"You have to take open shots no matter who is on the court," Dwyane Wade
said after Heat practice at the United Center on Friday. "It's why we have
Shaq to draw a double team. At the same time, you don't want to go too long
without making sure the big man touches the ball. You always want to make
the big man happy. You can see he was unhappy [Thursday]. We all understand
that our focus has to be to pound the ball into him Sunday."

O'Neal termed his play in Game 3 "humiliating," and though he didn't single
out anyone, clearly was frustrated with his teammates for ignoring him.

"I got eight shots," O'Neal said after averaging 15 in the first two games.
"I just have to have a comeback. I didn't really get the ball. It is out of
my control. I've always been the type to have to get the ball [from
someone]. It's frustrating. It's not like the Bulls were playing great
defense."

Crying foul

The Heat was trying not to incur more wrath from NBA referees, though O'Neal
did suggest Bob Delaney from Game 3 targets him.

Riley stressed that O'Neal's foul problems, limiting him to only 15 minutes
on the court through three quarters of the game, changed everything for
Miami. Riley produced Heat statistics that show in more than half of the
team's games this season O'Neal has been in foul trouble with two fouls the
first half and three fouls in the third quarter. O'Neal has been called for
more fouls this season than at any time since his rookie year (1992-93).

"He has to be out there on the floor," Riley said. "Every time he's not, it
takes him out of his rhythm. He has to be more diligent-and we have to be
more diligent-as to the kind of fouls he takes. We have to guard the ball
[on the perimeter] a lot better. We need him on the court, not on the
bench."

Shaquille, apparently still a bit fuzzy on the concept of the "offensive
rebound" and it's potential benefits.

Is there anything that they haven't trotted out there yet? First it was
"oh, the foul trouble, oh, oh". Riley had his stats ready about season
long Shaq trublz in that area. Not sure if they ever gave any credit to
Bulls at all. Now Shaq is onto not getting touches. Well, sure, hard to
get them on the bench. Nothing mentioned about his 0-fer on the line.

Most likely they will try again to pound the ball inside to Shaq, but
with different sets than Thursday. Get Haslem more involved in the low
blocks? If Skiles can coach another neutralization of Shaq given that
Heat will be out to prove a point to Bulls and the league on Sunday,
he's up for a Nobel Baller's Prize.

Big difference between 3-1 and 2-2.

Anytime Shaq's team loses, it is because they didn't throw him the ball
enough. We heard that excuse for years even when Shaq was getting it
every time down.

That was what he bitched about when the Heat were eliminated last season.

It was a lot easier to think it true when Shaq dominated games.

Now one has to wonder: Does Shaq not play well (rebound & defend)
because he is not getting touches... or does he not play well because he
simply cannot any longer?

As the playoffs continue, the schedule will kill Shaq. The Heat will
only have SuperShaq during games that have three or more rest days
before tip off... the other games, they get a guy who will take up a lot
of space on the court and put up around twenty points... but can't
defend nor rebound nor utilize his full array of moves.

Maybe not his "full array", but he'll still have all of his best
moves: (a) scowling from the bench, (b) shoving cheeseburgers, and (c)
whining about not getting touches.

Not any time, but certainly most of the time over the years. Even with
today's rules favoring perimeter players, basketball is still fundamentally
a game played inside-out.

Im no Shaq apologist but this as far as this series goes Shaq
isn't getting many touches because the Bulls are giving guys
like Payton and Walker all the open jumpers they want and
by and large they take them. I don't understand it. You
have a servicable point guard and a pretty good ball handler
at SG yet still they don't pound it down into Shaq. I hope
they never figure it out but if Shaq isn't this team's strength
in this series then they don't have a strength, Wade notwithstanding.

Its possible of course that guys have just lost faith in Shaq's ability to
deliver. He looks tired at both ends of the floor even when he's playing
less than 30 minutes and on plenty of rest. His defense is so poor that
it almost looks spiteful.

Game 7 against Det, he was right. Although the team was pretty beat up
which obviously hurt as well as they were clearly the equal of the two
teams in the Finals.
