A torrent of Torrents [message #881630] Wed, 15 February 2006 15:49
Kullrad
I'm having lots of fun with bittorrents at the moment. They really are
very good.

If I hear a track on ChroniX Metal that I like, for example, I can
quickly type the band into the IsoHunt search plugin in Firefox pick the
torrent I want and it starts downloading in Azureus.

The good thing about a lot of the torrents is that people seem to make
whole catalogues of albums by artitst, so in one go you can get all the
albums without having to fuck about searching for individual albums. Also
they generally list all the tracks in the torrent details window on
IsoHunt.

I have so far aquired, in the last few days, whole collections of;
Strapping Young Lad, Opeth, Pig Destroyer, Devildriver, purely as they
popped up on Chronix Metal and caught my fancy. They've all been at least
192kpbs mp3's as well, which is nice. Some of the more obscure bands are
sometimes not available but they've been few and far between. The only
problem I've got now is that of storage, as in, I haven't got any left
and all this new shit is on my pc at work. I need to build a proper home
music server/storage device.

I also like the fact that this invovles no Microsoft software and I can
happily use all the same programs on my Linux box. It certainly appeals
to the geek in me.

My inner geek also loves how using my new Xda phone I can get Chronix
Metal (or any other internet radio station) through any of my stereos I
have in the house by the magic of Wi-Fi, the PocketMusic player and a
line in cable.

Technology rocks \m/

Right, I need a fucking lie down after typing all that shite.

Ah, so it's like that.

Okay. Tbh, I just wanted to give this thread a bit of a hand, it's dying a
death and it doesn't deserve to. What's your favourite ice-cream flavour
btw?

Kullrad, I don't really know what most of this post means, but I have heard
of BitTorrents because when my clever friend was here over Christmas he told
me BitTorrent was good and installed it on my machine. I've never used it
though, except once when I was trying to find out who CCC were (who made the
'Revolved' bootleg thingy) and found a webpage with a download of something
called 'A Night At The HipHopera', by The Heptones which was sort of
similar. Rap vocals over Queen tracks, less impressive in a way because
most rap vocals are without key so you can play them over anything. Ffs,
how many tunes have had the 'Bring Tha Noize' vocal dubbed over now? All of
them, that's how many.

Anyway, to get this fucker back on track, the download said 'BitTorrent' and
I thought 'ooh, I think I've got that gizmo somewhere' so I clicked it, and
a pop-up box said 'do you want to open this with BitTorrent?' or something,
which threw me a bit but I clicked 'Yes' and then it all went automatic on
my arse and now I have a big mp3 I can listen to.

I've not tried getting anything else with it, though.

> Technology rocks \m/

This is a golden age of file-sharing and music-swapping and portable gizmos
and the suchlike, so it is. I can imagine in thirty years time or something
we'll all be going 'yeah, it was mad for a while, you could have any music
you liked for free. Seriously'.

Well, some of us will. I'll most likely be dead according to my diary.

> Right, I need a fucking lie down after typing all that shite.

You did very well, Kully. Twas a lovely post, and don't let teh cold
indiferens of the world treat to you with the otherwise.

Hmm, that's kind of like saying "perhaps I didn't do enough chest pumps
between breaths" as you back away from the cadaver.

Twas a valiant effort Joe, but I'm afraid without a single post within the
first "golden" hour, this thread's chance of survival was slim at best. In
fact had you been successful in reviving the poor thread, it is likely that
it would have suffered irreparable brain damage due to being starved of
responses for so long. We would have been left with the prospect of the poor
"bit torrent" thread dribbling about the froup in a vegative state being
force-fed QSI's just to keep it alive. None of us wanted to see that, did
we. I think it's for the best all things considered. Don't be too hard on
yourself.

What's ChroniX Metal, btw? Is it a radio station, and if so, what sort of
music does it play? Sounds kinda folkey.

There's some quite good Hardhouse/techno mixes you or Poleson might like,
btw, at the following site: http://www.aromadome.com/inthemix.html

The Alex Towse 'classic hardhouse' mix is quite nice and bouncy, although
the bitrates are rubbish.

This raises some interesting ethical issues, of course. Like, should you
come on a girl's face the first time you have sex with her?

What if it's your own mother?

I tend to use it for obtaining the latest eps of Battlestar Galactica and,
erm, cough, Smallville. I rarely get the maximum bandwidth, but it's
reliable, and if I leave it overnight / during work, stuff's invariably
waiting for me to watch or wank to it.

Right about the whole album jobbie, I found Big Fun's entire back catalogue
and downloaded it! Don't blame it on the BOOGIE!!1eightiesaregrate

Yes, I've been doing exactly the same myself recently. Now, I know you're
sat there thinking 'Joe, you can't do that' but I'm pretty sure I know what
I'm doing.

I've used an old cereal box for the casing, might have been Bran Flakes but
I can't rightly remember and I've painted over it now. I cut a small hole
in it for a USB cable to go in, and put a hairdryer inside to provide power
and keep it warm.

Next, I fitted the hard-drive. Now, that wasn't easy to come by, but
luckily I had one knocking about from my old machine. Took a while to cut
it out of there, there were all sorts of cables and whatnot holding it back
but I eventually got it free and was able to sellotape it to the hairdryer
with the business end pointing towards the USB hole. Then all I had to do
was connect up the bastard to my main computer thing, and transfer alll my
mp3's into their new home.

Amazingly, it worked, and I now have half a terrabyte of external storage
space. Especially impressive given that the original HDD was only 13 gigs.

Do I appeal to the geek in you, Kully? Please say I do.

On a related note, what appeals most to the geek in us all? My geek likes
Youksef, teh new Cubase, getting my pushbike all nice and tuned up once a
year with new brakes and everything, science-fiction movies, logic puzzles,

My inner geek loves that all the sound-making devices in this flat are
connected to each other, directly or indirectly, but miles and miles of
phono leads and speaker wire which you can barely see in most cases.

Not having any leads at all would be much better, though. Leads are the
bane of my life, midi cables, usb cables, cable cables, takes
absofuckinglutely millions of them.

Cunts.

I went through the whole drama of getting a torrent client to work properly just
to get my hands on some Japanese beast porn. After hours of trying to get the
client to work with Zone Alarm, and failing, I eventually installed Sygate
Personal Firewall. I was crushed to discover the JBP was at least 1gb and I'd
have to give 1gb back. I managed to grab about 10 minutes of one JBP flick
before I called it a day and was thoroughly fucked off when the 10 minutes
comprised of a tasty chickadee driving along in a car without a beast in sight.
Hand on my diseased heart I can honestly say I never even saw a horse.

Let's not delude ourselves here, the eighties were pretty rubbish. However,
they were responsible for 'Africa' by Toto and as such should always be
remembered as the greatest single decade in the everything of man.

In a thousand years, the history books will show that there were dinosaurs,
then cavemen, then the Egyptians, then the Greeks, then the Romans, and then
'Africa' by Toto. That's all that will be remembered of what historians
will lump all together as 'the pre-Benomads era'.

DWTWP. Despite your heroic efforts, Joe, this thread is a
disaster zone. There's no way you'll be seeing me contribute
to it. I have my reputation to think about.

I got four, although two of them were the same. Three different Jacks in
total though.

Is that all as it should be?

Heh. Now this I am down with, I don't have teh megastructures programme but
I reckon I'd like it. I fucking love skyscrapers as well, man, some of them
are beautiful.

Did I mention that I've stood at the feet of Saturn V? It's fucking
awesome. Man, the machine that transported it from the hanger to the
launchpad was big enough.

Astronomy was one I forgot to mention, I loved it as a child and had big
posters of teh Solar System etc all over my walls.

Yes and no, provided there are 3 different ones. Two Pooleys and a Kora.
Maybe you could donate the duplicate one to the starving children of
Africa?

Correct. Pooley is a clever chap, I've got some real old shit of his on
vinyl (94/95 era), I might rip some of it for you. It's very nice. I'll
swap it for anything by M.J. Cole.

> Maybe you could donate the duplicate one to the starving children of
> Africa?

Fuck that. Last time I had spare mp3's was when my mate was here over
Christmas, and I ripped myself copies of all the CD's he'd brought down with
him. Except, I lost track a bit and accidentally ripped the Pest album
twice.

So what did I do with the spare mp3's of each tune? I donated them to the
starving, funkless children of Africa. Having received not so much as a
thank-you after two weeks, I contacted the United Nations and eventually got
through to some global aid co-ordinator or something, and he told me 'yes
they got the tunes, they were a bit underwhelmed by it tbh and said next
time send Arctic Monkeys or some food or something'.

The sad thing is, I know of at least one family-oriented Kiwi basshead who
would have loved those mp3's, absolutely loved them. I think you know who
I'm talking about.

They're always going on about how hungry these fuckers are on the news, but
they never say anything about how snobbish and unappreciative they can be.

If nothing else, I've brought the two of you together in a rare and
beautiful web of agreement, and that's an achievement in itself.

Usually, yes. Yes I oughta. But I'm not.

Does that make you better than me? I don't think it does.

No, Mikey, no you didn't. Conclusive proof, if I'm not mistaken, that you
don't actually live on past glories at all, even though you clearly could if
you wanted to. You've more past glories than most cunts have had hot
dinners, but your continual search for new, better glories is impressive.

It's hard to explain, and even harder, I guess, for someone like you to
understand. You haven't got to know Mikey like I have, you've never taken
the time to appreciate him.

You're probably just biased against blurry people or something.

thirty hours now, administering CPR and electric shocks and all the rest for
