Key:
C: Contenders P: Pretenders
H: Home A: Away
W: Win L: Loss
+/-: How they've done vs. the expected results
for contenders, this is equal to CAW - (CHL + PL)
for pretenders, this is equal to (PAW + CW) - PHL
This data is based on the following premises:
1. There are seven strong teams ("the contenders") in the Big Ten this
year, any of which are capable of winning the conference title.
(The remaining four teams are referred to as "the pretenders".)
2. The expected results of games are as follows:
a. When two contenders or two pretenders play, the home team will win.
b. When a contender and a pretender play, the contender will win.
3. Based on 2, we can project the final records/standings.
4. Based on 2, the following factors will determine which of the
contenders wins the title:
a. How many away games against other contenders they play (CA)
b. How many "exceptions" they have vs. the expected results.
There is one possible "positive" exception category:
Winning away games against other contenders (CAW)
There are two possible "negative" exception categories:
Losing home games against other contenders (CHL)
Losing games against pretenders (PL)
The data above shows everything that follows from these premises. The
first several columns show how many games each team plays in each category;
the last several columns shows each team's record in each category.
