'' while Wade said to Walker on the walk back, ``I ain't
taking that.''

It didn't stop there. After a halftime to cool, Payton was still yammering
about it on the bench, turning to Derek Anderson as play resumed and saying,
''Pull the mother[bleeper] up and shoot. That's how I mother[bleeping]
talk!'' And Payton was still whispering about it to Walker after the game
even while Wade and Payton refused questions on it.

They need a leader. A veteran player who has seen good times and bad times who
can lead them through this process.

Walker was a captain in Boston, and many Celtics fans thought he was a
*great* leader...this would seem to be a tailor made situation for him.

But I know better... ;)

1) why should he *have* to be the leader in miami? there are two guys
with more years playing major minutes, and a young guy who's supposedly
the most talented player on either side who are his teammates.

2) he was telling both guys involved in the argument to get over it.
this sounds like something resembling leadership.

3) walker was never the most talented player in boston. nobody expected
him to be a leader from that standpoint. but he was the only one who
could get the best out of pierce before this season. there must be
something there for him to achieve that.

then again, if he had shown even more leadership in this situation in
miami, i would expect you to find fault with that somehow too.

He cannot lead from the bench. If he had learned to play
correctly, he could be leading the Celtics today. But now that
he's a parody of himself nobody gives a crap what says.
